1 Whippany Park High School Guidance Department 2017 LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS Dear Class of 2017, March 2017 Attached, please find the application form for the various LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS. This entire packet is also available on line at through the Guidance web page under Scholarships. Seniors seeking any of the listed scholarships must submit the appropriate applications to the Guidance office unless noted. Incomplete or late forms will not be processed. Please make sure to be neat and to use pen when filling out the application. Be diligent in reviewing your answers for punctuation, grammar, and spelling. PLEASE NOTE: If you are applying for any of the following ELEVEN local scholarships on page 1 and 2 (LETTERS A through K), see Mr. Shore for a SEPARATE application form. Otherwise, follow the directions on page 3. The deadlines for SCHOLARSHIPS A through K vary. A. American Legion Auxiliary Unit #155 Nurses/Medical Scholarship - A senior who is a descendent of a U.S. veteran and is planning to major in nursing or pre-med. The merit of the award shall include financial need, scholarship, and character, and patriotism due April 5 th. A B. American Legion Auxiliary Unit #155 Nurses Scholarship (in memory of Ted Guerin) - A senior who is a descendent of a U.S. veteran and is planning to major in nursing only. The merit of the award shall include financial need, scholarship, character, and patriotism - due April 5 th. A separate application is available in Guidance. C. American Legion Post 155 Scholarship- A senior of high academic standing who is a descendent of a veteran. The recipient must plan on attending college after graduation - due April 5 th. A D. Atlantic Health Systems Blood Donor Services Scholarship- A senior who has given blood or attempted to give blood through this year s Atlantic Health sponsored blood drive at Whippany Park High School, or at any point in the past twelve months. Additionally, applicants must have a 2.5 GPA or greater and be enrolled in a higher education institution by August Recipients will be chosen at random from pool of applicants once they meet the specified criteria. Cedar Knolls Fire Company Scholarship - A senior planning to attend an institution of higher learning and who has displayed excellence in volunteer activities, academics, and community affairs - due April 5 th. A 1

Hanover Soccer Club Scholarship- A senior who has participated in Hanover Soccer Club In-Town or Travel soccer program for at least 3 years prior to entering high school, has a 2.5 GPA or better, has played soccer during senior year on the high school team, and will plan to attend a 2 or fouryear college or post high school vocational school. Emphasis will be placed on GPA, community and school activities, service to HSC, and brief essay - due April 5 th. A separate application is available in Guidance. G. Hanover Township Little League Diana DeCrescenzo Memorial Scholarship- A senior who has at least a 2.5 GPA who participated in Hanover Township Little League program for at least three years prior to entering high school. Applicants must be attending a 2 or 4 year college, and have played at least two years of softball or baseball, including senior year, on the high school team. Emphasis will be placed on GPA, community and school activities, sportsmanship and service to HTLL, and a brief statement on why receiving this scholarship would be important to you- due April 5 th. A H. Jay Faccenda Memorial Scholarship- A senior enrolled in the instrumental music program who is of reputable character. Also, music-related activities and extra-curricular activities will be examined. A separate application and deadline information is available from Mr. Sabatino. Completed applications should be submitted to Mr. Sabatino. I. Ralph Politi Jr. Memorial Foundation Scholarship- A senior who has been involved in both community service and extracurricular activities and has at least a C average. Applicants must be attending either a 2 or 4 year college or a vocational/technical school - due April 5 th. J. Rotary Vocational Scholarship- A senior planning to attend a vocational school or 2-year college. Also, summer work experience and family income will be considered - due April 5 th. A K. Whippany Park Music Boosters, Inc. Scholarship- A senior involved in the band or flag program. 3 Name: (Last Name) (First Name) 2017 LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS DUE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5 TH DIRECTIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS #1-25: Circle the numbers corresponding to the scholarships you are interested in. Then complete the attached local scholarship application and return all pages of this packet (except for page 1 and 2) to Guidance. In addition to the three questions listed on the application, some scholarship organizations have required essays. When submitting additional essays required by specific scholarships, label each essay with your name, title of the essay, and the name of the scholarship. Be sure to attach all necessary essays to your local scholarship application. REMEMBER: Be neat, and make sure to check your answers for spelling and punctuation. The deadline for SCHOLARSHIPS #1-25 is April 5 th 1. Brian M. Cortright Memorial Scholarship A senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA, who has lettered in at least one varsity sport and who is planning to continue his/her educational path at the collegiate level. The candidate must be an active participant in WPHS sponsored programs, and must have aspirations to pursue a career in law enforcement, pre-law or criminal justice. Required 500 word essay: Describe your accomplishments and why you deserve this scholarship based on its criteria. 2. David DelloRusso Hanover Township Youth Football & Cheerleading Scholarship A senior boy or girl who will attend a two or four-year college and has played football or cheered for the HTYFC and continued for WPHS. Required essay: Why you feel you should receive this scholarship. 3. Donielle Maizys Memorial Scholarship Any senior who will be attending college, has financial need, and has overcome a major challenge in order to be successful. Required word essay: Provide an example of a personal achievement in which you have had to overcome a major challenge in order to be successful. 4. Dr. Leslie Ann Skurla Scholarship A senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA who will major in a health-related field. 5. East Hanover Italian American Club Scholarship A senior who has at least one parent of Italian heritage and strong academic standing. Applicants should be involved in co-curricular activities, community service, and/or part-time employment. Required 250 word essay: What role does your Italian heritage play in your daily life? 3

George Pin Chiao Wang Memorial Scholarship A graduating senior athlete who has a minimum GPA of 3.5 and who demonstrates (through both school and sports) pride, commitment, and dedication to the Whippany Park community - reminiscent of Whippany Park Class of 2001 graduate, George Wang. 7. Hanover Township Education Association Memorial Fund Scholarship A senior with at least a 3.0 GPA who plans to attend a four-year college and major in teaching. The candidate must show involvement in community service and volunteer activities. Required 500 word essay answering the question: Why do you want to become a teacher? 8. Hanover Township Education Foundation Scholarship A senior who plans to pursue a career in education/teaching and has at least a 3.0 GPA. The student must demonstrate involvement in school and/or community. 9. Hanover Township PTA Sharpe/Grossman Scholarship A senior with a "B" average ONLY who has attended either public or parochial school in Hanover Township and will attend a two or four-year college. The student must demonstrate positive character traits and school spirit. Financial need must be demonstrated. 10. Hanover Township Senior Citizens Scholarship A student who is planning on earning a two-year degree at a vocational or junior college. 11. Howard F. Gogel and Family Scholarship A senior with strong work ethic with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.7. Financial need must be demonstrated. 12. Kaitlyn Rose Okolita Memorial Scholarship A senior in good standing planning on attending a four-year college or university. 13. Keith E. Williams Scholarship Students who apply must be actively involved in athletics with at least a 2.5 GPA and be attending college in the fall. 14. Ken Carlson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Given to a senior who will be attending a four-year university or college, has a GPA of a "B" or better and participated in high school athletic programs (JV or varsity) or in music programs (band, orchestra, or own band). The winner cannot be a family member of any foundation member or the Carlson family. This includes cousins, nephews, and nieces. Required 300 word essay: How I plan to pursue my dream and to make a difference in my family, my life, my community or the world. 15. Knights of Columbus Scholarship A special education student with plans to further his/her education. 4
5 16. Lance Cpl. Christopher Cosgrove Memorial Scholarship A senior with a GPA who has an interest in history, athletics, and/or the military. He/she must plan on attending a 2-four-year college or university. Financial need must be demonstrated. 17. Lynn Hill Memorial Scholarship A senior who will be pursuing a career in either the pharmaceutical or science field with at least a 3.5 GPA. The recipient must participate in extra-curricular activities, volunteer their time out of school to benefit others, and demonstrate leadership qualities both inside and outside of school. 18. Memorial Junior School PTA Stephanie Bindas Scholarship A senior with a "B" average ONLY who attended Memorial Junior School. Applicant should be an all-around student demonstrating positive character traits as evidenced by participation in school and/or community sponsored activities. Applicants should also be involved in some sort of volunteer service. 19. Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation Scholarship A senior with at least a B average who is planning to major in a health science at a two or four-year college; need must be demonstrated. 20. Peer Buddies Scholarship A senior who has been highly involved with the Peer Buddies program. 21. Wayne Marino Memorial Scholarship A senior planning to attend an accredited college who demonstrates scholastic ability and financial need. 22. Wegmans Scholarship A senior with at least a 2.5 GPA who embodies the Wegmans values (making a difference in the community, empowerment, respect, caring, and high standards). 23. Whippany Fire Department Scholarship A senior planning to attend a four-year college or university, two-year college or a technical school. 24. Whippany Park SGA Phair Memorial Scholarship A senior planning to attend a four-year college who has been a member of the SGA and exerted a positive influence on his/her class. 25. Whippany Park SGA William Godshall Scholarship A senior planning to attend a technical school or two year college. 5
