4 A Village with My Name: A Family History of China s Opening to the World Scott Tong, Correspondent, Marketplace Sustainability Desk Thursday, April 5, :00 pm 120 Clemens Hall, UB North Campus Scott Tong s first book, A Village with My Name: A Family History of China s Opening to the World, offers a long view of China s opening to the West told through the lives of people across five generations in his own family. Tong, former Shanghai bureau chief for Marketplace, offers a unique perspective on the transitions in China through the eyes of his family members. By uncovering his family s history, Tong discovered a new way to understand the defining moments of modern China and its long, interrupted quest to go global. 4

5 The keynote speaker is Dr. Stacey J. Lee, a professor in Educational Policy Studies and a faculty affiliate in Asian American Studies at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Her research focuses on the role of education in the incorporation of immigrants into the US. She is the author of Unraveling the Model Minority Stereotype: Listening to Asian American Youth and Up Against Whiteness: Race, school and immigrant youth. 6 Education March 10, 9 am to 4 pm, on the Tompkins Cortland Community College campus in Dryden, NY. The keynote speaker is Carina Caldwell from Community Colleges for International Development. Others presenters include folks from Asia Society, SUNY COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), and many local educators that SAC, SEAP and SAP have supported in their curriculum internationalization projects. Call for Papers for the 47th Annual Conference on South Asia - to be held October 11-14, 2018 at the Madison Concourse Hotel & Governor's Club - invites proposals for Symposia (formerly known as PreConference), Panels, Round Tables, Single Papers, and Film Screenings. This year, the Conference has no specific theme and we encourage proposals relating to all countries of South Asia in a wide variety of disciplines. The online submission portal will open on our website for all submissions on February 1st. Deadline for Symposia (formerly known as PreConference) is March 1, Deadline for Panels, Round Tables, and Single Papers is April 2, Conference on South Asia website Announcing the 14th Lodz East Asia Meeting Asia in World Politics: Past, Present, and Future, organized by the Department of Asian Studies, University of Lodz to be held at the Faculty of International and Political Studies of the University of Lodz on June 7-8, The 2018 conference will focus on the examination of the evolution of Asia s position in the contemporary world. The selected papers will be published in the book series run by the Department of Asian Studies: Contemporary Asian Studies Series. Conference fee 80 EURO. This year s conference is hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology and the theme is innovation and invention. The conference will be held September Scholars, both affiliated with an institution as well as independent scholars, are invited to submit proposals for a panel or an individual paper. 7 The South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) based at the University of Wisconsin Madison is accepting applications for summer 2018 intensive courses in the following South Asian languages: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Pashto, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, and Urdu AND funding is available! The SECOND ROUND FLAS Fellowships deadline is April 8, 2018 and the SASLI Half and Full Fee Remission deadline is March 12, Indicate your interest in the $1000 Fee Remission when submitting the SASLI online application. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, including in South Asia. UB Asian Studies Study Abroad Award for Summer The UB Asian Studies Program is happy to announce that the application period for the Summer 2018 study abroad award opens on Feb. 1 with a deadline of March 16. The awards range between $500 and $1000 dollars and UB undergraduates attending a credit-bearing study abroad program in Asia are eligible. The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are given to doctoral candidates at universities in the U.S. to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (four months or less) fellowships are available for scholars who hold the Ph.D. degree. Scholarly/Professional development fellowships are available to scholars and professionals who have not previously worked in India. Creative and Performing Arts fellowships are available to practitioners of the arts of India. Eligible applicants include 1) U.S. citizens; and 2) citizens of other countries who are students or faculty members at U.S. colleges and universities (this rule does not apply to U.S. citizens).
