October is the Rotary Economic and Community Development Month. On a daily basis nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day & Rotary members are passionate about providing sustainable solutions to poverty. We intentionally invest in communities by where we create opportunities to help individuals & communities thrive financially & socially Here are some important dates to look out for this month. 2-8 October Rotary Alumni Reconnect Week 24 October Rotary s World Polio Day Live Stream Event 30 October-5 November World Interact Week Rotarians intentionally train people to become resources for their community, offering networking activities, advice on new business development, and mathematics and financial management training. 4 October is the Economic and Community development month and through my travels, I have tried to discern the kind of Projects undertaken in this TRF major area of focus. From The DISTRICT GOVERNOR District 9212 is a very big District and the month of September was the month that saw me in some of the farthest corners of our District. The farthest club was RC WAU which is 700km from capital city Juba, South Sudan which is itself some 1200 km from Nairobi. Wau is a city suffering from the ravages of civil war but filled with friendly and hopeful residents. I chartered four new Interact clubs as the club organized a huge half day celebration led by their very vibrant lady President Susan Nyabonyi and their equally dynamic Assistant Governor Francis Butili. The joint charter event was attended by over 600 interactors and locals and was graced by County leaders including the cabinet minister, mayor and deputy governor, airport boss and others. I had not visited a war zone before and the Idea of closing down the shops at 3pm and getting home or to your hotel before 6pm was very strange to me. However the resilience, the hopeful attitudes and enthusiasm of Interactors and the strong believe that things will get better is what I will always remember. I did my best to raise their morale and I was pleased to note their Joy and appreciation for my taking the trouble to visit and encourage them despite the odds. 4

5 FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR The following day after I arrived from South Sudan, I was planting mangroves trees in the Sandy Beaches of Mombasa 540km from Nairobi. As I planted many Mangrove trees until dusk, I reflected on how easy life is in Kenya and how most people in the world take the Issues of peace lightly. While still in Mombasa I visited a packed drug rehabilitation center where despite my lack of experience in dealing with drug addicts, I gave them a message of hope. I was surprised when they gave me a hearty applause when I wished a quick recovery and return to normal life. A few days later I was in Johannesburg attending the zone 20A Institute and was delighted to meet Rotary International President Ian Riseley and other leaders of Rotary. The Institute lived to its expectations as a wonderful forum for learning, exchanging Ideas and Interacting directly with the top RI Leadership. It was also held in an exciting setting and venue which provided a welcoming break from my otherwise grueling schedule as District Governor. The third week found me in some of the very beautiful and extremely productive highlands of Ethiopia in the city of Jimma, some 300km from Addis Ababa (another 1200km from Nairobi). This is the places where coffee was first found to grow wild and it was there that Ethiopians first enjoyed a cup of coffee. It was pleasant to find prosperous. and highly educated Rotarians doing great work for their communities including planting of trees in a forest rehabilitation project. Another visit in the Northern direction of Debre Birhan convinced me that Ethiopia is a blessed country when you compare it with the terrain and vegetation of countries like Kenya. I visited two clubs in Debre Birhan, both doing excellent services to their communities. I encouraged them to do even better and I was elated to find out how well the Ethiopian Rotarians had received the message including 4 Rotarians taking up a Paul Harris on the spot at the USD 500 offer. Community development month and through my travels, I have tried to discern the kind of Projects undertaken in this TRF major area of focus. I have noticed three projects namely: 1. Nderi Water Project by RC Muthaiga is a community water supply project that is ran by a project committee drawn from the community. It is a self sustaining project complete with employees and managers and serves a large community. Provision of clean drinking water to this community has seen the area rise to a middle income community and has attracted a new middle class to settle in the area. 2. The club of Rotary club of Mombasa Downtown has been working with the Youth group that has embarked on the restoration of a mangrove forest and the rearing of sea fish in the Ponds. This has seen the youth develop to a level that they can sustain themselves and earn them a great esteem among their peers and community. 3. The last one is a story that I heard at the Johannesburg zone 20A Institute. A well-wisher was assisting in educating school children from a very poor family in Asia. After a few years of doing that, the father of the Children coyly approached the well-wisher and told her that if she really wanted to help the family, she should help buy him a water buffalo. After much thought and fundraising (buffaloes do not come cheap) she bought him the buffalo and from that time, he educates his children from his earnings, he has become prosperous and is able to assist others as well, totally removing any need for assistance. I urge all of us to undertake projects that empower communities; you will then have lived true to our theme this year of Rotary, Making a Difference in the lives of those beneficiaries. 6 PRESIDENTIAL Message On 24 October, we will mark World Polio Day. It is a day to celebrate how far we have come and an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness and funds to complete the work of eradication. I ask every Rotary club to participate in some way in World Polio Day activities.. Some years ago in the Melbourne, Australia, museum where my daughter used to work, an iron lung was on display. For most people my age who remembered the terrifying polio epidemics of the 1950s, that iron lung was a testament to how far vaccination had brought us: to the point where that oncecritical piece of medical equipment had literally become a museum piece. For much of the world, the story of polio is a simple one: After years of fear, a vaccine was developed and a disease was conquered. But for some of the world, the story was different. In so many countries, the vaccine wasn t available, mass vaccination was too expensive, or children simply couldn t be reached. While the rest of the world relegated polio to its museums, in these countries, the disease continued to rage until Rotary stepped forward and said that all children, no matter where they lived or what their circumstances, deserved to live free of polio. In the years since PolioPlus was launched, the combined efforts of Rotary, the governments of the world, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have brought the number of cases of polio down from an estimated 350,000 per year to just a few so far in But we must reach zero cases, and stay there, to achieve eradication. To do that, we need everyone s help. On 24 October, we will mark World Polio Day. It is a day to celebrate how far we have come and an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness and funds to complete the work of eradication. I ask every Rotary club to participate in some way in World Polio Day activities, and I encourage you to visit endpolio.org for ideas and to register your event. Whether you host a silent auction, a virtual reality viewing, a fundraising walk, or a Purple Pinkie Day, your club can make a real difference. This year, our World Polio Day livestream event will take place at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle; you can watch it on endpolio.org beginning at 2:30 p.m. Pacific time. As many of you know, Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a year for the next three years. This amount will be matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation effectively tripling the value of all money Rotary raises on World Polio Day and throughout the year. Like many of you, I want to be able to tell my grandchildren that I was a true part of the effort that eradicated Polio from the face of the earth. You may have participated in a vaccination campaign like I did many years ago; or you may have participated in a Polio-awareness walk like many of us have done; or may have made a small contribution to Rotary to help defray the costs of this enormous effort! The world will be celebrating World Polio Day. For Rotary this is a phenomenal event as we face The Last Mile in this journey. Clubs are encouraged to do events to commemorate this day. It could be a Polio awareness walk, a Polio Fund raiser, a football game, or may other innovations clubs may feel able to perform. For individuals, we are encouraged to make donations to the Rotary Foundation for Polio. My appeal is for every Rotarian in our District to give a minimum of US 10 (Ksh. 1,000) to ensure our District is on the map for this Endgame! We could give more but let no one miss out. It counts towards our PHF/ Major Donor status too. 16 Rotary Club of Milimani s flagship Scholarship Project The unique feature of Milimani Scholarship Program is the focus on students who may not be exceptional in academics but show potential and are needy This is different because most scholarship funds go for bright students. Rotary Club of Milimani flagship project is scholarship fund for needy students that enables them to go through highs chool. RCM Scholarship Program focuses on students from Mukuru slums in Nairobi South B. Most of the beneficiaries sat for their primary school certificate (KCPE) at St. Catherine Primary School in South B. The school is located across the road from the slum so the children walk to school easily. The unique feature of Milimani Scholarship Program is the focus on students who may not be exceptional in academics but show potential and are needy. This is different because most scholarship funds go for bright students. This has gone a long way in uplifting the life of the many students and their families. The students are sponsored through secondary school and some through college. The positive results of this is that some of these average students pick up in high school and manage to get admission into public universities. This has led RCM to insist that it is mandatory for beneficiaries to go to public boarding schools. This helps to take the students from the slum environment to help them concentrate on their studies. The parents are also incorporated and encouraged to be pro-active in guiding the students well whenever they are on school holidays. sponsor some students in the program. In the region, Rotary Club of Kampala Central, Rotary Club of Madaraka have also come on board to sponsor students. To provide mentorships, RCM holds REMS (Rotary Club of Emsdetten and Milimani) every school holiday months of April, August and December. This is when the previous term s performance is reviewed and they are assisted and encouraged to work harder. RCM seeks to empower the beneficiaries to be responsible citizens and give back to society in their own ways. Currently there are twenty students who are active in the program. Other beneficiaries who are now in employment and in colleges are planning to form an alumni association so as to take part in mentoring the current beneficiaries. The poster child of the program is Susan Moenga who is currently doing her PhD at University of California - Davies and is a member of Rotary Club of Davies in California. To raise funds for the program, RCM holds a golf tournament every year. The support from corporates, Rotarians and friends of Rotary has been enormous. Though we have fallen short of our target many times, the funds raised have gone into Making a Difference in the lives of needy students. GROWING LOCAL ECONOMIES Nderi project was initiated by our Past President Eng. Kamunyu Kahenya who lives in the area, he identified and developed the initial plan. We have had three sub projects running in the area as follows: 1. A borehole for the community with water storage and distribution providing to 500 families in the area opened by the immediate past DG. (Global Grant with the Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Uelzen Germany). 2. A school library and computers for a computer lab in Nderi Primary School (Global Grant with the Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Uelzen Germany). 3. An administration block housing the headmaster, his secretary and the computer laboratory (Matching project between Rotary Muthaiga, Rotary Club of Uelzen and a German Charity known as Bingo) Last month (during DG s Club Visit) ground breaking of the administration block project (3) was done at Nderi Primary School which started in 1958 and caters for 600 students; both boys and girls. Inside are some of the students The Rotary Club of Munuki president Tutu led the team of 6 Rotarians; he stated the main purpose of the visit as being assessment of the needs of the school and the basic necessities of the students. We were welcomed by one female teacher called Mr.s. Zylpha Wisely Kiteno who is currently the one managing and teaching 34 students who constitute the entire school population. There is lack of enough money for the teachers that made one of the teacher to live, rampant theft where by the school office and classrooms doors were broken and all the chairs and the books of the students were stolen including the chairs for the church, most of the parents are unable to complete all the school fees required per year says the teacher The Picture shows some of the students of Kopuri Primary School, Rotary Club of Munuki president Rtn. The office was broken by thieves at night and all the materials were taken such as books, pens and all the materials for the students including all the chairs for the church. Therefore, RCM identified the following needs to provided to the school and students 1. The rotary Club want to meet the Chairman so as to know whether the school is given to them or not in order to provide the services they intend. 2. Each student shall get 4 exercise books, 2 pencils, 1 paper bag, 1 teachers guide book, 2 red pens for marking, a box of chalk, a book for the teacher for scheming or writing her notes, a blackboard, Charts for alphabets and numbers. 18

19 INTERACT CLUB OF LOYOLA SECONDARY SCHOOL-WAU, SOUTH SUDAN: Background to the Loyola Interact Club; By Wisdom Justin President Interact Club of Loyola Secondary School. The interact club of Loyola Secondary School-Wau, was chartered on date 17th of June It was initiated by the Rotary club of Wau under the auspices of Assistant Governor Mr. Francis Butili and President Ms. Susan Nyabonyi in collaboration with the principle of Loyola secondary school Rev. Fr. Beatus Mauki and the school Head- Girl Nyayo Rejoice. Under the moto together we make a change, the charter members felt the need to be united in the midst of the difficult situation of the community living in conflict. It is the influence of No man is an island, that inspired the members to work together against selfish interests and put national and community interests first as they share whatever they have in common. Every three Saturdays in a month, the 35 member s of the Interact Club of Loyola meet to plan and discuss ways of how to intervene on any pressing situation in Wau town beginning from their school environment. 21 At Tower of Hope, the club donated books, pencils, erasers as well as gifts for the students and teachers. Further, a potential water harvesting project was identified. The area receives adequate rainfall. However, without a way to harvest the water, most of it goes to waste. A water harvesting solution was seen as potentially beneficial to the school. The weekend of 8-10th September was one of Rotary In Action as Rotary Club of Hurlingham, joined by members of Rotary Club Of Kitale, visited various schools in the Kitale and Mt Elgon region. The tour begun on 8th September as the clubs visited Mitua Girl s High School in the Brigadier area of Kitale with the intention of setting up an interact club. We were joined by Gideon Akwaba of RC Nairobi. The proposal was well received by both the students and the school administration and the interest is being followed up. The Rotarians also planted trees in the school, heeding the call of DG Peter Mbui to plant 1.2 million trees under his leadership. The tree planting exercise was a common theme through the weekend at all the schools that were visited. On Saturday 9th the Rotarians of Rotary Club of Hurlingham were back in action, beginning with a visit to both Kaptalelio Primary and Secondary school to plant trees and sensitize the students on the importance of planting trees and general environmental conservation. After that, the Rotarians moved on to Tower Of Hope Educational Center.This is a school currently providing classes from pre-primary to Standard 4. It has grown from a student population of 4 in 2011, to the current 97, mainly drawn from single parent homes. The Chairman/ Patron Kirui Chemwotei and the community were very welcoming and appreciative of the kind gesture of Rotarians. At Tower of Hope, the club donated books, pencils, erasers as well as gifts for the students and teachers. A donation of KES 50,000 from Dukestop Logistics (where current RC Hurlingham club president Saum Siraj is the Managing Director) was given to the school for running operations. To Mr. Kirui who went to school at Kapatlelio Primary School, he says we have given the pupils, teachers and community who are from the Sabaot Tribe lots of hope that their future is going to be much better. This was an introduction to the schools and further projects are planned as the club seeks to deepen the ties with the schools after the initial contact. This was definitely a weekend well spent in serving humanity and forming new friendships and partnerships. 21

26 Rotary Club of Constructs an Ablution Block at Iruri Primary School The students made dramatised presentations for the Rotarians, impressing them with their singing and acting talents. The commissioning of the ablution block then commenced with a lot of singing and applauding from the community present. Rotary Club of Nyeri partnered wi th the Rotary Club of Elk Grove, California in building an ablution The block at Iruri Primary School in Karatina, Nyeri County. The project was funded by a global grant worth 40,000. The project was official handed over to the school by the two Rotary Clubs and the Contractor on 2nd September, The group arrived at the school at 10am and were received by elated children, parents and teachers. Also present were AG for Eastern region Judith, Past AG Dickson Mugendi RC Meru, Rotarian Fr. Gikunda -President RC Meru, Rotarian Muchai RC Kirinyaga and Rotarian Carol Penelope RC Mashariki. The students made dramatised presentations for the Rotarians, impressing them with their singing and acting talents. Rotarian Catherine Survillas of Rotary Club of Elk Grove and founder at Iruri primary Schools; Sharing a Vision Organization took the opportunity to cut the ribbon with President Phillipa Ajulu of Rotary Club of Nyeri. It was a happy moment as Rotarians and the community witnessed the culmination of a dream. The students were very excited, expressing their joy at having better facilities for their use. One of the young students thanked Rotarians for improving their lives and for making learning at the school much more comfortable. Through this programme the two Rotary Clubs hope that sanitation at the school has improved and that the students will register better performance in their studies. 26

27 Rotary101 The Rotary Club of Nairobi East membership Committee on 16th Sept held a Rotary 101 which its soul objectives is to provide a solid first step for new Rotarians as they enter the world of Rotary and re-introduction to Rotary of new members and those who have been away for a time. The guest got learn about the club projects and how to get involved. The fundraising initiatives and the obligations of being a Rotarian. The overall Rotary 101 program is fluid; new Rotarians can join anytime. The only cost is the cost of spending time with others and developing acquaintances. 28 RC KARENGATA MARA Water Project: I see Masai development Initiative By: Rotarian; Dan Munyori Onyango, Projects Director The Presidential Theme, is what is driving RC Karengata this year; Making a Difference We are out to improve sanitation, provide safe clean water for the population as well as train community leaders in the Maasai Mara region of Narok County. Rotarians are known to do exploits, rightly said they are like Doctors without borders. On 20th July 2017, six Rotarians from the RC of 28

29 RC KARENGATA Karengata set off to a destination named Ordapoi within Mara conservancy covering over 500kms of return trip. This was not a tour to see the wilde beast migration, but a visit to carry out a pre-implementation project viability assessment for water and sanitation. The team comprised of: President Esther Maindi; PP- Dan Onyango, Project Director; PP-Fam Boit, Family of Rotary; Rtn. Rosalind Gatobu, Club Membership & Development; Rtn. Emily Mulaya and Rtn. Jane Katuga. An early chilling morning journey transversing three counties of Nairobi, Nakuru and Narok came to an end in Ordapoi Conservancy in the Mara at about 3pm. This was the Camp where we find the Masai Development Initiative offices, the team that co-ordinates the community affairs and ensures projects effectiveness. The bumpy road from Narok town off into the Conservancy did not deter our resilience and confidence. At the back of our mind was the call of the Rotary motto, Service Above Self. Our focus was to ensure that our visit eventually culminates into enabling the communities in Enshapai to be adequately supplied with clean water and acquire wash rooms and toilets that promote and enhance humanity. This is not the first of this kind of Project for RC Karengata. Last year, a similar Project, 538 was undertaken at Oloitoktok at the far end of the Kenya-Tanzania border. This was executed within time and commissioned. The Project is up and running and is serving over 3000 members of the community. The Ordapoi Project is being funded by RF under the global grant arrangements through our Primary sponsor of RC of Irvine California in the USA. It will involve harnessing water from the springs, building an underground tank of 50,000 liters and an overhead tank of similar capacity that would distribute water by gravity to villages and schools, 7kms downstream. Water kiosks and bathrooms shall be built to cater for the villagers and cattle troughs and key spots for the animals. Estimated value of the Project is Kshs: 7.2 million. Toyotas were first introduced to Kenya in 1964 when Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) opened a representative s office and appointed Westlands Motors (WM) as its distributor.... In 1999 TTC established Toyota East Africa Ltd as a joint venture with Lonrho Motors, which then took over the distribution of Toyotas. TTC, a member of the Toyota Group, one of the world s leading motor vehicle manufacturers, took the strategic decision to enhance its dominant presence within Kenya by buying out Lonrho at the distributor level and followed it up with the purchase of the Lonrho Motors East Africa Dealerships in Nairobi and Mombasa. Toyota s subsidiary, TKEN thus became the sole appointed distributor for Toyota vehicles in Kenya. Toyota Kenya is fully owned by Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) which is the trading arm of Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota Motor Corporation is now the largest automaker in the world, and the Global market leader both in technological innovation and global sales of motor vehicles. The Toyota Foundation is a grant-making foundation established in 1974 by the Toyota Motor Corporation. The Foundation views events from a global perspective as it works to support activities that bring broad, long-term benefits to society. It identifies issues in a wide range of areas in line with the needs of the times, including human and natural environments, social welfare, and education and culture, and provides grants for research and projects that address these issues. It was also astonishing to note that Toyota has diversified its operations ranging from Geothermal plant construction in Kenya, Acquiring the biggest pharmaceutical company in Africa which is I north Africa to constructing a modern Heineken brewery in west Africa among other 54 major investments in Africa. After the tour we had a brief meeting to thank Toyota Kenya for their continuity support to RCNE activities and especially project visits among others and also The President of Rotary Club of Hurlingam thanked Toyota Kenya for their support especially logistical support during the sunshine rally which is an annual event held at Jamuhuri park. 31
