1 American Association of Critical Care Nurses - Northwest Chicago Area Chapter P.O. Box Arlington Heights, IL Website: nwchicagoaacn.org PRESIDENTS MESSAGE This is my last article until after summer. I have had writers block so please forgive me if this seems very disjointed or spewing with flight of ideas. Our theme for the year was It Matters. It is a theme that not only pertains to our work life, but also to our personal lives. Throughout the year, I have tried to depict scenarios or situations hoping to help you see that It Matters on a daily basis. As I sit in front of my computer, there are two stories that are on my mind that I would like to mention. I think they are stories that will stir something up inside you. I realize that there are varying opinions and sides to every story. However, the bottom line is IT whatever that may be, does matter. Our opinions matter. Our thoughts matter. Our stories matter. I think we are all aware of the recent incident of the hostage situation involving two nurses at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. I am sure all of you had this feeling of being punched in the stomach when you heard the story. As of 5/25/2017, further details came out about that horrifying time. Those details are important but what you need to remember is that we, as nurses, are all at risk regardless of your position. What matters most is that we need to be aware of our environment and situation we are in at all times. We need to stay safe when caring for our patients. That's what matters. With that in mind, our chapter has decided to provide an awareness class and maybe some tips on protecting ourselves during the beginning of our session. More details to come so please look out for that. Another incident I'd like to share is about a lesbian couple in New York that were in a heated custody battle over an adopted child. If you are interested in the story it was published in the New Yorker entitled What makes a parent. I personally think the article could've been written better but that's not the point. I'm not going to get political or make this a controversial discussion. So what! This story affected me because it involved a child. Take all the complexities out of the story and see this as a story of a child being fought over. That is what matters. This years theme made me step back during certain situations to either go full force
2 with what I believed or back off reminding me what mattered at the time. We all do this probably on a daily basis but to bring out the importance of our opinions and thoughts is a reminder that WE matter. To close, I want to acknowledge our chapter members. Thank you for your loyalty and interest in educating and caring for yourselves and for your patients. I also want to acknowledge the people on the Board of Directors: Julie, Rosie, Linda, RoseMary, Kathy, Leslie, Jodi, Kirsten, Judy, Alex and the MWC committee. You have been an incredible group to work with and have made the year the success that it is. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Rest up over the summer and enjoy your families. And don't forget that YOU MAT- TER! Cynthia Bender, APN-CNP President NWCAC-AACN *************************************************************************************** 2017 Midwest Conference It was great to see so many at the 2017 Midwest Conference! Thanks to all of you who attended! A special thanks to the committee members who worked so hard to put the conference together we could not have done it without you! Each one matters! Again, we had a record number of nurses attend the 2-day conference. For both days, we had 413 attend. On Thursday, 296 attended and on Friday we had 351 attend. Our terrific keynote speaker for the first day was AACN s 2017 President, Clareen Wiencek who spoke on her theme, We Are Nurses and It Matters! Everything we do, every day, matters to our patients, their families, our colleagues, and most of all, to our profession. On the second day, Dave Hanson, past AACN President (2008) and past NWCAC member, delivered a powerful session on Continual, Non-Stop, Unrelenting, Constant, Never-Ending Change: Survival Strategies for Nurses! We are grateful for those who attended and for all the terrific speakers! Please save the date for the 2018 Midwest Conference on March 26 and 27, We will again have the conference at the same location Eaglewood Resort and Spa, Itasca, IL. The 2018 AACN President, Christine Schulman, will be the Keynote Speaker on Monday 3/26/18 and present her theme, Guided by Why. This is especially meaningful to us as nurses, because WHY, a simple three letter word, guides our professional and personal compass! Please join us for the 2018 Midwest Conference on March 26 and 27, Linda Smith, RN, MSN, CCRN and Judy Giovannelli, RN MSN CCRN PCCN FACCN 2017 Midwest Conference Co-Chairs Chairs 2
3 Awards and Scholarships If you have participated in NWCAC activities the past year, it s time to get recognized because IT MATTERS!! All the work of the chapter is on a volunteer basis and NWCAC feels it is important to recognize those members that have contributed their time and expertise to the success of the chapter. The Awards and Scholarship Program has been re-established to do just that. Please go to our website: and click on the Document/ Resources tab for specific information regarding our Awards and Scholarship Program as well as the forms that need to be submitted for point accumulation and reimbursement. Completed forms need to be submitted June 2017 for re-imbursement this fiscal year. You may also carry over points for one year if you were not able to use them for conferences or educational material. You may bring your forms to the meeting on June 10 th or send them electronically to me. My address for questions or submissions is lcollins-rn@sbcglobal.net.
