Upon founding the university, its benefactor, Johns Hopkins, made clear his intent that young people of character and intellectual promise deserved an education of the highest caliber, regardless of their financial means. In 1912, when the Maryland State Legislature appropriated funds to establish a school or department of applied science and advanced technology, this commitment remained a guiding precept at the Engineering School s founding as the only stipulation was the provision to set aside sufficient funds to establish 129 scholarships. The Department of Applied Science & Technology is established. The first Johns Hopkins Engineering students matriculate, attending classes in the newly-built Maryland Hall. The School of Engineering is founded Conferral of the first Master of Engineering degree. For the past century, the university has remained dedicated to providing the most driven and qualified students with unparalleled educational opportunities and Johns Hopkins Engineering has strived to provide the most talented young minds with access to the education and opportunities that will enable discoveries, give voice to their insights, and allow them to make their mark on the world. Today, scholarship support remains a critical need at Johns Hopkins Engineering. By participating in the Engineering Centennial Scholarship Program, you will help us build upon the accomplishments of the past 100 years and fuel the next generation of innovations and discoveries. The nation s largest part-time engineering graduate program, built over two decades at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, becomes part of the Whiting School The Society of Engineering Alumni (SEA) is formed at Johns Hopkins, welcoming Engineering graduates from all decades.
