1 NCAHQ Newsletter July 2018 Message from the Board By definition, dedication is the feeling or demonstration of strong support for or loyalty to a person, group, or cause and a volunteer is someone who freely offers to participate in or work for an organization without compensation. NCAHQ is extremely fortunate to have a number of dedicated volunteers in our organization who are passionate about healthcare quality. This dedication and passion has been most recently demonstrated through the successful presentation of our annual education conference held on April 9th and 10th at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham, NC. The theme this year encompassed using fresh approaches to driving quality improvement through methodology, strategy, and tools. Over two days, 13 speakers presented on a variety of topics ranging from use and impact of social media, care redesign, project management, rapid improvement events, valuebased care, and healthcare reform. Presenters also provided valuable information on how to achieve joy and resilience in the workplace and how to maximize productivity. Over 150 conference attendees also benefitted from 23 poster presentations on a wide range of healthcare improvements instituted at hospitals and other care delivery sites throughout our state. Vendors from 13 organizations participated as well to demonstrate their products and services to attendees ranging from patient care to clinician support. Work began in May 2017 to ensure the venue, educational topics, speakers, vendors, and poster presenters selected provided an optimum learning and networking experience for our members and attendees. It was truly my pleasure to work with such an engaged and hardworking group of individuals and I cannot thank everyone enough for sharing their energy, passion, and time to make this conference as special as it was. The conference planning team is getting ready to kick off planning for the 2019 conference. 4 Congratulations to Our Members! New CPHQs We know there are a lot of new CPHQs in our state. In the past, NAHQ provided a list of all New CPHQs. The NAHQ has changed their processes and now only lists the active CPHQs instead of the list of New CPHQs. This was a great highlight in our newsletter which we will not be able to provide moving forward. Member Accomplishments Please utilize this link to share your professional accomplishments in 2018 and to be acknowledged for your hard work in our upcoming newsletters Member Spotlight Cyndi Hall, MHA, CPHQ Current Quality Position Cyndi currently serves UNC REX Healthcare as the Director of Care Redesign. This is a new and emerging field in healthcare that encompasses Quality, Performance Improvement, and Costs, while improving the Patient Experience it truly reflects all parts of IHI s Triple Aim. As part of her responsibilities, Cyndi supports the system s Next Generation Accountable Care Organization and tries to design tight handoffs during transitions of care for this population. Also, she is currently participating in the NCHA s Pneumonia Knockout Campaign and trying to design systems in the inpatient environment to improve UNC Rex s vaccination rates. Cyndi has the joy of working with two Health Care Management interns and raising them up in the Quality culture! Background Cyndi started her journey in healthcare quality during the 1990 s when she graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a Master of Healthcare Administration. Her focus during her studies was on both Finance and Quality. Since then she s worked across North Carolina on both the payer side, for United Healthcare Group, as well as the provider side including New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Carolinas Healthcare System now Atrium Health. NCAHQ membership duration and/or committee involvement Cyndi has served on the NCAHQ education committee. She was pleased to earn her CPHQ designation in 2012 and intends to keep acquiring CEUs through attendance at the yearly NC conferences as well as monthly educational webinars. Personal Cyndi has spent much of her recent career advocating for more plain language and transparency in healthcare. You can listen to her interview with Helen Osborne in the Health Literacy Out Loud Pod Cast #155 Thinking Big About Health Literacy. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her family, her retired therapy dog Mia, and a hopefully abundant vegetable garden. 4
