1 The mission of the Arabia Mountain High School (AMHS) Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is to encourage and enrich the educational, advocacy and volunteer experience of its students. It is with pride that we award these scholarships to encourage the furthering of their education beyond high school. These awards are given to students who have shown determination to enrich themselves with their high school experience and who give of themselves to their community. Awards: One $500 Scholarship PTSA Georgia Power Environmental Award One $500 Scholarship PTSA Business Entrepreneur Award One $500 Scholarship PTSA Rodney F. Swanson Excellence in Education Award One $500 Scholarship PTSA of AMHS Volunteer and Community Service Award One $500 Scholarship President Leadership Award One $500 Outstanding Citizen Award One $500 Arts in Education Award Deadlines: Deadline for membership is 5:00 pm - Friday, March 16, 2018 Application is due on 3:20 pm - Friday, April 20, PTSA Safe/Drop box or PTSA Mailbox in Parent Center All applications must be in a sealed envelope! Eligibility: Open to AMHS seniors PTSA members only 2.7 GPA Student must be pursuing a post-high school education Student should have demonstrated contributions to AMHS and the community Recipients must attend PTSA Awards night event in May 2018 Awards will be presented at Senior Awards Night in May and all recipients must attend. The checks will be issued upon receipt of proof of enrollment in a post-high school education program. This verification must be received by the PTSA of AMHS on or before October 1, Awards not claimed by October 1, 2018 will be forfeited by recipient. 1

2 Submission Requirements: 1. Must be a member of PTSA to apply. Deadline for Membership is 5:00 pm - Friday, March 16, Deadline for Application is 3:20 pm - Friday, April 20, A copy of your official high school transcript. Transcript must be in a sealed envelope provided by AMHS Counseling Department. 3. A 500 word essay applicable to each scholarship for which application is being submitted: a. Essay question for the PTSA Georgia Power Environmental Award. If you had to develop a campaign to promote a way(s) to be friendlier to the environment, what would it be? b. Essay question for the PTSA Business Entrepreneur Award. Describe what type of business you would like to start and why. Include what the educational requirements to become a business owner and what experience you believe it is important to have before starting his or her own business. Finally, once the business becomes successful, what responsibility, if any, should a successful business have to the community? c. Essay question for the Rodney F. Swanson Excellence in Education. The vision of Arabia Mountain is to create a nationally recognized school of excellence with students who compete and excel on all levels in a rapidly changing world through stability, significance, opportunities, and traditions. How do you use the principles of stability, significance, opportunity, and tradition to compete and excel academically? d. Essay question for the PTSA of AMHS Volunteer Award. Volunteerism is the cornerstone of the PTSA of AMHS. Active support comes from not only parents, but also teachers, students, and administrators. Without the support of volunteers, each doing their part to make AMHS great, the PTSA of AMHS would not be able to continue to make strides to improve the academic experience for each student at AMHS. Explain in detail why you believe it is important to volunteer your time and effort, and provide an example of your most fulfilling community-service project. e. Essay question for the President Leadership Award. Define what leadership means to you and describe how you incorporated leadership and character in your school, work, or community. f. Essay question for the Outstanding Citizen Award. The mission for Arabia Mountain High School is to engage students in active learning and service through collaborative instruction using the school and community as context for developing understanding of human and environmental interactions while preparing leaders for involved citizenship in a changing world. If you had the authority to change your community in a positive way, what specific changes would you make? g. Essay question for the PTSA Arts In Education Award. Explain how The Arts can influence and enlighten us in our educational development and growth, and describe how The Arts have impacted your growth and development throughout your education. 2

Chronological listing of community involvement and extra-curricular activities Selection: Recipients will be selected by an outside panel of educators and corporate sponsor. A PTSA Executive Committee member will serve as an overseer but will not have voting rights. Scholarship Payment: Checks will be issued upon receipt of proof of enrollment in a post-high school education program received by October 1, proof of enrollment to treasuer@arabiaptsa.org and vp_academics@arabiaptsa.org. Awards not claimed by October 1, 2018 will be forfeited by award recipients. 3
