Department (Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology and Virology) Grade depends on experience Anatomical Pathologists Locations: UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN/GROOTE SCHUUR TERTIARY (REF: WNCGSH 0717 Anatpath) Main Purpose of the Job To provide service delivery, undergraduate and post-graduate training and to undertake research to assist clinicians in patient management, to build capacity within the field and to build knowledge within the field. To perform, interpret report on and authorise a full range of laboratory tests and autopsies with the specified turnaround times. To guide clinicians (including internal and external customers) in the selection and interpretation of laboratory tests to optimize patient care, including the provision of an after-hours service. To participate in regular clinicopathological meetings with clinicians from various clinical specialties To establish, maintain and accept overall responsibility for a quality assurance program in order to maintain SANAS accreditation. To provide formal teaching and training to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as medical technologists in order to impart knowledge, teach skills and assess competence. To provide theoretical and practical training to post-graduate students to build capacity in the field. To participate in outreach programs to educate and empower professional peers and clinicians. To undertake research projects in their own right to add to the body of scientific knowledge and to fulfil the university research requirements. To diagnose and treat patients with chemical pathology disorders who are referred to the clinic i.e. Endocrine clinic, Diabetic clinic etc. To provide a specialised comprehensive clinic care service in order to cater for patients with a rare disorder i.e. Endocrine Clinic, Diabetic Clinic, Intersex Clinic, Myeloma Clinic. To establish, maintain and accept overall responsibility for a quality assurance program in order to maintain SANAS accreditation. To manage a subcomponent of an academic laboratory. To participate in outreach programs To provide informal training to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as medical technologists in order to impart knowledge, teach skills and assess competence. To provide formal training in the form of developing curricula, preparing lectures and assessing competence of undergraduate medical students. Receives, labels and sorts specimens for testing according to the SOP s Captures patient s information into the system Creates shipping lists of samples for distributions to laboratories Administers the distribution of samples to ensure smooth channelling of specimens to various disciplines. Responsible for appropriate packaging, recording and monitoring of all out-going referral specimens Keeps specimens request forms for audit purposes. 13 WESTERN AND NORTHERN CAPE REGION TYGERBERG LABORATORY SUPPORT SERVICE TYGERBERG HOSPITAL ASSISTANT TECHNICIAL B2 REFERENCE NUMBER: COATYG0717/ ( ) Assist with the preparation of culture media, dispense, label, pack and distribute different culture media to relevant departments in terms of defined processes and procedures Capture Oracle orders, prepare, dispatch and arrange collection / delivery of media orders in order to meet NHLS or client clinical requirements Operate laboratory equipment and perform routine technical maintenance on laboratory equipment and prepare for quality assurance on all products by a qualified, registered supervisor to obtain maximised outcomes Maintain and sterilize all equipment and re-usable components to ensure that health and safety standards are adhered to Check stock levels and participate in weekly/monthly stock-takes and report any problems to Supervisor to ensure operational and quality standards are adhered to at all times Perform all tasks in accordance with the Safety and Good Housekeeping regulations of the OHS Act and the NHLS prescribed procedures Participate in the teaching and training conducted within the laboratory to ensure that a high standard of laboratory service is delivered. To apply sound phlebotomy practices to ensure the safety and comfort of patients. To conduct pre- and post-testing counseling (with informed consent) in order to provide complete patient care.
