4 Why Mental Health & Wellbeing? Stress, anxiety, depression consistently in our top 5 reasons for sickness absence. Mental ill health common experience in health service. Patient experience -- depends upon staff experience. Shift from focus on illness to wellbeing.
5 Benefits of training It enabled me to efficiently and sensitively manage a situation where a member of staff was off on long term absence due to workplace stress. The workshop gave me confidence and reassurance that I was managing with the situation correctly. When the member of staff returned to the workplace they thanked me for the way I had managed the situation and supported them through a difficult time. What I learned from the training programme was how to face up to the areas in my job (and in my personal life) which have been causing me the most stress. I then broke them down into components in order to isolate the key triggers and then reflected on how to deal with the core issues. This has resulted in a dramatic improvement in how I cope with my job and personal life and I no longer feel overwhelmed.

7 What helped us make progress Embedding mental health as a core component of health and wellbeing policy & strategy. Equality outcomes. See Me: tackling stigma. Active health promotion group. Involving managers and staff in responding to change.
8 Sharing our learning Make the programme relevant for you. Think about who will become a trainer and what support they will need. Training managers is important, but don t forget staff. Embed mental health and wellbeing in wider initiatives team development, change management, health & safety.
9 Where are we now? Stress/anxiety is still one of our top five reasons for sickness absence, however hours lost due to stress and anxiety has fallen by 50% over the course of 2013/14 despite significant organisational change.
