4 Foreword Welcome to the fourth issue of our e-journal, which is published by the EuroMed Youth Centre for the benefit of all young people. Since 2012 we have been continuing to empower young people in our local area, and to cooperate with other youth centres in Europe and the Mediterranean Region. We are now proud to publish the fourth issue of our e-journal, and move closer to our goal with determination and confidence. With the publication of this e-journal, our aim is to share with our readers the wide variety of different European experiences enjoyed by young people during their mobility periods, and to provide information about the opportunities available to young people in Europe. I would like to thank to all the staff members in our centre for the great contribution they made to the publication of our e-journal. I hope it will be useful for all young people, and help them to learn more about EU opportunities and their own personal development. Prof. Dr. İlhan GÜNBAYI Exective Director of EuroMed Youth Centre

5 Issue Slogan Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela Education is one of the needs that became a necessity of the modern era just like eating, drinking and sheltering. Education became a flow of information through time and made human life easier and practical. Like Nelson Mandela said, the best and easiest way to make Earth a better place with positivity and peace is through education. In this issue, we are, quoting Nelson Mandela because our journal gives great importance to the education and globalization of the world. With our projects, we aim to provide cultural exchange and new experiences for young people while improving their social skills and language. Thus, we aim to help them take firm steps forward against life.

6 From Educational Advisor As lots of philosophers said before, in order to change the world, an individual should start from oneself. Nelson Mandela stated that the key for this change is education. With our journal, we want to emphasize the importance of participating in domestic or abroad exchange programmes for young people s career in order to get education in different places and improve. For young people who are just beginning their career, getting education in different places can be an important value for their vocational and personal skills. Especially being able to cooperate in multicultural environment in abroad countries could make them get in front of their peers. That is why we put great importance about informing and encouraging young people about youth projects and exchange programmes. In this issue, we tried to help young people improve by informing them about EU projects of our Centre. We hope it will be useful for all young people. Rabia VEZNE Educational Advisor to the EuroMed Youth Centre

9 Exchange Programmes Corner What is the Erasmus+ Programme? Erasmus is a European Union student exchange programme created by the European Community Action Scheme in Erasmus+, or Erasmus Plus, is the new programme combining all of the European Union s current programmes dealing with education, training, youth and sport, and which is due to begin in January The Erasmus programme, as a European Union education and training programme, is designed to increase the quality of higher education in Europe. For this purpose, the Programme promotes co-operation between higher education institutions in Europe. The resulting partnerships and mobility activities are financially supported by the Programme. In addition to co-operation between HEIs, the Erasmus Programme also promotes cooperation between HEIs and the labour market so that universities are in a position to meet the needs of the labour market, and give better employment opportunities to graduates.

10 The European Commission is responsible for the overall implementation of the Erasmus Programme. Actions are managed by the national agencies of the 33 participating countries, or by the Executive Agency for Education, Audio-visual and Culture based in Brussels. For many students, the Erasmus+ Programme is their first experience of living and studying in another country. Hence, it has become a cultural phenomenon which is very popular among European students. The Programme fosters not only learning and understanding of the host country, but also a sense of community among students from different countries. The Erasmus experience is considered both a time for learning and as a chance to socialise. It is seen as a great opportunity to study abroad while not having the expense of studying outside the European Union, since the grants available to Erasmus students are not available to those opting to leave the continent to study.

11 Exchange Programmes Corner An Erasmus Outgoing Student sent by Akdeniz University What a Fulfilling Semester Hello, my name is Kaan Eray. I am a second-year student at English Language Teaching at Akdeniz University. To gain a new experience at the second year of my Bachelor s Degree study I applied to Erasmus+ Programme. And I earned one term abroad study at Austria, Linz, which I chose from first pick. One of my biggest dreams since my high school years was getting education in Europe, inspecting their education system. And I have made a step towards achieving this dream. I gained a consciousness that everything would be new, exciting and would add some values to me. While searching about course registrations, visa procedures, plane ticket and accommodation, I found myself in a new city, even a new life style. As well as seeing their life style being different, getting an opportunity to see their education system being different than ours was a high value opportunity. Apart from Austria, Not only I got an opportunity to meet and share cultures with people like me coming to Erasmus+ Program from countries

12 like Scotland, Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal and Latvia but also I got an opportunity to improve my English. As a result, this is a programme I recommend to anyone who is attending an university. You too should explore this intercultural living space. Kaan Eray KAVAL January, 2016

13 Exchange Programmes Corner What is the Mevlana Programme? Mevlana is an exchange programme designed to facilitate the exchange of students and academic staff members between Turkish higher education institutions and higher education institutions in other countries. Since the regulations were published on August 23rd 2011, (Regulation No ), the exchange of students and academic staff members between Turkish higher education institutions and higher education institutions in other countries has been made possible. Students may study abroad for a minimum of one, up to a maximum of two semesters, while members of the academic staff may lecture abroad from a minimum of one week, up to a maximum period of three months. As a result, students and academic staff members from any country may benefit from this programme by being hosted by Turkish higher education institutions in order to study or lecture.

14 The original name of Mevlana, which inspired the name of the programme, belonged to Muhammed Celaleddin. Mevlana was born in 1207 in the district of Belh of Horasan, which is now on the border of Afghanistan. The name "Mevlana" was used by Sultan Veled, Şems-i Tebrizi, and it has become a universal symbol which is identified with him. He is also known as Rumi to the people of the western world. Mevlana lived in the 13th century, but as a sufi who encompasses a timeless quality in his work, he did not discriminate between peoples, as illustrated by his verse "Come, come whoever you are". As well as his mercy, selflessness and unbounded humanity, he showed total tolerance, qualities which impressed not only the world of Islam but also the whole of humanity. He is accepted worldwide as a profound intellectual in his view of people and life. UNESCO, in recognition of the 800th anniversary of Mevlana s birth, declared the year 2007 as the year of Mevlana and Tolerance. Throughout his education, he visited the educational institutions of various cities in different countries not only as a student, but also as a scholar. Mevlana attributed great importance to "change" in his philosophy throughout his life.

15 Exchange Programmes Corner A Mevlana Incoming Student at Akdeniz University Akdeniz University welcomes Incoming Mevlana Academic Staff Joyce Sabreena Niles from Kelaniya University in Sri Lanka. She visited the Akdeniz University School of Foreign Languages between August 21st and 31st She stated that the Mevlana Exchange Programme was a very good opportunity to increase knowledge and cooperation between universities from every part of the world, and that the International Relations Office of Akdeniz University was doing excellent work in increasing the number of collaborative ventures of this kind.

16 Exchange Programmes Corner Hello, A Mevlana Outgoing Student sent by Akdeniz University Firstly, I want to send my thanks to Akdeniz University International Relations Office. Mevlana Programme gave me an opportunity to study English Language Teaching for one academic term at Chiba, Japan. As known, our country Turkey is in Middle East, while Japan is in Far East. We got to Tokyo after a 16-hour plane flight (with waiting 2 hours at Dubai Airport for transit). We arrived in Chiba after a 50 minutes train ride from Tokyo Narita airport. An academic staff greeted us at airport and took us to the Chiba University International Students House. The rooms were for one student. Each room was 13 square-meter which had a mini kitchen, toilet, shower, bed and a desk. This dormitory was only a minutes bike ride, and a 5 minute train ride away. Train and bicycle are their essential transportation vehicle. Trains are so punctual that everyone rushes into the train with fear of doors closing because of their punctuality. After work and school exhausted people sleep in trains, and no one speaks in trains because of this. After registering for classes first week, we went to a welcome party for international students. We met students coming from America, Europe, East and Asia. We ate Japanese food and watched their traditional dances.

17 Each lesson lasted an hour and a half. And there were minutes breaks. In these breaks, we were eating Japanese snacks such as Onigiri. Because lunch break was 50 minutes we were going to cafes around the school. In first week I said Let s go eat Sushi. When I ate it, first it tasted different, it even gave me a stomach pain but you get used to it eventually. After a while it tasted like tuna fish. Their other well-known foods are Okonomiyaki and Tenpura which consists meat, fish and rice, Ramen which looks like a long noodle, Soba, Udon and Yakisoba. And as a drink, of course green tea and Miso soup. They love green tea so much that they not only drink it cold and hot, but also use it in ice creams, chocolates and desserts.

18 At first communication was hard because outside of University, almost no one speaks English. We were lucky that we were in an international students group. But of course, we had to learn some Japanese to use in everyday life. If you try to learn everything it is very hard because there are 3 alphabets and letters. Even a Japanese person becomes proficient enough in Japanese to read a newspaper after graduating from university. About Japan culture, I can say that they are very respectful and earnest. And I believe they are hundred years ahead of us in technology and life standards because of their hard work. They work so hard that seeing fully crowded trains at 6 in the morning is normal. They wear Yakuta for their special days. They have incredible karaoke and Izakaya culture. In diners called Izakaya, people eat with alcohol drinks and talk. They preserve their culture so well that you can t see anyone holding hands in street. They protect nature, and everyone has to divide their trash into three; plastic, metal and paper. Talking about nature, Japan is so green that (especially Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Nikko) it looks like our black sea region. Japans currency Yen, is three times more valuable than Turkish Liras. And of course earthquake Every week several small and big earthquakes happen. They built all the buildings with the Earthquake doesn t kill, wrong constructed building does. methodology. When I felt the first

19 earthquake I got incredibly scared but my phone didn t even move an inch on the desk. And the weird thing for me was, after a big earthquake everyone lives their ordinary lifes. They got used to it. If an earthquake that big happened in our country, everyone would be on the streets, panicking. I collected amazing memories the 5 months I lived in Japan. For the ones who will go to Japan, I recommend studying Japanese and having a nice economical support beforehand. Kübra Ünver Faculty of Education/ English Language Teaching

20 Exchange Programmes Corner What is the Farabi Programme? Farabi is a national exchange programme operating between universities which have signed the Farabi Exchange Protocol. The programme was started in Turkey by the YÖK Higher Education Institution in Each October and March students can apply to their own universities to be a Farabi Exchange Student and to study in another university in Turkey. The selection process takes into consideration the academic success of the applicants. The exchange serves to improve both the social skills of the individual, and provides them with experience in how to deal with difficulties. Since they are studying in a different social environment, it also improves their communication skills. The students have the chance to study with different teachers at a different university, which helps them to develop a different vision in their work.

21 Exchange Programmes Corner A Farabi Incoming Student Farabi was a turning point in my life for me. I was 3rd year student when I heard about this programme. I was planning on coming to Akdeniz University for my 4th year. All my friends and professors told me I was insane. They told me this was not a risk, it was a complete suicide. They told me You will not be able to finish your university, you will not get used to there, you will be like a stranger there.. But I didn t listen to them. With the courage of being from Antalya, I made my application. I was always thinking positively. I thought Even if it doesn t go well I will study at my home town. For me, my friends are very important. During my education at Selçuk University I had a very close friend, who is also my house-mate. We came to Akdeniz University together with the help of this programme. Even though we suffered a little I always thought You can t reach the top without starting from ground.. Akdeniz University was supporting me much more than my own university. Farabi programme requires a lot of caution and responsibility. For my friends who wants to attend Farabi Programme, I recommend knowing their rights.

22 At the start of this writing, I mentioned that this programme was a turning point for me. Because I gained such friendships that are so important to me. Without doubt, Farabi Programme is the best programme to teach people courage, patience, responsibility and being cautious. And I want to thank Akdeniz University and Selçuk University Farabi Coordinators. Bahadır Göçen Faculty of Tourism Selçuk University

26 EU Projects Corner A Youth Exchange Experience in Spain I attended a project called Volunteering in Education in a town called Alomartes in Spain, Malaga between 23-30/08/2015 with people from 7 different countries. It was a new experience for me. There were 10 days ahead of me which I will spend people from different cultures so I was very excited and curious. First two days were a little bit hard because there were almost 30 people I didn t know in a house together But after 3rd and 4th day, we got used to each other. There were trainings and events in the project which were very tense and hard, but we were slowly being friends and having fun. And really, during 10 days. I couldn t even understand how sincere, how intimate we got with each other. You understand that in the last day when you re leaving. Everyone is saying their goodbyes sadly. Even though coming into this project I was uneasy, I made lots of friends. We have experienced different things together, we learned each other s language.

27 This project helped me improve my English, helped me socialize. We also learned how to make a group project, how to meet in a common point etc. so we achieved our projects objective. We still keep in touch with each other and I can say that I have friends from all 7 countries if I decide to go to those countries. Tuba AKSAKAL
