2 PNE171 MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING I I. CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION A. Prerequisites: PNE141, PNE143, PNE145, PNE148, PNE167, and MTH113 all with a grade of C or better, and reading proficiency Co-requisite: PNE181 Medical Surgical Nursing I Clinical B. 6 Credit Hours C. Medical Surgical Nursing I (MS I) addresses the care of the adult including patient care, care-giver teaching, collaborative care, cultural and ethical considerations, patient safety, nutrition, and drug therapy in an evidence-based practice context. The concepts of adult medical surgical care are presented in three separate courses in Level I PN to enable the student to explore each area fully. Specific to MS I, students will examine the nursing process and documentation, intravenous therapy, the surgical patient, and medication administration. The student will also begin the study of body systems and related disease processes including diabetes, fluid and electrolyte balance, musculoskeletal, and the cardiovascular system. (F, S) II. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOME/CORRESPONDING ASSESSMENT MEASURES Identify nursing care that contributes to the enhancement of the health care delivery setting and protects patients and health care in collaboration with the healthcare team members in a protective safe environment as related to examining the nursing process and documentation, intravenous therapy, the surgical patient, and medication administration, the study of body systems and related disease processes including diabetes, fluid and electrolyte balance, musculoskeletal, and the cardiovascular system Construct nursing care that incorporates the knowledge of expected stages of growth and development, as well as prevention and/or early detection of health problems to support health promotion and maintenance as related to examining the nursing process and documentation, intravenous therapy, the surgical patient, and medication administration, the study of body systems and related disease processes including diabetes, fluid and electrolyte balance, musculoskeletal, and the cardiovascular system 2
3 Formulate a comprehensive care plan for the client including a head-to-toe assessment; incorporating growth and development aspects related to client s needs, utilization of pharmacological actions, and recognition of potential side-effects, application of principles of prioritization, implementation, evaluation, and revision of a nursing care plan as related to examining the nursing process and documentation, intravenous therapy, the surgical patient, and medication administration, the study of body systems and related disease processes including diabetes, fluid and electrolyte balance, musculoskeletal, and the cardiovascular system Relate the role of the practical nurse in the promotion of physical health and well-being in providing care and comfort, reducing risk potential for patients, and assisting them with the management of health alterations in the performance of activities of daily living, administering medications, monitoring intravenous therapies, reducing the development of complications related to treatments, procedures or existing conditions, and providing care in patients with acute, chronic, or life-threatening health conditions as related to intravenous therapy, the surgical patient, and medication administration, the study of body systems and related disease processes including diabetes, fluid and electrolyte balance, musculoskeletal, and the cardiovascular system. 5 VIII. METHOD OF EVALUATION A. Unit 87% B. Comprehensive Final Exam 11% C. 2% To successfully complete the course, the student must achieve a 78% average overall. Additionally, an 80% is required on both the Intravenous (IV Exam) Exam and the Intravenous Math (IV Math) Exam. If a student fails to achieve the 80% on either the IV Exam or the IV Math Exam on the first attempt, one re-test attempt is allowed. Failure to achieve 80% after the second attempt, on either exam, results in failure of the course. Note: Only the first attempt grade will be counted toward the course average. IX. ACADEMIC HONESTY STATEMENT All students are responsible for complying with campus and nursing program policies as stated in the Nursing Program and College Student Handbooks. (see College Website, XI. CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY Students earn their financial aid by regularly attending and actively participating in their coursework. If a student does not actively participate, he/she may have to return financial aid funds. Consult the College Catalog or a Student Financial Services representative for more details. 5
