2 Aloha and Welcome to the 10th International Bioethics Conference presented by The St. Francis International Center for Caring for Our Kūpuna: Balancing Human Dignity and Economics Confronting the Challenges of Our Kūpuna (Elders) Hawaii has a world-wide reputation for being the land of beautiful beaches, clean air, sunshine and pure water. The Islands healthful environment may be a contributing factor to the state being blessed with one of the fastest growing older adult populations in the nation. Yet, living longer on a fixed income with chronic conditions and diseases presents unique challenges. Increasingly, as people live longer, many realize they cannot rely on their children to tend to their physical and financial needs as they approach their twilight years. In many cases, their adult children are supporting their own children, and in some cases, they are beginning to develop physical or financial challenges of their own. This conference will probe for solutions and share best practices from home and abroad. Join us as we explore topics such as: Intergenerational Ethics: Should Children be Forced to Support their Elderly Parents The Singapore Model, Medicare Apocalypse, and a panel discussion on What would Granny Want? Respecting the Patient s Wishes. Significance of the Conference Date This event is being held on August 9, the death anniversary of Mother Marianne Cope, foundress of St. Francis Healthcare System, who was canonized by the Vatican on October 21, St. Marianne restored dignity to those torn from their families and stripped of their rights due to the social stigma associated with Hansen s Disease. St. Francis Healthcare System carries on the legacy of St. Marianne today, bringing hope to the underserved and marginalized, inspired by the mission to create healthy communities in Hawaii. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to: 1) Gain a historical perspective of how cultures and societies provided healthcare to marginalized individuals 2) Analyze whether there is a way to improve existing payment systems for the medical expenses of the elderly based on the Singapore Model 3) Compare real-life dilemmas in Hawaii and Singapore in carrying out the wishes of the elderly for medical treatment when they are unable to speak for themselves 4) Evaluate ongoing financial viability of long-term care insurance 5) Apply knowledge of what agencies and programs in Hawaii do to ensure non-institutional elderly receive appropriate access to food, shelter, and medical care 6) Understand the rationale for the growing acceptance of physician-assisted suicide Continuing Education Credits For Physicians: St. Francis Healthcare System is accredited by the Hawaii Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. St. Francis Healthcare System designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Dr. Chin is a member of the National Medical Ethics Committee and Course Director for the Advanced Specialty Training (AST) Course on medical ethics, professionalism and health law. At the Singapore Medical Association (SMA), he serves as Executive Director of the Centre for Medical Ethics and Professionalism, and is Chairperson of the SMA Ethics Committee. Faith Fitzgerald, MD, FACC, MACP Professor of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean of Humanities and Bioethics, University of California, Davis, School of Medicine; Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Editorial Board of The Pharos; Director, University of California Medical Humanities Consortium. Dr. Fitzgerald became an internist because of the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of complex diseases. She also enjoys having the opportunity to talk with and listen to men and women from all different walks of life. Her philosophy of care centers on applying rigorous thought and the knowledge of both medicine and the human experience to making people feel better and fulfill their full potential. She believes a lot of good health is good luck -- economic, social and genetic. Dr. Fitzgerald likes helping the unlucky. Timothy T. Taylor, M.Econ Originating managing editor, Journal of Economic Perspectives published by the American Economic Association. Lecturer for economics courses recorded for The Teaching Company, Chantilly, Virginia. Professor Taylor published the second edition of his Principles of Economics textbook, designed for colleges and universities. He also was a participant in the Stanford Workshop for High School Teachers of Economics (one-week workshop) and the Development Editor of the Hamilton Project, based at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

The Ethics Center serves as a resource for caregivers and scholars. The Ethics Center offers expertise and services in healthcare ethics consultations, education, research, and policy development. It provides a forum for scholarly dialogue and reflection of healthcare ethics and related issues for the Catholic community and community at large. The Ethics Center offers advice and assistance on difficult cases encountered by hospital ethics committees regarding patient care and organizational ethics. It also provides seminars for physicians, nurses, social workers and other healthcare workers in the community. These one-hour programs are designed to provoke dialog among the attendees. The Ethics Center interacts actively with local, national and international centers of bioethics. Its library of texts, journals as well as video and audio tapes provides basic information for the study of contemporary and multi-cultural ethical issues. The Ethics Center appoints the Fellows by invitation, who serve for two years, collaborating with visiting scholars, presenting community educational sessions, conducting research for publication, and supervising trainees in Ethics Center activities. They meet monthly to review and analyze the latest literature in healthcare ethics and related issues. Scholarly debate over controversial issues highlights their lively discussions.
