2 July 2006 Gamma Chapter s Going for the Gold! Janice Smiley, Professional Develpment Chair Hello from Janice Smiley, your friendly fundraiser! First of all, I would like to say thank you to each of you who have contributed to the National Development Fund/Endowment Campaign. Our national goal is to reach $500,000 by Oregon Gamma Chapter members have given strong support to this effort. We have pledged or given $9,800 to date! On the local level, I d like to make a special plea. Please help our chapter raise some funds for some pretty important items: 1. Gamma Chapter Scholarships! Let s help our chapter members out! More than 30 have been selected in the past 10 years to present seminars or poster presentations at the ESP National Meeting. Your contribution will help strengthen our chapter scholarship fund to support those who wish to continue participating at the national level. 2. Gamma Chapter s pledge to the National Development Fund/Endowment Campaign! Our Chapter pledge is significant and we have faith that you will help us raise $1,000 over the next 3 years to support the endowment. This year, the goal is to contribute $500 towards the campaign. Page 2 Remember, what we give now comes back to our own members in the form of scholarships and grants. Over the years, Gamma Chapter members have received over $10,000 in grants and conference registration support. 3. Supporting Oregon s own National President! Duane Johnson will assume the National ESP President position in Your Gamma Chapter Board would like to support Duane in a couple of ways. First, we would like to hold a President s Reception at the 2008 Galaxy Conference. Second, it is customary for the outgoing President to purchase the National President s Key with the support of his/her chapter. Duane s turn will be at the 2008 Galaxy Conference and your Board is hoping to make it the largest purchase price ever! All proceeds from the purchase go back into the Development Fund as dedicated funds for our chapter, so everyone truly wins. Please say YES and support your local Gamma Chapter fundraising effort. Thank you in advance and hope to see you at our chapter meeting in September! CONTRIBUTE NOW! THANK YOU Gamma Chapter National Fund Campaign Contributors (thru 6/8/06): Roberta Frasier Anderson John Baggott Don Berry Harold M. 4 July 2006 Award for Excellence in Extension Joy Jones, Member Services The Award for Excellence in Extension recognizes a select group of Cooperative Extension System educators who excel at Extension programming, make a positive impact on constituents served, and provide visionary leadership for the System. It is designed to focus national attention on the role of Extension - one that is fundamental to the lifelong education and development of residents in communities around the nation. The Award for Excellence in Extension is presented annually to an individual who has strived throughout his/her career to achieve the benchmarks reflective of excellence in Extension educational programming. These include, but are not limited to, demonstration of high impact of programs; visionary leadership and anticipation of emerging issues for clientele and the system; commitment to diversity; and integration of programs in partnerships with university colleagues and outside clientele. A successful award recipient should be recognized as a leader at his or her university and in the respective field of expertise. Awardees should demonstrate the ability to garner a sustained flow of resources for sustainable Extension programs, use innovative teaching methods and be recognized by peers and the communities served. A maximum of one $5,000 national and five $1,000 regional awards will be made annually. The review panel reserves the right to make less than the maximum number of awards in each of the award categories due to insufficient meritorious nominations. The nominee must be an active Cooperative Extension System Page 4 educator (state, regional and/or county) with a majority university appointment in Extension as of the nominee submission due date, and have responsibility for Extension programming for five concurrent years. Nominations may be submitted by a nominee, supervisor, or peer. However, nominations must include endorsement by the nominee s supervisor(s), conveyed via signatures requested on the Information Cover Page, described below. National award recipients are not eligible for renomination. Regional award recipients may only be renominated to receive a national award. Such renomination may occur no sooner than three years following receipt of the regional award. Current members of the ECOP are not eligible. Nominations will be evaluated for outstanding accomplishments in achieving and sustaining excellence in Extension. The following should be incorporated into the justification of the nomination: Determine institutional and Extension educator/nominee eligibility from above. The nominee or another individual may prepare the nominations package. A complete nomination package consists of the Nomination Cover Page, Information Page, the Personal Data Page and the other pages describing the basis for nomination, not to exceed six numbered pages. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Any material submitted in excess of the six page limit (CDs, videos, publications, etc.) will be discarded prior to review. Include one (1) copy of the nominee s Curriculum Vitae with your submission (in addition to the six page nomination package). Nomination Package Guidelines Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Use Times New Roman 12 point (or equivalent). The due date is August 1 each year. In 2006, send to Linda Kay Benning at lbenning@nasulgc.org with Excellence Award Nomination in the subject line. Nominations Cover Page is one page that provides the name, title, address, phone number and address of nominee; nomination submitted by (name, title, address, phone number and address); and specific wording for award citation (30 words or less): Information Page is one page containing the nominee s background information and approval for submission by the nominee s Dean and State Program Leader. For institutions with a different administrative structure, this form should be signed by two appropriate individuals having administrative oversight of the nominee. Personal Data Page is one page containing the nominee s education and experience as well as a brief summary of recent Extension assignments. Other information to be used against the evaluation criteria can be included not exceeding the six page limit and electronic submission requirements.

If you can help staff the OSUEA membership table at the conference, then you can also promote ESP membership! Please let me know if you are interested! Also, I am always looking for ESP members who would like to be on the Member Recruitment & Retention Committee. I would love your ideas about ESP and what it can do to support its members and how we can get more Extension professionals to join. We will have a Gamma Chapter insert for the national ESP brochure that we can hand out at Annual Conference and to prospective members. Please contact me if you d like to get involved in membership activities! tammy.skubinna@oregonstate.edu ESP Website Change The ESP website has been switched to a new platform and now requires the insertion of the www. If you are currently an ESP member and interested in running for office, or would like more information about these opportunities, please let me know, , Jim.Reeb@oregonstate.edu Oregon Gamma Chat JCEP Planning for 2008 & 2009 Regional Leadership Meetings Duane Johnson, National ESP 2nd Vice President. At the recent JCEP (Joint Council of Extension Professionals) meeting, a majority of the board passed a motion to have only two locations for the JCEP Regional Leadership Workshops; the Northeast will combine with the South and the West will combine with North Central. The reasons given for this move include the small numbers of persons in the West and Northeast Regions attending the leadership conference. Now JCEP will need to decide the location of those meetings. Stay tuned for more information. Join OSU Extension ESP Gamma Chapter Take advantage of the many opportunities of ESP membership. Any Extension faculty or staff with at least three years in Oregon Extension are welcome to join. Cost is $45 renewing members, $55 new members, $200 retired life members.
