2 6th Annual Diabetes Management Upgrade your Clinical Toolbox Who Should Attend Purpose This course is designed for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, social workers and diabetes educators. Diabetes is a major public health problem. Currently, an estimated 25.8 million Americans have diabetes and 79 million have pre-diabetes. It is estimated that the number of Texans with diabetes will QUADRUPLE by This conference will provide updates on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, new insulin therapies and delivery devices. A review of oral medications for diabetes, as well as diabetes technologies including self-monitoring of blood glucose and continuous glucose monitoring will be presented. Clinicians participating in this conference will improve their clinical skills by learning techniques to motivate patients, resulting in improved biochemical outcomes and patient quality of life. Educational Objectives Credit Designation Accreditation Upon completion of this symposium, the participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies (Medical Knowledge and Patient Care) and be able to: Describe current research on the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes Utilize effective educational strategies to assist patients who are disabled by diabetic retinopathy to become independent in diabetes self-care and functional in daily living, thereby improving quality of life Describe an effective medical nutrition therapy program for patients with diabetes Explain the use of newer devices used in the management of diabetes including glucose monitoring, insulin pens and pumps Describe and compare new and traditional oral and injectable anti-hyperglycemic agents Describe at least one way to apply motivational interviewing techniques to empower patients in their efforts to live well and manage their diabetes The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This knowledge-based continuing professional education program ( L01-P) provides 7.5 contact hours (0.75 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education. She is co-author of seven books: Becoming Raw, Becoming Vegan, Becoming Vegetarian, The New Becoming Vegetarian, The Raw Food Revolution Diet, Defeating Diabetes and Dairy-free and Delicious, and contributing author to an eighth book, The Complete Vegetarian. Brenda is also author of numerous professional and lay articles. Brenda is the lead dietitian in a diabetes intervention project in Majuro, Marshall Islands. She is a past chair of the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association. Brenda lives in Kelowna British Columbia with her husband, and has two grown children.
