1 Risk Assessment Document for Basketball Ireland This risk assessment considers the potential for harm to come to whilst they are in Basketball Ireland s care. This risk assessment precedes the Child Safeguarding Statement (Section 11 (1b) Children First Act 2015) which is developed following this risk assessment process. In accordance with the requirements of Section 11 (1) of the Children First Act 2015 the risk is of abuse and not general health and safety risk (covered under a separate H&S policy and risk assessment). Section 11 (1) of the Children First Act 2015 states that where a person proposes to operate as a provider of a relevant service, he or she shall, within 3 months from the date on which he or she commences as such a provider (a) Undertake an assessment of any potential for harm to a child while availing of the service (in this section referred to as a risk ). Potential risk of harm to CLUB & COACHING PRACTICES Lack of coaching qualification Recruitment policy* Supervision issues * Club/Region/ Proof of qualification is confirmed and updated by ongoing review. Policies in place, circulated and available Unauthorised photography & recording activities H Guidelines for use of photographic & filming equipment Policies in place, circulated and available Behavioural Issues H Code of Conduct Code in place, circulated and 1
2 Safeguarding Level 1 (min) Disciplinary, Complaints & Club/Region/ available Programme in process to make SL1 obligatory for coaches Complaints & Disciplinary processes well established and easy to access. Lack of gender balance amongst coaches No guidance for travelling and away trips H Guidelines for travelling with Children & Residential Events with Children* Programme begun within last 12 months to establish why more female players to do not enter coaching and to encourage them to do so through respected and well known existing female coaches. Concise policies in place and distributed to all squads. Lack of adherence with misc procedures in Safeguarding policy (i.e. mobile, photography, transport) COMPLAINTS & DISCIPLINE additional training will be provided. H Safeguarding policy as stated in Code of Ethics for Children s Sport* Disciplinary, Complaints & 2 Liaison Officers from Governing committee in place with all squads to check on adherence to all policies.
3 Lack of awareness of a Complaints & Disciplinary policy Communications procedure Club/Region/ All policies well flagged, circulated and published on website. Also, they are constantly referred to. Communication is good Difficulty in raising an issue by child & or parent Reason: Covered above Communications procedure Our Open Communication protocols are well established and we receive regular feedback on problems, issues and resolutions. Complaints not being dealt with seriously Every contact is logged and dealt with. We have never had such a complaint over a long period of time. REPORTING PROCEDURES Lack of knowledge of organisational and statutory reporting procedures No Mandated Person appointed Guidelines for Officials Code of Conduct /Behaviour 3 As outlined above, all our guidelines and protocols are circulated and available. We do not get feedback that our complaint system is difficult to access. Fill the Mandated person role as soon as practicable. Provide training for MP
