1 October, 2016 Dear Scholarship Applicant, The Xi Eta Lambda Education and Economic Development (XELEED) Foundation would like to offer financial assistance, in the form of a one-time scholarship to a deserving high school male senior in celebration of their academic excellence and contributions to their school and community. Over the past ten years, the funds have been awarded to over fifty deserving students. Attached you will find a scholarship application which includes eligibility criteria and detailed instructions for completing the application package. Please note that testaments of character, financial need, and participation in extracurricular activities along with the completion of the essay question on page three of this application will all be considered as part of the applicant s academic performance. Please complete and submit the attached application by December 16 th, Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted. 2 David Keaton Seven Jewels Scholarship Program The mission of the Xi Eta Lambda Education and Economic Development Foundation has always been to uphold "manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind." The foundation seeks to make an impact on the community by providing programs for young men that instill character and integrity into their lives. The goal of the foundation is to support for these young men as they advance their education to become productive members of society. This year we are sponsoring seniors from Houston area high schools. To receive the scholarship, the students must attend a rigorous educational program, adhere to strict academic guidelines and show document evidence of their involvement in the community. The Xi Eta Lambda Educational Foundation has given scholarships over the past six years in excess of over $45,

3 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Please read all instructions carefully before completing this application. Provide answers to all requests for information. Do not leave any request space blank. If the request does not apply to you, please indicate by filling the space with NA. Failure to complete instructions could result in an unfavorable rating. I. Eligibility This scholarship award is open to any male graduating high school seniors that: 1. Lives within the Greater Houston area 2. Possesses a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on 4.0 scale 3. Demonstrate strong leadership skills 4. Has compiled a record of Community Service and Volunteer Activities 5. Graduating in Spring Enrolled in a four year undergraduate program, for upcoming fall semester II. Official Transcript and Current Resume Please provide an official transcript from your high school counselor or principal. Make sure it indicates the most current GPA and class ranking. Your high school counselor or principal must certify documentation in the appropriate space. III. Biography Please provide a 100 word (max) biography about yourself that includes your high school, GPA, extracurricular activities, high school accomplishments, community service, college you plan to attend, major and why you picked this major. At the end of your biography, provide your favorite quote from a person you admire. IV. Recommendation Form Please provide two (2) recommendations. Give the attached recommendation forms to one Teacher and one Faculty Member (i.e. Counselor, Principal, etc ). Family members are ineligible. V. Essay Topic: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the world s oldest historically African American male intercollegiate fraternity, and as such we are concerned with the low academic achievement amongst African American male students and the I, ME AND MY attitude amongst young men. Please prepare a concise, wellwritten essay (not over 500 words double-spaced) addressing the following topic: Lifting as We Climb Note: This should be one essay. It should be creative in point of view, style and writing technique. Essays will also be judged on grammatical structure. People take this to mean various things, what is your take on the motto and what would you do to ensure you exemplify the motto. VI. Deadline All application packets must be postmarked by Friday, December 16th, Applicants must submit completed application packets. Incomplete application packets will NOT be reviewed and will therefore eliminate you from the selection process.

Scholarship Recipients Applicants selected to receive this scholarship will be notified no later than January 31, Each recipient is expected to attend three seminars that are given by business leaders throughout the Greater Houston Area. Missing seminars without prior communication with Mr. Welborn Williams could result in forfeiting of any scholarship awards. IX.
