1 2018 Scholarship Guidelines
2 OVERVIEW At Immanuel Lutheran College we are proud to offer a wide range of scholarships designed to support talented students who have the potential to benefit from the College s outstanding academic and cocurricular programs. We are committed to nurturing our students by awarding scholarships across a broad range of abilities. Successful candidates are awarded a scholarship based on the following criteria: Academic performance (ACER Scholarship Test and previous academic results) Achievement and involvement in areas of Sport, Music and the Arts. Leadership Community service Scholarships awarded to successful students will provide a remission on tuition fees (excludes levies and other costs e.g. uniforms) ranging from 30% to 50%. TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1. Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Principal and are subject to a quota which is determined by College Council. 2. Scholarships are not available to overseas full fee paying students. 3. Candidates, if shortlisted, may be invited to have an interview with the Principal and all offers will be made in writing. Any scholarship offer not accepted by the due date will lapse. 4. Scholarships are awarded on the proviso that the student continues to meet the specific conditions set out in their written offer, participates to the best of their ability in College activities and adheres to the College s Code of Conduct. 5. Scholarship students results/commitment to College events (specific to their scholarship offer) will be monitored each semester to ensure recipients are meeting their obligations. 6. Scholarships are offered for the duration of the recipient s enrolment at Immanuel Lutheran College. Recipients awarded a scholarship from Years 6, 7 and 8 will be required to attend a review interview with the Principal/or elected delegate prior to entering Year Should a scholarship recipient fail to meet their scholarship obligations, counselling, followed by a letter of warning shall be issued for corrective action to be taken by the student. The student shall then have the following semester to meet their initial scholarship requirements. In the event of the student returning a second unsatisfactory semester review, the scholarship may be reduced or cancelled as determined by the Principal. 8. Successful candidates who are not current Immanuel students will not be required to pay an application fee or the confirmation of enrolment fee as part of their scholarship package. 9. The scholarship does not cover costs such the resources levy, uniform, books or music tuition fees. 10. All candidates, both successful and unsuccessful, will receive written notification in due course. 11. Candidates who do not meet the eligibility criteria for a scholarship may in some instances be considered for a Principal s Bursary, which is awarded at the Principal s discretion. 12. Immanuel Lutheran College will not enter into a dispute regarding the awarding of scholarships.
3 1. ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP Academic scholarships are based on achievement in an examination provided by ACER and a successful interview with the Principal. Immanuel invites existing students and those who wish to enter Immanuel Lutheran College to sit the scholarship test. Students entering Years 6 to 12 in 2018 are eligible to apply. To Apply: Applications can only be made online and candidates must logon to: and follow the prompts to register their details and submit payment. Testing is conducted by ACER, an independent organisation engaged by the College. Applications close on Wednesday, 15 March To be eligible for an Academic Scholarship, candidates must achieve within the 10% band, as per ACER testing reports. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement and application to studies. Tenure: Cost: Scholarships are offered for the duration of the recipient s enrolment at Immanuel Lutheran College. Scholarships are reviewed each semester and are subject to continued excellence in academic performance and abiding by College policies. Scholarship recipients are required to meet a grade point average each semester (equivalent to an Academic Gold or Academic Blue Award) and be actively involved in the College s co-curricular program. The registration fee is $ and this is paid directly to ACER. There is no refund for candidates who fail to sit the test. Testing Date: Saturday, 25 March 2017 Time: Approximately 9.00am to 12.00pm (Years 7 to 12 in 2018) Approximately 9.00am to 11.30am (Year 6 in 2018) Candidates need to arrive by 8.45am Testing Venue: Candidates will sit their Academic Scholarship test at: Ken Thamm Centre Lecture Theatre Immanuel Lutheran College Wises Road BUDERIM QLD 4556 Results The College does not provide candidates with actual scores or order of merit. However, candidates will receive a printed report, which provides information about their percentile ranking. Interviews will be arranged once the ACER test results are published. 1 P a g e
4 2. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP Immanuel Lutheran College offers an excellent music program which has a high profile within the College and wider community. Immanuel s music program includes various bands, orchestras, ensembles and choirs which perform at regular concerts and community events. Candidates applying for a Music Scholarship must be prepared to maintain their focus on the development of music for the duration of their scholarship and participate fully in the College s music program. Students entering Years 7 to 12 in 2018 are eligible to apply. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a successful audition and interview with a selection panel. To Apply: To apply for a Music Scholarship applicants must have attained at least a minimum Level/Grade 3 AMEB/Trinity or equivalent on their chosen instrument. Candidates must also demonstrate sound academic achievement. Candidates must complete a Music Scholarship application form, available on the College website: Please attach: 1. Copies of two recent academic reports and NAPLAN results. 2. Any other supporting documentation/certificates (copies only). The registration fee is $ There is no refund for candidates who fail to attend the audition and interview. Applications close on Wednesday, 15 March Process: Candidates will be shortlisted to attend an audition/interview with the Head of Arts and Instrumental Music Coordinator. 1. Candidates should be prepared to play/sing three contrasting performance pieces. 2. Candidates may be asked to perform scales and/or arpeggios from their latest completed examination level. For example, if the candidate has just completed Grade 3 Trinity Guildhall, the panellists may ask to hear any scale/arpeggio listed as a requirement for that particular level of examination in the current syllabus. Scales and arpeggios must be performed by memory and must be performed ascending and descending. 3. Where a candidate has indicated that they play more than one instrument, he/she will be required to demonstrate their ability on each of the instruments. 4. The audition process will include some aural testing and sight reading, as well as theoretical content, to gauge the applicant s general knowledge of music. 5. Piano accompaniment at the audition, if required, will need to be provided by the candidate. 2 P a g e

Scholarships are reviewed each semester and recipients are expected to maintain an active participation and membership of applicable ensembles/bands/choirs and the College s music program. A demonstrated commitment to their academic studies and adherence to College policies and Code of Conduct are also expected. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to attend an audition/interview. 6 3. ARTS SCHOLARSHIP Immanuel Lutheran College offers a diverse range of studies in the areas of Visual Art, Drama, Dance and Film, Television and New Media. The College seeks candidates who can think creatively; demonstrate a willingness to succeed in an Arts pathway and be able to provide evidence/portfolio in acknowledgement of their achievements and skills. Students entering Years 7 to 12 in 2018 are eligible to apply. 3.1 Visual Arts Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of a successful interview with the selection panel. The student has shown an advanced conceptual and refined approach to their artwork. They must be able to showcase technique, skill and knowledge of the Elements and Principles of Art through a variety of media. Candidates must also demonstrate sound academic achievement. To Apply: Candidates must complete an Arts Scholarship Visual Art application form, available on the College website: In addition, candidates will need to: 1. Submit a portfolio containing at least six pieces of work which would need to be presented in a display folio or a similar type of presentation wallet. Sculptural, relief, installation or large components will be submitted as a series of photographs of the piece/s. 2. Enclose examples of appraising work e.g. comparative or analytical essays. 3. Provide copies of two recent academic reports and NAPLAN results. 4. Attach any other supporting documentation (e.g. records of prizes, awards and certificates of participation). 8 3.2 Dance To Apply: To apply for a Dance Scholarship applicants must have at least 4 years experience at a dance school/academy. Candidates must have taken lessons in ballet and two or more other genres e.g. contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, tap. Candidates must also demonstrate sound academic achievement. Candidates must complete an Arts Scholarship Dance application form available on the College website: In addition, candidates will need to attach: 1. Copies of two recent academic reports and NAPLAN results. 2. Any other supporting documentation/certificates (copies only). The registration fee is $ There is no refund for candidates who fail to attend the audition and interview. Applications close on Wednesday, 15 March Process: Candidates will be shortlisted to attend an audition/interview. 1. Candidates will be asked to prepare three 2- minute routines as per the following genres: (1) Ballet (2) Contemporary (3) Candidate s choice of genre to be followed by a group workshop. Please note that candidates will be filmed during their performance. 2. Candidates will be required to wear a leotard and shorts. (Tights/shoes are optional). 3. Audition music is to be supplied on an ipod/iphone. Tenure: Scholarships are offered for the duration of the recipient s enrolment at Immanuel Lutheran College. Scholarships are reviewed each semester and are subject to active school participation. It is expected that a candidate in receipt of an Arts Scholarship based on Dance will study Dance as a subject and be involved in College performances. A demonstrated commitment to their academic studies and adherence to College policies and Code of Conduct are also expected. Scholarship recipients will be required to attend a review interview with the Principal/delegate in the year prior to commencing Year 10. Date & Venue: Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to attend an audition/interview. Results: All candidates will be informed in writing regarding the outcome of their application. 6 P a g e
9 3.3 Drama Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years experience in community theatre productions, participated in drama workshops and be actively involved with an amateur theatre group. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate an ability to critically analyse/review dramatic elements and have sound academic achievement. Candidates must complete an Arts Scholarship Drama application form available on the College website. In addition, candidates will need to: 1. Submit a portfolio/evidence of performance work. 2. Enclose examples of appraising work e.g. comparative or analytical essays based on a drama production/s. 3. Provide copies of two recent academic reports and NAPLAN results. 4. Attach any other supporting documentation (e.g. records of prizes, awards and certificates of participation). It is expected that a candidate in receipt of an Arts Scholarship-Drama will study Drama as a subject and be involved in College performances. A demonstrated commitment to their academic studies and adherence to College policies and Code of Conduct are also expected. Shortlisted candidates will be advised of the details regarding an audition and interview. All candidates will be informed in writing regarding the outcome of their application. 8 P a g e
11 3.4 Film and Media Candidates must be able to showcase a high level of creativity and knowledge in film/media production techniques and be able to critically analyse film/media genres. Candidates must also demonstrate sound academic achievement. To Apply: Candidates must complete an Arts Scholarship Film/Media application form available on the College website: In addition, candidates will need to: 1. Submit samples of their film or media productions via a video file either on a USB or via a YouTube or Vimeo link, Drop Box or via Google drive. 2. Enclose examples of appraising work e.g. comparative or analytical essays based on a genre of film or media. 3. Provide copies of two recent academic reports and NAPLAN results. 4. Attach any other supporting documentation (e.g. records of prizes, awards and certificates of participation). Applications close on Wednesday, 15 March Process: Candidates will be shortlisted to attend an interview. 1. Candidates will be required to pitch an original concept for a short film treatment and be prepared to answer questions from the panel. Tenure: Scholarships are offered for the duration of the recipient s enrolment at Immanuel Lutheran College. Scholarships are subject to an annual review and are subject to active school participation. It is expected that a candidate in receipt of an Arts Scholarship based on Film/Media will study Film, Television and New Media as a subject. Film/Media Arts Scholarship recipients may be required to assist with filming at College events. A demonstrated commitment to their academic studies and adherence to College policies and Code of Conduct are also expected. Date & Venue: Shortlisted applicants will be advised of the details of their audition/interview. 12 4. SPORT SCHOLARSHIP Sport Scholarships aim to develop and support individuals who are ideally engaged at a State or National level of representation in their chosen sport. The College aims to provide a flexible curriculum, training facilities and individual support to assist candidates to continue striving for excellence whilst making a positive contribution to the College s sporting programs. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a successful interview with the selection panel. Students entering Years 7 to 12 in 2018 are eligible to apply. To apply for a Sports Scholarship, candidates must satisfy the following criteria: 1. Demonstrate talent and potential in the nominated sport/s 2. Representation in one or more sports at a State or National level or an equivalent standard 3. Evidence of potential for leadership in nominated sport/s 4. Enthusiasm and commitment to the nominated sport/s 5. Must be prepared to make a significant ongoing contribution to Immanuel Lutheran College s sporting program 6. Sound academic achievement To Apply: Candidates must complete a Sports Scholarship application form available on the College website: In addition, candidates will need to provide copies of: 1. Certification from relevant coach regarding level of representation. 2. Reference/s from a coach or manager of a club or representative team who can attest to the candidate s achievements, commitment and sportsmanship. 3.
