2 EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY Charleston, Illinois HARRY READ, Director of Information and Publications (217) May 10, 1982 Hometowns FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CHARLESTON, IL--Business students at Eastern Illinois University have been honored for academic achievement. Awards ranged from scholarship keys to grants. In addition to grants by business firms, the awards include memorials by private individuals and recognition by the following clubs, societies and fraternal organizations in the School of Business: Pi Omega Pi, honor society in business teacher education; Delta Sigma Pi, a professional fraternity in business administration; Phi Beta Lambda, professional fraternity in business education; Delta Mu Delta, honor society in business administration; Phi Gamma Nu, a professional sorority in business administration; the Accounting Club; Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association; the Student Chapter of the Data Processing Management Association; the Collegiate Business Women; the student chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management; the EIU Society for Personal Administration; Beta Tau Upsilon, an energy management society; and the Financial Management Association, a society concerning the field of finance. Attached is a list of the recipients as announced by the School of Business. Tracy Garren, senior of Charleston, was awarded the distinction of being the Pi Omega Pi Outstanding Graduate in business teacher education for the year. Her name will appear on a plaque in the hall of the Department of Business Education with the names of winners in previous years. This award is made annually by Pi Omega Pi on the basis of scholarship and service during the years in College. Phyllis Latimer, senior of Marengo, won the National Business Education Association Merit This award, sponsored annually by the National Business Education Association, goes to a business education senior who shows great promise in the field of teaching and whose interest in further study and professional growth

3 Page 2 has been demonstrated. It entitles the holder to a comprehensive membership in the National Business Association together with subscriptions to the periodicals published by the Association. It also entitles the holder to a monogrammed leather binder with which to bind issues of the periodicals. Michael D. Oppe, senior of Peoria, received the Wall Street Journal It goes annually to the senior whose scholarship and interest in the fields of finance and business administration promise success in business. It entitles the holder to an engraved emblem sponsored by the publisher of the WALL STREET JOURNAL, and to a year's subscription to the WALL STREET JOURNAL, a nationally recognized newspaper of financial and business management interests. As a result of the award his name will appear on a plaque in the hall of the School of Business with the names of previous winners. Six juniors were named winners of the Simmons Memorial Awards. The awards carry stipends of $100 each. The first of these awards was established in 1959 by the late Mrs. w. c. Simmons of Charleston in memory of her husband. Other awards were established in 1969 by Mrs. Mary Sue LaRue, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. w. c. Simmons, in memory of her parents. The awards are made annually to junior business majors on the basis of outstanding personal character, scholastic achievement and interest in the fields of business. The winners, selected by the School of Business Faculty, were: Todd Kabbes, of Effingham; Kelly Patton, of Decatur; Timothy Pechukas, of Oaklawn; Janis Beutler, of New Baden; Linda Vojtesak, of Joliet; and Dawn Mangini, of Berwyn. Marshall C. Crutcher, junior of Tower Hill, won the Ernst and Whinney Accountancy Grant. The grant is made annually to a junior who shows promise of distinction in the field of public accounting and whose interest lies in public accounting. The grant carries a stipend of $250 for the recipient. The recipient is selected by the Accounting faculty members.

4 Page 3 Cynthia Mendenhall, junior of Mattoon, received the Jane Lahey Memorial This award was created by contributions from friends of the late Jane Lahey, a member of the School of Business staff until her death some years ago. It carries a stipend of $100 for the recipient. It is made annually to a junior business major whose personal character, scholastic achievement, and interest in the fields of business and education promise service of distinction in the field of teaching or education for business. Selection is by members of the Business Education Department faculty. Cynthia Linder, junior of Flora; Cathy Lysaker, junior of Mascoutah; and Sheryl Thayer, junior of Clinton, each won the Alexander Briggs Memorial The award was established in 1964 by the late Margaret Briggs in memory of her father, Alexander Briggs, the contractor who completed the Main Building of the University in The award is made annually to a business major who has completed at least one year of college with not less than a "B" average, and who is selected by the members of the business faculty on the basis of outstanding personal character and interest in the field of business and business education. Diana s. Myers, sophomore of Flora, received the Pi Omega Pi High Scholarship Underclassman This award is made annually by Pi Omega Pi to the underclass business education major with the highest scholarship average. Brenda Eden, senior of Robinson, won the Eastern Illinois University School of Busines~ Outstandin~ Marketing Association This award is made annually by the Eastern Illinois University chapter of the American Marketing Association to a club member on the basis of personal character, scholarship, and contribution to the activities of the club. Carolyn Eaves, sophomore of Palatine, received the Society for Advancement of Management This award goes annually to a member of the campus chapter whose professional attitude, scholarship and activity promise distinction in the growing field of management science. She has served the campus chapter of the organization as vice president for chapter efficiency during the year.

5 Page 4 Mary Zucksworth, junior of Smithboro, received the AccountAncy Outstanding Junior This award, established by the Accounting Club in 1965, is made annually to the junior whose scholarship, effort, and attitude promise success in the profession of accounting. It carries a three-year paid membership in the American Accounting Association together with the periodicals and publications the membership brings. Ann Gillespie, junior of Glen Ellyn, won the McGladrey, Hendrickson & Co. Accountancy Grant. This grant goes to a junior who shows promise of distinction in the field of public accounting. The grant carries a stipend of $250. The recipient is selected by the accounting faculty. Laura Kolbe, junior of Morris, received the Phi Beta Lambda Leadership This award is made annually to the member of this professional business fraternity whose leadership in behalf of the organizational activities has been distinctive during the year. Her name will be inscribed on a plaque in the School of Business. Kimberly Fisch, senior of Carthage, won the Phi Beta Lambda Service This award goes annually to the member of this professional business fraternity whose scholarship and work in behalf of the organization have figured heavily in the success of its efforts during the course of the year. Her name will be inscribed on a plaque in the corridor of the School of Business. Thomas L. Deimel, senior of Olney, received the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key. The key is awarded annually by Delta Sigma Pi, the international professional fraternity for business administration, to the senior graduating with the highest cumulative grade point average. Tracy Roberts, senior of Penfield, won the Earl s. Dickerson Accounting Senior This award is made annually to the senior accounting major whose scholarship, character, and effort promise service of distinction in the profession of accounting. The award was established in 1965 by members of the Accounting Club in honor of Dr. Earl s. Dickerson, former member of the accounting staff who retired in 1965 after thirty years of service to the University. The award winner's name will appear on a plaque that hangs

6 Page 5 in the corridor of the department. The winner also receives a pen set as an appropriate professional symbol. Patrick Auffenorde, sophomore of Charleston, won the Delta Mu Delta Sophomore Achievement It is made annually to the business administration major completing the sophomore year with the highest grade point average. The student must have attended Eastern Illinois University at least one year while establishing the average. As a result of the award, his name will appear on a plaque in the Delta Mu Delta display case in the School of Business. Bernard Geolat, senior of Belleville, received the Computer Management Scholarship This award was established by student members of the Collegiate Chapter of the Data Processing Management Association to recognize and distinguish the student whose personal qualities, work habits, interest and success in the study of computer science promise distinction in the field of computer management. His name will appear on a plaque in the Hall of the School of Business. Sharon Berlin, senior of South Holland, won the Computer Management Service This award was established by student members of the Collegiate Chapter of the Data Processing Management Association to recognize and distinguish the student whose personal qualities, work habits, interest and service to the organization promise service of distinction in the field of computer management. Her name will appear on a plaque in the Hall of the School of Business. Mary Jane Snyder, senior of Rantoul, received the Phi Gamma Nu Scholarship Key, an award given by Phi Gamma Nu, professional sorority in business administration. The award is made annually to the senior with the highest cumulative grade point average in business and economics. Roxanna K. Champion, junior of Rochester; Todd Kabbes, junior of Effingham; Lisa McElmury, junior of Matteson; Kelly Patton, junior of Decatur; Teri L. Radosevich, junior of Collinsville; and Thomas c. Zentefis, junior of Chicago each was awarded Eunice K. Dougherty Scholarships. The scholarships carry a stipend of $500 each.

7 Page 6 Twenty-six such awards were provided by the estate of the late Eunice K. Dougherty, an elderly graduate of Eastern. The scholarships are made to juniors in the top quarter of their class. Selection of the recipients is by a committee of deans. Joan Irrera, junior of East Peoria, was given the Leslie Ann Moore Memorial The award is given annually by Dr. and Mrs. John Moore in memory of their daughter, Leslie Ann, whose untimely death in an auto accident cut short a promising career in marketing. The award is accompanied by a stipend. Dr. Moore is a member of the faculty of the School of Business. Four students won grants provided by funds given the Department of Management Marketing by the Caterpillar Company and the Marathon Company. The grants went to two students of marketing: Alice Clemens, senior of Yorkville, and Mike Weidman, senior of Park Forrest; and to two students of management: Mary Jane Snyder, senior of Rantoul, and Steve Norton, senior of Waukegan. Selection of the recipients was by members of the faculty of the Department of Management-Marketing. Gris Dahlin, senior of Paris, was recognized as the School of Business Outstanding Marketing Student at the St. Louis Regional Meeting of the American Marketing Association. Mr. Dahlin is President of the Eastern Illinois University student chapter of the American Marketing Association. Melissa Testroet, senior of Country Club Hills, was cited by the Central Illinois Chapter of the American Marketing Association with an Outstanding Student Randall s. Rissman, senior of Byron, received the Financial Management Association This award was established by student members of the Collegiate Chapter of the Financial Management Association to recognize and distinguish the student whose personal qualities, work habits, interest and service to the organization promise service of distinction in the field of finance.
