4 Tiffany Martin Dave Rapke Jeff Simons Program Today s program was presented by Senator Joseph Griffo, (Republican) a Rome native, and our NY State Senator representing the 47 th District which covers Lewis County, most of Oneida Co. and St., Lawrence County. Joe has a BA degree in Political Science from SUNY Brockport and in his senior year, he served an internship with State Assemblyman James Hurley. After college he was appointed Director of Community Relations for the city of Rome and was administrative Assistant to Carl Eilenburg. He won a seat in the Oneida County legislature in Joe was elected Mayor of Rome which he held from He was then appointed Oneida County Executive which he held from and became a NY Senator in There are 350,000 people in the area Joe represents. Joe explained that there are three components to his job. They are: Constituent Service This component consists of helping people as individuals. Joe feels that this is the most important part of his job as Senator and also the most rewarding. Advocacy to deliver to the community collaborating with others which creates good professional relationships. Senators and others need to work together within the region Legislate as lawmakers, passing bills. In order to create relevant bills, senators participate in committees of interest. Joe feels that he should choose committees of relevance to the area he represents. He participates in: Military Affairs Committee Racing and wagering Committee Education Committee Energy Committee

5 Banking Committee which he is the chair of. Finance Committee Parks & Tourism Committee Labor/Sports Committee Senator Griffo is working toward: Term limits for Senators. Currently, the rule is 8 years but it is not a law. He also would like to see redistricting based on geography which would help to balance economics equally in the area he represents. Tax relief and cost of living - especially in Rome but states that this would require a major change to bring the cost of living down. (Change being redistricting by geography) The new Nano technology and cyber security for our area as a way to bring new people into the community. Nano technology being the staple at SUNY Public Service Commission Joe mentioned a Town Hall Meeting being held at the North Utica Senior Center on the 17 th to enable citizens to express concerns and ask question about Cable and the area code change which is coming soon as well as what the Public Service Commission is and does. Title of the book is, A century of service by David C. Forward. This will be ongoing. Serving the World Community Early Rotary activities focused on club and community service. Then, in 1914, eight Rotary clubs in Britain and Ireland helped house refugees who had fled from the impending war in their native Belgium. When a hurricane and tidal wave struck Texas in 1919, Rotary clubs in other countries responded with donations to Rotary International Relief Fund. Later, some clubs arranged exchange visits as an expansion of fellowship exchange. In 1927, two Rotarians each from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden formed the first Rotary intercountry committee to promote fellowship on an international scale. This idea spread beyond Rotary around the world. The two elements that drew Rotarians into international service were warm fellowship and compassion for the needy. Over the years, some have questioned Rotary s emphasis on international service, especially between citizens of hostile nations. Rotary has answered that the goal of all Rotarians is to advance world peace and understanding between all people. There are many times during border wars or skirmishes when Rotarians of both sides of the conflict have worked for resolution of the dispute.

6 As the 20 th century progressed, Rotarians were foremost of those suggesting that environmental, business, and public health actions should have a global outlook. In 1961, Rotary Institute for present and past RI Officers recommended to the incumbent RI board a world community service program. More than 50 planters along major thoroughfares have flowers in the summer and fir greens and berry limbs in the winter. This project started in 1990 after a local lumber company donated wood to build garbage receptacles. In Brief News, studies, and recent research Walking may boost creativity according to a series of experiments out of Stanford University. Researchers administered several common tests of creativity such as asking participants to devise new uses for everyday objects and draw associations among unrelated words as subjects sat or walked either outdoors or on a treadmill. The simple act of walking was associated with increased scores for 81% of the participants and a residual creative boost when they were seated again. Highest quality responses came then subjects strolled outdoors. We can be heroes, if just for one day by Frank Bures Elizabeth Svoboda, author of What makes a hero? The surprising Science of selflessness, says that heroes are everywhere these days The definition

9 has expanded from mythical figures to include soldiers, firefighters and social heroes like the professional football player who speaks out about head injuries, and children who stand up to bullies. Our culture assumes that anyone can be a hero and that we all should act heroically or at least pro-socially to help those in need. Svoboda examines new research into why we help others and whether humans have evolved an instinct for what is called group selection which means that we help others because group survival is better for all of us. Svoboda reports on neuroscience research that has found that donating to a worthy cause activates the same brain regions as craving for food and sex. She also explores how volunteering can boost health and life satisfaction. The book closes with a look at cultivating an altruistic mindset. Altruistic people tend to see themselves as capable of getting things done and consider themselves a part of a larger human family. They also see life through a redemptive lens focusing on the good that can come out of the bad. Rotarian September 2014 Up Front: Natural Networker by Sallyann Price Latricia Wright of Detroit read about Launch Detroit a District 6400 project to provide microloans, business education, and mentorship to local entrepreneurs and decided to apply. Latricia is a body analyst and nutrition counselor. (Works to promote healthy living and conducts nutrition and fitness education programs in schools) She had attended a Rotary meeting earlier as a guest and felt at home with the group. She completed the Launch Detroit business courses and used her loan to purchase inventory for her wellness practice. She meets with her Rotarian mentor regularly and at the end of last year joined the Detroit Rotary Club. Since then she has served on two committees, designed fliers, secured speakers and helped form a new Interact club at a public high school on the city s west side.
