3 National Association of Black Accountants St. Louis Metropolitan Chapter Dear Corporate Participant: On behalf of the NABA St. Louis Metropolitan Chapter, I would like to thank each of our corporate participants and members who continually contribute to the realization of our goals. Our success is a direct reflection of your care, commitment, and support of our student and professional members. We are extremely excited about this upcoming year and hope you are too. This year marks our 44 nd year of providing the following support to the St. Louis Metropolitan community: Recognizing high school and college students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic studies through Scholarship. Our scholarship program garners corporate and non-corporate contributions and has awarded over $319,000 in scholarships to NABA student members at University of Missouri- Columbia, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and local St. Louis Universities, colleges and high schools. Connecting corporations with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds Providing free tax return services through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) Providing Continuing Professional Educational (CPE) and Professional Development opportunities Mentoring students Financial Empowerment Programs In 2011, we added to our community support efforts through an educational enrichment program called ACAP - Accounting Career Awareness Program. ACAP is a week-long summer campus residency program where a select group of high school students are introduced to accounting, finance, economics, technology and management while providing the foundation of financial literacy and development of interpersonal skills. Its primary objective is to increase the number of high school students from under represented ethnic groups to attend college and major in accounting. I encourage your organization to participate with us on yet another exciting year as we go forward. We welcome your support in helping us create new opportunities for business and accounting students as well as professionals. Your active participation is an investment that will reap valuable dividends in the future. NABA is also a 501c3 organization, which allows all donations to be tax deductible. If you require additional information, please feel free to contact me at (314) or via at ddavis@naba-stl.org. Sincerely, Danette M. Davis Danette M. 4 NABA s History The National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) was established in New York City in 1969 by nine African-American accountants to deal forthrightly and effectively with the many common problems faced by the growing number of African-American professionals in the field of accounting. Since the founding of NABA s first chapter in 1970, membership has grown to more than 200 professional and student chapters across the country. NABA s membership includes individuals with diverse careers in accounting, finance, information technology and other business disciplines as well as students. About NABA s St. Louis Metropolitan Chapter NABA s St. Louis Metropolitan chapter was organized in 1972 in order to develop, encourage and serve as a local resource for greater participation by African-Americans and other minorities in the field of accounting and finance. Additionally, the St. Louis Metropolitan Chapter has awarded scholarships to over 285 students since its inception. Nationally, NABA has awarded more than $8.5 million, since the inception of the scholarship program. NABA s Mission and Goals NABA s mission is to address the professional needs of its members and to build leaders that shape the future of the accounting and finance professions, with an unfaltering commitment to inspire the same in their successors. NABA s Goals and Objectives are to: Promote and develop the professional skills of its members Encourage and assist African-American students in entering the accounting profession Provide opportunities for members to fulfill their civic responsibilities Promote public confidence in its members and the services they provide Encourage cordial relations among members and cooperative relationships with other professionals Represent the interests of current and prospective African-American accounting and business professionals Ensure long-term financial stability and provide adequate resources to implement chapter, regional and national programs Ensure that chapters operate at an effective level NABA s goals are to unite accountants and other business professionals, as well as accounting and business students, who are committed to professional and academic excellence. 4 N ational Association of Black Accountants St. Louis Chapter

5 St. Louis Professional and Student Member Programs NABA-St. Louis Scholarship Program During our Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet, we acknowledge and reward the best and brightest students who compete for scholarship dollars. In the past 14 years, NABA-St. Louis has awarded more than $319,000 in scholarships. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) NABA- St. Louis provides members with CPE certification through technical sessions held through-out the year and during the Annual National Convention. The national organization is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education and is on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. The seven fields of study include accounting & auditing, consulting services, ethics, management, personal development, special knowledge and applications & taxation. Student Chapter Ambassadors The professional members of NABA have a duty to continue Lifting As We Climb as we prepare the future generation of accountants by developing mentoring relationships with members of our area university and college student chapters. The St. Louis Chapter assigns each campus ambassadors who provide guidance, participate as speakers for student chapter events, and present a workshop entitled The Elements of Success. This workshop addresses resume writing, interviewing skills and business etiquette, in an effort to prepare our students to obtain internships and full-time positions upon graduation. Central Region Student Conference This conference, which takes place in the Fall, provides students with the opportunity to obtain cutting-edge information on industry trends, interview with employers from across the country and network with peers and professional NABA members. NABA Career Connections NABA-St. Louis connects its corporate representatives seeking to fill positions in accounting and auditing, consulting, finance, information technology, management and marketing with NABA members. From internships to executive level positions, visitors can inquire about job postings listed in our weekly newsletter and on the NABA St. Louis web site at Networking Outings Networking opportunities are scheduled with and for our corporate partners to develop and sustain the relationship between our corporate partners and our members. 5 N ational Association of Black Accountants St. Louis Chapter

6 Community and Outreach Services ACAP - A week-long summer program which introduces minority high school students to accounting, finance, economics, technology and management while providing the foundation of financial literacy and the development of interpersonal skills. Its primary objective is to increase the number of high school students from under represented ethnic groups to attend college and major in accounting. The ACAP Program will include team-building and financial literacy activities, case studies and workshop presentations made by professionals from various firms and corporations throughout the greater St. Louis area. An example of student workshops will include: accounting as a Career Choice, Resume Writing, Internal Controls Case Study, Exam Preparation, Leadership Skills, Business Etiquette and Public Speaking. The students will also have the opportunity to visit and interact with executives from local firms and corporations. ACAP facts: The program will be held at a local university during the Summer of Students attend ACAP with all expenses paid through funding obtained through corporate sponsorship, the co-host University, other accounting associations and societies. The cost for the week is approximately $1,000 per student. Students are selected for ACAP through an application and interview process. Each student selected should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, with the following exception: at least 10% of the targeted residency program population should be selected from students with a GPA ranging from Students should be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year. A very limited number of graduating students will be selected for the program. ACAP is open to all high school students from the St. Louis Metropolitan city and county public and private school systems The ACAP program can only be successful with assistance from corporate supporters who want to make a positive impact within our community. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program NABA-St. Louis Chapter s mission is to provide community outreach throughout the year. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is one of our community outreach initiatives. Starting in 1981, the Chapter reached out to various St. Louis neighborhoods to provide free income tax preparation. Since 1991, the St. Louis chapter officially partnered with IRS and Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health Center to continue this much needed service in the community. VITA clients are low-to-moderate-income earners, the elderly and disabled taxpayers. Because of NABA s efforts over the years, millions of dollars in tax refunds have flowed into the Metro St. Louis economy while saving clients millions in preparer fees. For the 2014 tax year, NABA processed almost $1 million in Federal and State tax returns and saved clients close to $200,000 in tax preparation fees. 6 N ational Association of Black Accountants St. Louis Chapter

7 Financial Empowerment Program NABA-St. Louis Chapter is dedicated to improving the financial education in all communities, by providing basic financial tools that allow individuals to establish realistic goals and work towards achieving them. We have expanded our reach to all persons in the St. Louis area and surrounding areas concerned about managing their financial futures; while keeping an eye on their immediate needs during tough economic conditions. Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club Annual All That Jazz Event NABA is involved in the community and supports the Annual All That Jazz Event which helps increase volunteerism, the donor base and awareness in the community about the Club and its programs. Festivities include auctions and entertainment from local jazz entertainers. NABA volunteers manage the auction payment station for the event and the auction items. Corporate Breakfast The Corporate Breakfast provides an opportunity for the corporate community to interact with NABA representatives and to receive insightful information about the organization locally and nationally. This is an avenue to articulate the goals, objectives, and accomplishments of the organization and allows the corporate sector to ask questions. Benefits of Corporate Participation As a corporate partner, you play a vital role in catapulting the vision of developing tomorrow s leaders into a reality.
