5 2. SOCRATES ERASMUS (I) Erasmus: is the Action of Socrates for higher education Budget (2004): more than 187,5 million euros Activities: 1. Student and teaching exchange 2. Joint development of study programmes (Curriculum Development) 3. International intensive programmes (IP) 4. Thematic Networks 5. Language courses 6. European credit transfer system (ECTS)
6 2. SOCRATES ERASMUS (II) 2.1. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT (I) AIM joint development implementation dissemination of curricula CONSORTIUM universities from at least three different participating countries 1 coordinating institution geographical spread of partners is reccommended
7 2. SOCRATES ERASMUS (III) 2.1. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT (II) TYPES OF ACTIVITIES 1. Study programmes at intermediate or advanced level (PROG) 2. European modules including specialised languages modules (MOD) FUNDING Period of up to 3 years, including the dissemination and implementation activities Maximum 75% of the eligible project budget May be spent on: staff costs, direct costs (travel and subsistence), equipment, overheads

SOCRATES ERASMUS (IV) Projects for the joint development of study programmes FEATURES Modify or adapt existing programmes of study or establish new Jointly programmes Intermediate or advanced level Must cover all the phases of the university curriculum Duration of 2 3 years MASTER-TYPE Support the establishment of new highly selective degree courses Must respond to European shortages of highly qualified human resources One to two years of course work, including a core to be shared by all the partner institutions involved. Commitment to the recognition of the resulting qualifications

SOCRATES ERASMUS (V) Projects for the joint development of European Modules AIM To promote the European dimension in the curriculum across a wide range of disciplines Provide students with a European perspective on their specialist subject areas FEATURES Possible fields: history, society, culture, politics, economics of EU, Community Law, language modules, etc. Should constitute innovation for the universities Should have an impact on the students Modules must be integrated in the degree programmes Duration of 1-2 years
10 2. SOCRATES ERASMUS (VI) AIM 2.2. THEMATIC NETWORKS, TN (I) Created to deal with forward-looking and strategic reflection on the scientific, educational and institutional issues in the main fields of higher education FEATURES Cooperation between departments of higher education institutions and other partners such as academic organisations or professional bodies All countries participating in the Socrates Erasmus programme, should be represented in a TN (the average number of partners is 100) A TN is expected to lead to outcomes which will have a lasting and widespread impact

THEMATIC NETWORKS, TN (II) FIELDS COVERED TN cover three types of fields: Traditional disciplines (medicine, law or business studies) Multidisciplinary fields (environmental studies or humanitarian aid) Horizontal themes: (continuing education and teacher education) IMBALANCE in favour of scientific disciplines, compared with the humanities SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS TO PROJECTS WHICH: promote closer co-operation between existing nationally-based associations in different countries; co-operation with academic associations, learned societies, professional bodies, other partners of socio-economic importance

THEMATIC NETWORKS, TN (III) APPLICATION PROCEDURE A two-stage procedure: Pre-proposal by November 1st Full proposal by March 1st (only for pre-selected projects) FUNDING AND ELEGIBLE COST Projects are funded for 3 years and the level of support will depend on the size and scope of the project TN can apply for an additional year of dissemination of the results; Staff cost, travel & subsistence cost, equipment and documentation, overheads
13 2. SOCRATES ERASMUS (IX) 2.2. THEMATIC NETWORKS, TN (IV) TYPES OF ACTIVITIES List of activities (indicative list): 1. Maping and enhancing education 2. Quality assurance 3. Facilitating European cooperation 4. Defining and updating competences 5. Promoting synergies between teaching and research 6. Reinforcing the link between education and society

ERASMUS MUNDUS (I) COOPERATION AND MOBILITY PROGRAMME IN THE FIELD OF HIGHER EDUCATION AIM enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries FEATURES The duration of the programme is five years ( ) with a planned financial envelope of 230 million Euro for the whole period The programme comprises four concrete actions

ERASMUS MUNDUS (II) ACTION 1 ERASMUS MUNDUS MASTER COURSES high-quality integrated courses at masters level offered by a consortium of at least three universities in at least three different European countries they must foresee a study period in at least two of the three universities it must lead to the award of a recognised double, multiple or joint diploma Duration of the course between 60 and 120 ECTS credits Funding: max. of euros per year and consortium EM Masters will be selected for 5 years

ERASMUS MUNDUS (III) ACTION 2 ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIPS To give strong external projection to the EM Masters Scholarships for third-country graduate students and scholars Students: 1600 /month x 10 months for travel expenses (per academic year) Scholars: 4600 /month x 3 months for travel expenses

ERASMUS MUNDUS (IV) ACTION 3 PARTNERSHIPS EM Masters Courses selected under Action 1 also have the possibility of establishing partnerships with third-country higher education institutions to encourage European universities to open themselves up to the world to reinforce their world-wide presence These partnerships allow for outgoing mobility of graduate EU students and scholars involved in the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses

ERASMUS MUNDUS (V) ACTION 4 ENHANCING ATTRACTIVENESS projects aimed at enhancing the attractiveness of and the interest in European higher education It supports activities that improve the profile, the visibility and the accessibility of European higher education as well as issues crucial to the internationalisation of higher education, such as the mutual recognition of qualifications with third countries

ERASMUS MUNDUS (VI) FIGURES ERASMUS MUNDUS WILL SUPPORT: 100 EM Master Courses Grants for undergraduate students from third countries to follow the courses Grants for more than EU students involved to study in third countries Teaching or research scholarships in Europe for more than incoming third-country scholars Scholarships for more than outgoing EU scholars About 100 partnerships

SUMMARY (I) AIM CD TH EM Joint development, implementation and dissemination of curricula CONSORTIUM CD TH EM institutions from at least 3 different participating countries (Europe) Work on different activities in order to enhance quality and to define the European dimension within a given discipline or study area 1 representative from each participating country ( average: 100) Integrated Master Courses leading to a joint or multiple degree 3 institutions in at least 3 different countries
