News Flashes District Presidents- and Officers-Elect Training Seminar (POETS) Presidents-elect and other club officers who will be in office during the 2015/16 Rotary year will have two POETS sessions to choose from. The first will be held in Cape Town on Saturday 18 April The second will be held in Upington on Thursday 30 April 2015, the day before District Assembly. Presidents-elect are reminded that they are required to attend a POETS session before taking office. For other club officers attendance is voluntary but strongly recommended. Please select the option that best suits your needs and commitments and register as soon as possible. Club officers are reminded that the Grant Management Seminar (GMS) will be held in conjunction with these two POETS. For a club to be qualified to apply for a Global Grant the club must have had a representative attend a GMS. Presidential Citation The closing date for submissions from Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs for this award is 31 March Details of the requirements for the award are set out on pages of the District Handbook or on Submissions must be made to the District Governor and not to Rotary International. District Grant Application Cut-off Date Club officers and Presidents-Elect are reminded that the cut-off date for applications for District Grants is 31 May You are encouraged to prepare your applications for these Grants and ensure that they fit well with the requirements. During this Rotary year we were able to distribute over R to help finance 20 club projects. Global Grant Online Application Tool Improved The Rotary Foundation (TRF) has recently improved the online grant application tool on the Rotary International website. Should any club have an 2
3 outstanding balance of over US$250 for longer than that period of time the club may be terminated by the RI Board. New and Recent Member Workshop - 11 April 2015 New and recently new Rotarians are reminded of the New Member Workshop to be held on Saturday 11 April 2015 which will give them a wider knowledge and understanding of the world of Rotary and help orientate them as they get more involved in their clubs and activities of Rotary. The morning workshop will take place in the Chairman's View at the Western Province Cricket Club Sports Centre on Ave de Mist Rondebosch starting at 08:30. The cost is R50 per person to help cover the cost of the venue and refreshments that will be provided. Rotary Fellowships - The Wine Quaffers & Golfing Fellowship Weekend A combined event for these two Fellowships is planned for the weekend 11/12 April 2015 in the Worcester area. For more details contact Joké Young (Helderberg) at jeyoung@mweb.co.za or David Reade (Worcester) at drreade@netactive.co.za. There is also information available on the Events Calendar on the District website Hurry, space is limited. K.I.D.S take Kids to the Sea Members of Klub Interact Deutsche Schule (KIDS), the Interact Club of the German School (for the rest of us) recently took 485 disadvantaged children including orphans, abuse victims and street children to Fish Hoek beach for a full day's outing. They were transported there by train, the Edutrain, with many carers and supporters to ensure that they all enjoyed the trip. Once at the beach there was a full programme of activities, both intellectual and physical, overseen by KIDS members, Interactors from The Patriots (Simon's Town) and Rustenburg Girls School and Rotarians of Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope and Claremont clubs. Tremendous support was also obtained from the management of Fish Hoek beach, Fish Hoek Lifesaving Club, Pick n Pay and Peninsula Beverages. The result of this huge team effort was to give those 485 children an experience which most of them would never have had had before and a day that they will not forget in a long, long time. 3
4 MULTI-CLUB PROJECT FOR DISTRICT 9350 Donated TV's Distributed Rotarian Oscar Ssuna (Cape Town on right) with PE Stephen Bredenkamp (Wynberg). A total of 43 flat screen 19" TV sets were recently collected from the offices of GAC Shipping (SA) (Pty) Ltd in Montague Gardens by 6 clubs who had applied for them. The TV sets were donated by Petroleum Geo- Services (PGS), the owners of the oil seismic exploration ship MV Ramform Sovereign. The TV's came available when they were replaced as part of the refurbishing of crew accommodation on the vessel. They were offered to Rotary collectively in Cape Town and were landed when the ship called at Cape Town in October GAC Shipping as ship's and clearing agents handled the time consuming task of getting them cleared through Customs. This they did at no cost to Rotary Rotarian Oscar Ssuna (Cape Town) took on the formidable task of coordination and liaison between the clubs who applied for the TV's and those handling them after they were landed. PETROLEUM GEO-SERVICES AND GAC SHIPPING In mid-february all formalities were resolved and the TV's were collected by the club representatives. From there they were distributed to a variety of institutions and facilities including seniors facilities, clinics, hospitals and schools. Congratulations and thanks are due to the ship's owners Petroleum Geo-Services, agents GAC Mayco member Garreth Bloor (Kirstenbosch) Shipping, their representatives and Rtn Oscar Ssuna for making the distribution of these TV's to so many people who will derive great benefit from them. Thanks also to Garreth Bloor (Kirstenbosch), Mayoral Committee member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development for representing the Executive Mayor DG Cecil Rose stands among the Rotarians and GAC Shipping staff at the hand-over of the TVs. 4

WISE WORDS! An Indiana cemetery has a tombstone, more than one hundred years old, with this epitaph: Pause stranger, when you pass me by, As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you will be, So prepare for death and follow me. An unknown passer-by scratched these additional words on the tombstone: To follow you I m not content, Until I know which way you went. 5 DID YOU KNOW? Humanitarian Grants support clubs and districts as they undertake humanitarian serviceprojects, involve the active participation of Rotarians, assist in the development of Rotary networks, and adhere to strict stewardship guidelines.
