1 Date: June 2013 Job Title : Registered Nurse Department : Inpatient Location : Pitman House, 50 Carrington Road, Pt Chevalier Reporting To : Manager s Direct Reports : Nil Functional Relationships with : Internal Community and Home s Parental Alcohol & Drug Services Clinicians from other Regional Alcohol & Drugs Services (RADS) External Purpose : To provide nursing care which is safe, of the highest possible quality and in accordance with the standards of practice and the RADS policy. KEY TASKS Provide nursing care to clients; assessment, discharge, formulation of care plans and provision of nursing interventions using knowledge and skills from nursing theory, physical and behavioural science. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Assess level of client s need for detoxification and medication. Demonstrate skill in withdrawal/stabilisation interventions and treatment planning. Incorporate a multi disciplinary approach and consumer/ significant other involvement in planning and decision making. Assist in planning for discharge using developed understanding of community resources and family/ social support systems. Initiatives and co-ordinates appropriate action in emergencies. Demonstrates expert clinical/ observational skills. Evaluates consumer responses to care planned and given and makes adjustments as necessary. 2 Communicates clearly. Interacts effectively with health care consumers, significant others and health team members within and outside the Unit. Undertakes teaching and learning activities with health care consumers, colleagues and students. Demonstrates effective management skills in nursing practice and within the healthcare team. Is able to develop a therapeutic relationship with consumers. Demonstrates knowledge of and implements bicultural health care. Is conversant with WDHB policy. Provides guidance to other staff in interactions with consumers who have special communication needs. As a key worker, facilitates discussion for allocated clients between the consumer, significant others and the health care team. Participates in multi disciplinary case conferences. Facilitates discussion of options and choices of interventions/treatments with consumers. Maintains appropriate professional standards. Assists in the development and attainment of the unit objectives. Critically reviews standards and policies and makes recommendations as necessary. Takes measures to prevent complications and emergencies, intervenes and evaluates care given. Seeks feedback regarding own performance and makes improvements needed. Demonstrates self-direction initiating learning opportunities. Provides feedback to Charge Nurse and Manager regarding quality issues within Unit. Notifies Charge Nurse of staffing deficits, monitors staff workload and sets priorities. Co-ordinates with health team members to assess individual consumer s progress and evaluate treatment approaches. Quality Contributes to quality initiatives. Sees to own professional development and supervision. Negotiates with Manager appropriate component of Core Business Training to be attended, and attends within negotiated time frame. 5 PERSON SPECIFICATION POSITION TITLE: Minimum Preferred Qualification NZ Registered Comprehensive Nurse. Applications also accepted from RPN, RGON. Able to demonstrate a high level of nursing competency and work relatively autonomously with minimal supervision. Experience Significant experience in alcohol and drug and mental health fields preferred. Good interpersonal skills essential. Good personal health and have a low absenteeism rate from the work place. Demonstrates a willingness and a commitment to understanding the implications for Maori health that are implicit in the Treaty of Waitangi. A willingness to support and participate in the Organisation s commitment to biculturalism. An ability to work as part of a regional alcohol and drugs service. Current driver s license. Skills/Knowledge/Behaviour Knowledge of biculturalism and consumer/whanau involvement. Demonstrates good relationship and communication skills.
