3 About Korea Institute for International Economic Policy The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), established in 1989, is a government-funded economic research institute addressing the international economy and its relationship with Korea. KIEP has aimed to be a regional hub for international economic policy research, and has served as a warehouse of information on Korea s international economic policies for nearly 30 years. As a government-funded research institute, we have accomplished critical research and in-depth analysis on international economic policy issues, in areas such as international macroeconomics, finance, trade and commerce, international investment, international financial cooperation, and regional studies for a variety of governmental agencies and research partners. KIEP has an affiliate in Beijing, and also works in partnership with the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI) located in Washington D.C. KIEP also operates National Center for APEC Studies from our institute. KIEP continually strives to provide effective research reports on various international economic issues, and expanding cooperation has been an important part of these efforts. In addition to many joint projects, KIEP has formed many close partnerships with the world s leading research institutes and has established a broad network with over 80 overseas institutions. KIEP boasts a highly knowledgeable economic research staff. Now numbering over 200 members, our staff includes over 50 research fellows with PhDs in economics and related fields. 4 About the Program KIEP invites prominent researchers and academics to join its Visiting Scholars Program. In 2009, the program was launched with a view to advancing cross-border exchanges of knowledge, information, insight, and expertise among scholars with different backgrounds. The duration of the program is one month and visiting scholars will reside and work in Sejong. Visiting scholars are expected to actively engage in networking and research activities during their visit to KIEP. KIEP will provide various supports to help visiting scholars achieve their goals and make the best out of their participation in the program. KIEP Visiting Scholars Program 04

5 Eligibility Criteria They should hold either a doctoral or a master's degree with at least 7 years of relevant professional experiences after obtaining the degree. Korean citizens and Korean nationals with permanent residence status in foreign countries are not eligible to apply. Foreign scholars in the field of international economics, emerging economies, economic policies and the like are welcome to apply. Working knowledge of English is required. 6 Duties & Responsibilities Visiting scholars should be able to fulfill the duties and responsibilities listed below. conduct an independent research and produce a report on the research findings in the form of KIEP World Economy Brief. required The KIEP World Economy Brief (WEB) is a five-page English report on the analysis of current issues related to various topics including economic cooperation, trade, investment, employment, and structural reforms, which aims to draw policy implications for South Korea. As for publications, please refer to the KIEP website ( give a presentation on the research during a KIEP Visiting Scholar s Seminar. required give lectures at graduate schools in Korea on topics of the scholar s choosing. optional KIEP Visiting Scholars Program participate in a meeting with Korean undergraduate/graduate students who are interested in the region or research area of the scholar. optional write an article on recent issues of the politics/economy/society of the scholar's country in the form of an EMERiCs column. optional engage in seminars, workshops, conferences, and other appropriate events organized internally at KIEP or at relevant external events. optional 06

7 Benefits The program offers visiting scholars the following benefits. stipend for the cost-of-living in Sejong and research activities at KIEP round-trip airfare for economy class and the most efficient route and visa application fees (to be reimbursed after arriving in Korea) accommodation in Sejong insurance The stipend will be approximately KRW 2,800,000 for a month of program duration The amount will vary depending on the exact duration of each scholar s visit to KIEP and be determined in accordance with rules of the institute. The stipend will be provided in two installments, at the beginning and end of the program a KIEP Mentor will be available for consultation in regard to publishing the WEB manuscript and networking in KIEP. 8 Application & Selection KIEP accepts applications yearround and selections will be made on a half-yearly basis in the early 1 June and December of the year. Please submit your application The application should include Application Form, Curriculum 2 to outreach@kiep.go.kr by the end of May or November to be considered for a committee review. Vitae, Letter of Recommendation, and One Publication that represents the best research/ 3 KIEP Visiting Scholars Program academic performance of the applicant. 4 Applicants will be notified whether their application has been successful in due course following a committee review. 08
