5 COURSE LEARNING GOALS The 40th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology and Neurology provides a timely and practical update for primary healthcare providers: nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physicians. The program addresses both acute and long-term evaluation and management, emphasizing interactive workshops on clinical skills. Case-based presentations will include our all-new Harvey, the Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator. Abstracts, presentation handouts, and self-assessment questions are provided on all topics. At the conclusion of the course the participants should be able to: 1) Identify the most essential heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds. 2) Outline the diagnosis and management of patients with heart failure including the indications for cardiac transplantation. 3) Describe metabolic risk factors and their management. 4) Outline the latest advances in pulmonary hypertension. 5) Describe the rationale and steps for cardiocerebral resuscitation. 6) Identify and manage the most important electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities. 7) Outline the indications and describe the approach to the screening neurologic examination. 8) Outline the indications for neurophysiology and neuroradiology testing in outpatients with neurologic conditions. 9) Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of patients with dizziness and falls. 10) Outline and describe the evaluation of a patient with memory loss. The Michael S. Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education (GCRME) was established 40 years ago and is a designated Center of Excellence of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. We have recently established the Joan K. Stout R.N. Nurses Training Program at our new 34,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility. We are offering a variety of courses for nurses continuing education. The teaching systems developed at the GCRME are used at over 850 medical centers and agencies worldwide. Harvey and our UMedic Computer Curricula train thousands of learners per year worldwide. Our emergency skills programs trained over 15,000 course registrants in the past year in cardiology, stroke, airway, pediatrics, trauma, antiterrorism and disaster response. The paramedics we train care for millions of Floridians. We also train the U.S. Army s Forward Surgical Teams prior to their frontline deployment. We welcome your entry into our teaching programs.
