2 Brief about Delhi Section: Delhi Section is one of the largest sections in IEEE. Delhi Section is one of the 11 Sections in India and is under the Region 10 (Asia-Pacific) of IEEE. Completed 40 yrs. It covers entire northern part of the country consisting of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, Union Territory of Chandigarh and the five states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. It has got two Subsection at Chandigarh and Rajasthan Seventeen Society Chapters and Four Affinity Groups IEEE Delhi Section has as per latest (December 2016) statistics 4599 active Members (excluding Society Affiliates), consisting of 4 Life Fellow, 7 Fellow, 26 Life Senior, 265 Senior Member, 4 Life Member, 1203 Member, 35 Associate Member, 655 Graduate Student Member, 2400 Student Member 90+ student branches

3 Brief Introduction of PES Delhi Chapter: The joint Chapter of Power & Energy Society and Industry Applications Society started in Delhi with Prof. B. Prasad Singh, SMIEEE of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi as its interim Chairman on June 12, In the year 2000 Chapter received PES Outstanding Chapter Award (Small) and in 2003, 2006, and 2013 PES Outstanding Chapter Award (Large) In 2009, 2016 and 2017 Outstanding Large Joint Chapter Award from IAS. In 2001 its Founder-Chairman Prof. B.P.Singh received the first Regional Outstanding Engineer Award. In the year 2002 also this award was won by Dr. Subrata Mukhopadhyay, from Delhi Chapter.

4 Achievements in 2016: 3 students from IIT Mandi received Myron Zucker Undergraduate Student Design Contest Award. The Chapter organized membership drives and improved the membership as a result of which total membership has increased from 284 to members were elevated to Senior members. Two (2) members are elevated to IEEE Fellow in 2017 namely Prof. (Mrs.) Gurumoorthy Bhuvaneshwari, IIT Delhi and Shri Sushil Soonee, POSOCO, both from IEEE PES Delhi Section. Chapter has received $930 as PES HPCP award IEEE IAS Outstanding Large Joint Chapter Award 2016.

5 Planning and Preparation by the Chapter: The year 2016 began with an enthusiasm for the PES Chapter committed to prove its mettle and to provide maximum advantage to its members. In the first EXECOM meeting itself different committees were formed. o Industry Interaction o Membership Development o Student Activities o WIE Activities o Young Professional Activities o Continuing Education o Outstation Activities Care was taken to include activities for the academia and industry alike and also for students, YPs, GSMs and WIE members. We keep track of eminent personalities coming to India and invite them for guest lectures/workshops etc.

6 The Chapter has more than 5 Student branch PES Chapters under its wings, for which help is provided every year. o Subscription of the students from 2 nd year of membership onwards is reimbursed by the chapter o INR 10,000 per annum is provided to each student PES chapter for Industrial visit. o Outreach program to motivate school students into power engineering Membership Growth/Retention : o Conference organisers are requested to have a special drive during conferences. o Whenever any execom member goes to conferences or course as guest, we try to put in a few words about PES. o The awareness in students have also been created by giving presentations about PES chapters in Student Congress held in section/student Chapters. Fund Generation: o Surplus from the conferences o By organising workshops etc.

7 Summary of 2016 Activities: The Chapter maintains a website ( updated frequently through which the members get to know of all the activities, report of the activities and other information about the Chapter. The Chapter organized around 70 activities in are administrative (4 execom meeting and 1 AGM), 19 professional and 46 technical activities. The technical activities include conferences, workshops, seminars and lectures on relevant and appropriate topics, which also enhanced the membership development. 20 th Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Lecture was organized on Dec. 09, 2016 at DTU Delhi and was delivered by Prof. Ambrish Chandra, Universié du Québec, Montréal, Canada on the topic 'Hybrid Renewable Energy Standalone Systems'.

8 8 This year 4 conferences were organized, namely, ICPS-2016 during March 4-6, 2016 at IIT Delhi, IICPE 2016 during Nov , 2016 at Patiala Punjab, PICON 2016 during Nov , 2016 at Bikaner Rajasthan and ICPEICES-2016 during July 4-6, 2016 at DTU Delhi. A PES DL talk on 'Opportunities for energy efficiency applications in commercial buildings in India delivered by Prof. Saifur Rahman, Virginia Tech on at Faculty of Engg. JMI Delhi

9 9 Pre conference tutorial (ICPEICES 2016) was delivered by Prof. Gopakumar, FIEEE on, PWM Techniques for Inverter Control for Variable Frequency Operation on 3 rd July A one day interactive workshop Shine Rural India with Renewables on 13 th December, 2016 has been organized along with IEEE SIGHT, which saw participation from school children to engineering professionals.

10 10 Generous support was given to students for industrial visits/workshops. A workshop for Graduate student members and for WIE members on Real-time System, Data Acquisition and FPGA has been conducted at IIT Mandi. A Design and painting competition for School going children with Theme on "Energy Saving and Innovations" was organised with trip to Engineering/Sciences lab. at IIT Mandi.

11 11 Under IEEE PES Member Driven Initiatives, four (4) proposals were funded with support of US$ 5000 and successfully organized. Student Design Contest for Developing Low Cost and Efficient Renewable Energy based Applications "Energy Saving and Innovation in the Usage of Renewable Energy for school children

12 12 Dr. Edvina, VP Education IEEE PES visited the chapter in Dec 2016 and interacted with the execom members of the chapter. A professional talk on Role of Smart Engineers in Future by Prof. Francisco Gonzallez Longatt, Loughborough University

13 The chapter also provided support in holding the Women in Power Conference on March 11th and 12 th, 2017 at IHC Delhi, attended by Dr Shay Bahramirad, Ms.Zainab Taiwo, Prof. Celia Shahnaz amongst others. 13

14 Future Vision: Many more quality technical activities are planned for 2017 including DLs, workshops, conferences etc. 21 st Thomas Elva Edison Memorial lecture will be organised The Chapter is planning to have more activities with 'Women in Engineering' and Young Professionals affinity groups. To encourage the participation of student members, Outstanding Student Volunteer Award to be initiated and new student chapters to be formed. Emphasis will be given to the elevation of members to higher grade. Delhi Chapter execom always have a YP representative, but in the upcoming execom, one student and one WIE representative will also be included. Outstanding chapter Engineer award to the deserving PES member. Problems & Concerns: No specific problem is faced by the chapter. Getting dedicated volunteers outside Delhi is becoming difficult. Also, although GSMs are involved in PES activities, but involving YPs from Industries is tough.
