AWHONN s Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices Workshop (AFHMPP) $ :00 AM to Linda Christinsen-Rengel, BSN, RNC, Perinatal Outreach Coordinator, Fetal Monitoring Instructor Denise Palmer, MS, RN, Perinatal Outreach Manager, Fetal Monitoring Instructor Laura Senn, MS, RNC, Staff Nurse, Fetal Monitoring Instructor Nanette Vogel McCaa, BSN, RNC, Resource Educator, Fetal Monitoring Instructor Trainer The AWHONN AFHMPP Workshop is a one-day workshop (9.9 contact hours) focusing on the application of advanced fetal monitoring knowledge and skills in intrapartum nursing practice (contact hour credit includes independent study in preparation for the workshop). The content presented in this workshop builds on the essential knowledge and skills gained through the FHMPP (Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices) two-day workshop. The workshop uses a case study approach focusing on the analysis of FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring) patterns/characteristics and related case information. The workshop emphasizes underlying maternal-fetal physiology, instrumentation, interpretation, intervention and verbal and written communication skills. Successful completion of a written examination is required for completing the workshop and earning continuing education credit. Expected Level of the Learner: The AWHONN AFHMPP workshop is designed for registered nurses who have successfully completed the FHMPP two-day workshop, a comparable fetal heart monitoring workshop, and/or are certified in fetal heart monitoring. In order to facilitate successful completion of the AFHMPP Workshop, participants are expected to review AWHONN s Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices, Third Edition in advance of taking the course. 1. Synthesize the knowledge and skills from the FHMPP and the AFHMPP Workshop in the analysis of complex cases. 2. Demonstrate necessary decision making for the proper selection and verification of FHM techniques in complex cases. 3. Analyze complex FHM case-scenarios. 4. Correlate critical fetal heart rate patterns/characteristics with related maternal fetal physiology and indicated clinical interventions in complex cases. 5. Evaluate fetal-maternal response to interventions in complex cases. 6. Describe the role and responsibility of the professional nurse in the use of FHM in complex cases. 7. Communicate verbal and written data to verify accountability, legal responsibility, and risk management in complex cases. The course text will be sent to the participant as confirmation of course registration.

3 Labor Support Workshop $ :00 AM to Jeanette Schwartz, RNC, MA, ICCE, CD (DONA), Co-founder of J&M Birth Consultants, Doula Trainer, Clinical Manager, Maternity Care Center, Woodbury, MN Marilyn Hildreth, RN, CD (DONA), LCCE, FACCE, CLC, Co-founder of J&M Birth Consultants, Doula Trainer, Labor & Delivery Nurse, Brookings, SD The Labor Support Workshop will introduce the participant to labor support; evidence based practice; setting the stage; the three P s (Progress in labor, positions for second stage, postpartum follow-up); and role playing. Regardless of the culture or the century, women have always been there for each other at the birth of a baby. Health care professionals who offer support to a birthing woman can strengthen the moment that becomes a lasting bond between mother, child, and family. As health care providers and labor and delivery nurses learn the role of offering labor support to the birthing woman, satisfaction in their work drastically increases. When providers are confident in their labor skills, birthing families are able to focus on their birth experience and one another, leading to a higher level of satisfaction for the patient. You are at her side, supporting the expectant mother s decision for how she wants to experience childbirth. Whether she wants pharmacological assistance or wants to experience a natural childbirth, you are there to help her find the information she needs to make an informed decision. She then depends on you to support that decision. Eye to eye, breath to breath, heart to heart. 1. Demonstrate support techniques to reduce the discomfort of labor. 2. Explain two comfort measures to relieve back labor. 3. Demonstrate two positions for second stage of labor to enhance the descent of the baby. 4. List two warning signs of postpartum depression. S.T.A.B.L.E. Program $ :00 AM to This activity has been designed to meet the MN Board of Nursing continuing education requirements for 8 CH. ICEA credit is pending. 6 MORNING SESSION Critical Challenges in Caring for the Perinatal Patient - Judith Poole Caring for the perinatal patient becomes more challenging each and every day. This presentation will identify barriers to effective communication and teamwork in the perinatal unit and describe effective communication strategies. This session will present risk factors, nursing implications and management of common emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, hemorrhage, hypertensive crisis and eclampsia. NICHD terminology will also be introduced. Finally, components of a patient safety program for the perinatal unit will be outlined. Join Judy as she shares her own clinical experience giving you the knowledge you need to care for the critical challenges of the perinatal patient. Judith H. Poole, PhD, RNC, CNS Judy is currently a member of the AWHONN Board of Directors and is President Elect for AWHONN in Judy brings you clinical expertise and commitment to excellence surpassed by none. Author of numerous perinatal and critical care chapters and articles, Judy has published in Essentials of Maternity Nursing, Core Curriculum for Post Anesthesia Nursing Practice, Critical Care Nursing Clinics of North America, Maternity and Gynecologic Care, Clinical Issues in Perinatal and Women s Health Nursing, and MCN. Judy is a practicing clinician who specializes in high risk, emergency OB management. AFTERNOON SESSION From Wedding Rings to Nose Rings... Generational Differences Faith Roberts Why can't things stay the way they were? Why is it so difficult to attract and retain people who care? Where is the "work ethic" in today's healthcare providers? Today's generational differences have caught us all off guard. What skills will assist leaders/educators when working with this increasingly diverse workforce? One thing is for sure; if you don't plan on changing, don't plan on hiring! This presentation will highlight the heroes, stories, values and traditions of the four generational groups in the workforce today. The Power of Hope and Miracles...IT S IN EVERY ONE OF US Faith Roberts How can we treat patients well when we can t even be nice to each other? Motivating everyone to realize the IMPACT that they have on others is perplexing at best. Patients expect the care that they receive to be excellent and, too often, they are disappointed. Too often in health care the core value of competence is rewarded at the expense of an equally important value... caring. This talk will ask the participants to look at themselves as the patient ambassador and realize... it s in every one of us... to be wise. Faith Roberts, RNC, Community Parish Nurse Program Coordinator, Lecturer Currently the Parish Nurse Program Coordinator for Carle Foundation Hospital Faith draws on her extensive experiences in Administration, Education and Clinical Practice when giving presentations. Her unique ability to blend theory and reality make her presentations truly powerful and enjoyable. Her gift of storytelling captivates her audience to both the drama and humor found in nursing practice. We laugh and we cry as Faith shares her experiences and wisdom; we are forever touched by the gifts that are uniquely Faith. Faith s varied experiences as staff nurse educator and manager allow her to speak empathically to many audiences on many topics. Enjoy! A Complimentary Seated Massage will be available for every participant!
