1 1-A SECOND Caring Connections in Doctoral Education: Embracing the Magic Along the Way Cynthia J. Brown DNS, RN, AHN-BC has been a registered nurse for 35 years. She has experience in many areas of nursing, most recently; hospice care, nursing education, and research. She has completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in complementary therapies at the University of Virginia and is currently teaching in a nursing program based on quality caring science at the University of West Georgia. Priscilla Dunson Bartolone, DNS, RN Judith Drumm DNS, RN, CPN is a nurse educator specializing in Pediatric Nursing. She has been a nurse educator for over 20 years. She is currently an Associate Professor of Nursing at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, FL where she has been teaching for the past 8 years. Laureen M. Fleck, PhD, FNP-BC, CDE Debra Hain, PhD, APRN, ANP, GNP-BC is an Assistant Professor at Florida Atlantic University, Christine E Lynn College of Nursing and continues to practice in nephrology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Her research interests are implementation of strategies to reduce 30-day rehospitalizations in community residing older adults. Florence Keane, DNSc, MBA, MSN, PMHNP, ANP-C is an assistant professor of nursing at Florida International University. She is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University. Her research is in the area of gerontological nursing and caring for minorities especially those with mental illness. One of the courses she teaches at the graduate level is nursing theories with an emphasis on caring theories. M. Christopher Saslo, DNS, ARNP-BC, FAANP is the Associate Chief Nurse for CLinical Practice at the WEst Palm Beach VA Medical Center and a practicing nurse practitioner in the community in which he lives. He has been a nurse for more than 25 years and continues to evolve his nursing career as he learns about himself, peers and the patients whom we care for. Georgann V. Weissman DNP, ARNP, CNE has been involved in academia and clinical practice for the past 43 years. The caring philosophy has extended into her practice of geriatrics with a focus on end of life concerns, and the communication skills of nursing students as they establish relationships and goals with the dying patient. Although this work is challenging the rewards to the patient and the student cannot be understated. Marilyn A. Ray, RN, PhD, CTN-A is a charter member of the International Association for Human Caring, and a Board Member, She is a nursing theorist advancing the Theory of Bureaucratic Caring. She has published the books, Transcultural caring dynamics in nursing and health care; and with Dr. Marian Turkel, Nursing, Caring, and Complexity Science: For Human-Environment Well-Being. She has been engaged in teaching, mentorship, research on organizational culture and the economics of caring and other structural components of organizational caring. She is widely published, and presents nationally and internationally on caring science and the art of caring practice in complex organizations. She mentors students, faculty and administrators at all levels of caring science scholarship and practice.

8 CARING We met as strangers, yet as we took the time to examine our consciences, It was inevitable that we would have no problem accepting each other. The synergy was so strong and the atmosphere was so nurturing. Almost immediately we formed a cohesive connection. Through caring for self and caring for each other we were able to find serenity and joy, It was like magic. 7
