1 GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER INTRODUCTION TO ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Economic and community development is one of Rotary s six areas of focus. Unemployment, underemployment, lack of economic opportunity, lack of appropriate training, and the absence of social safety nets lie at the core of poverty. For the poor, labor is often the only asset available to improve well-being. Creating productive employment opportunities is essential for reducing poverty and achieving sustainable economic and social development, and for providing income security and empowerment especially for women, people with disabilities, youth, and the extremely poor. Like education and health strategies, generating income and creating opportunities for a productive workforce and entrepreneurship are essential for reducing poverty. Consider these facts: Every 1% increase in agricultural income per capita reduces the number of people living in extreme poverty by between 0.6% and 1.8%. 1

2 Studies found strong evidence that access to microcredit leads to reduced vulnerability, in the sense of a lower threat of fluctuations in income or consumption. In Nigeria, studies show that a mere 1% investment in human resources such as education and training will lead to a more than 66% decrease in poverty. As shown in countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, and Malaysia, an increase in vocational training is a precondition for countries to make the transition from low to high value-added production. Tremendous progress has been made to reduce global poverty. According to the World Bank, 1.92 million people lived on less than $1.25 a day in 1990 compared to only 1 million in In 2015, several Millennium Development Goal targets were met. While substantial progress was made in many areas, pressing global needs still remain. With the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, an updated development agenda outlines remaining concerns: Almost 202 million people were unemployed in 2013, million of whom were young people, ages Agriculture is the main source of income and employment for the 70% of the world s poor who live in rural areas.8 The gender gap in employment persists, with a 24.8 percentage point difference between men and women in the employment-to-population ratio in Rotary clubs all over the world work with communities to enhance economic and community development. Every community has different needs and different opportunities to serve. CELEBRATING WORLD PEACE DAY The Rotary Club of Princes Town in collaboration with the Mayor of the City of San Fernando His Worship Junia Regrello and The Mediation Board of Trinidad and Tobago

11 CELEBRATING WORLD PEACE DAY The Rotary Club of Princes Town in collaboration with the Mayor of the City of San Fernando His Worship Junia Regrello and The Mediation Board of Trinidad and Tobago hosted A Call For Peace on 21 st September 2017 in celebration of World Peace Day which was attended by Rotarians from various clubs throughout Trinidad and Tobago as well as peacekeepers from many different organisations. A Call For Peace was not just a celebration of World Peace Day, but recognition by the Club of the need for a greater focus on Peace and Peace building within the City of San Fernando and Trinidad and Tobago and marked the beginning of a journey towards the establishment of the City of San Fernando as a Peace City with its collaborators. The Honourable Mr. Justice Vasheist Kokaram, Chairman of the Mediation Board of T&T delivered the feature address on the concept of a Peace City and special guest Rotarian Geoffrey Little of Sydney Australia, the present Dean of the Ambassadorial Chair of the Rotary District 9700 Peace Communities Programme presented to the audience the concept of Rotary Peace Cities/Communities and their establishment through this Rotary recognised programme. 11

13 INVITATION TO ROTARY CLUBS OF DISTRICT 7030 INVITATION TO ROTARY CLUBS OF DISTRICT MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2018 The Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain will be hosting it s 21 st Annual Model United Nations (MUN) on th March 2018 at the Trinidad Hilton in Port of Spain. More than 120 high school students from Trinidad, Tobago, and the Caribbean are expected to participate. True to the spirit of the United Nations, MUN provides a constructive forum for young people to engage in open dialogue on global issues such as gender equality, access to clean water and the rights of refugees. MUN gives youth the tools and experience to appreciate differences, and resolve conflict through negotiation, compromise and listening. They learn research, public speaking and the art of diplomacy, and these skills are taken back to their classrooms, homes and communities, thereby reducing violence, stress and discord in their lives and our region. Clubs across District 7030 are invited to sponsor delegates to attend this exciting and unique youth development opportunity. Students should be aged 16-19, able to speak English, interested in global affairs and ambassadors for their school and country. 14 5 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT ENDING POLIO The road to eradicating polio has been a long and difficult one, with Rotary leading the fight since Going from nearly 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 10 so far this year has required time, money, dedication, and innovation from thousands of people who are working to end the disease. Here are five things you may not know about the fight to end polio: 1. Ice cream factories in Syria are helping by freezing the ice packs that health workers use to keep the polio vaccine cold during immunization campaigns Celebrities have become ambassadors in our fight to end the disease. They include WWE wrestling superstar John Cena, actress Kristen Bell, action-movie star Jackie Chan, golf legend Jack Nicklaus, Grammy Award-winning singers Angelique Kidjo and Ziggy Marley, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu, anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates, and world-renowned violinist and polio survivor Itzhak Perlman. 3. Health workers and Rotary volunteers have climbed mountains, crossed deserts, and sailed to remote islands, risking their lives to vaccinate children against this disease. Rotary has funded more than 1,500 motorbikes and 6,700 other vehicles, as well as 17 boats, to make those journeys. Vaccinators have even traveled on the backs of elephants, donkeys, and camels to immunize children in remote areas. 4. In Pakistan, the polio program emphasizes hiring local female vaccinators and monitors. More than 21,000 vaccinators, 83 percent of whom are women, are achieving the highest immunization coverage rates in the country s history. 5. Thanks to the efforts of Rotary and its partners, more than 16 million people who otherwise might have been paralyzed are walking today. In all, more than 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated since
