1 ONCOLOGY NURSING SOCIETY BREAST CARE SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP MEETING MINUTES APPROVED DATE: Thursday, May 13, 2010 PLACE: San Diego, CA, San Diego Convention Center, Room 4 TIME: 2 PM (PT) 3:30 PM (PT) RECORDER: Julia Whiteker ATTENDEES: (List of attendees attached) I. Welcome/Introductions SIG Coordinator, Mary Scheid, RN, MSN, OCN, introduced Jean Rosniak chair of ONS nominating committee. Jean encouraged involvement in ONS and suggested many ways to get involved including writing for the SIG newsletter and running for elected office. II. III. State of the SIG M. Scheid reported on the state of the BRC SIG. 900 plus members 2009 minutes of the SIG meeting approved by membership SIG survey results: More networking needed, working on creating more networking opportunities Membership is very well educated Work in a variety of settings-encouraged reaching out to our inpatient colleagues for SIG memberships Encouraged submission of presentation ideas Announcements/Recognitions M. Scheid recognized SIG leaders by presenting Certificates of Appreciation. Darcy Burbage ONC Pearl Moore Making a Difference Certification Champion for this year, asked to step forward. D. Burbage was the first coordinator of the Breast Care SIG and we wanted to congratulate her for this honor. Cynthia Brioli won the SIG newsletter award and her article on Partial Breast Irradiation is available on the BRC SIG Virtual Community. Elaine Sein will present on the Nursing Quality indicators for Breast Care on Saturday. Linda Eaton presented a study on coping skills for women with breast cancer. She is asking us to help with recruitment. More information for patients or nurses at She needs to recruit over a hundred women for the study from all over the country. The first raffle was performed and the winner was: Mary Roony (Taking Care of Your Girls-book).

Elaine Stein: ONS project team representing our SIG, developing patient centered nurse sensitive quality indicators for breast cancer, Diane Otte and Susan Beck (project team leader). She then discussed the development of the role of nurse navigator at her location and then the book that she and her navigators recently developed to help nurse navigators to start their own practice and develop their role: Breast Care Coordinators/Navigators orientation Manual. These books can be ordered - one was raffled to Becky McClelland
3 M. Scheid encouraged everyone to get certified as a CBCN. IV. Goals Advocacy: if you are not a member of ONS STAT, you should join. It is our voice in Congress. 10% increase is needed. Goal of more nurses from the SIG passing the CBCN certification. Partnership: coordinate a relationship with breast cancer entities. No one had objections to these goals and they passed as stated. Leadership succession: please consider becoming involved in the SIG. topic of interest for SIG membership: Pain management with core biopsies and SLN, and after the biopsy/bruising? V. SIG Needs Historian take and collect pictures and document. Yvonne Ward volunteered for this position. Guidelines for leadership: Newsletter Editor the editor wants to set some standards of minimum participation for editors accountability. Some of these were presented to the attendees and they agreed to the standards. Virtual Community wants to set some standards as well. These standards were agreed upon by the attendees. Y. Ward spoke about her involvement in fundraising for the Hope Lodge. She presented a video that she made about the Shave to Save event. M. Scheid showed a picture of a woman who paints her bald head and has turned this into a business. Amy Rettig shared about a patient who has developed a CD for healing they distribute to patients. She also described a quilting project. D. Burbage suggested using the discussion area on the Virtual Community for sharing clinical ideas and questions. This would promote collaboration and EBP. Someone talked about a post mastectomy painting project in her area. These could be posted as links on the BRC SIG Virtual Community. New Coordinator elect: Amy Rettig was introduced and she gave a short bio. VI. VII. Topic Submission Ideas Areas of interest to membership Institutes of Learning and Congress presentations. Need to have a round table format for informal interaction. Discussion
4 M. Scheid asked participants to discuss how they are tracking patients: Excel, exemplo, nurse navigator, and other programs. E. Sein discussed the expense of the programs and suggested discussing the possibility of their own IT program creating something like this. None of these commercial tracking systems are actually interfacing with any EMRs although they promise that this is possible. Discussed a possible collaboration with Breastcancer.org to do research on the discussion boards. C. Brioli said a few words about her award winning article. VIII.
