1 A P R I L, Healthcare for Underprivileged Program (HUP) Distressed Children & Infants International (DCI) DCI s Healthcare for Underprivileged Program (HUP), initiated in 2008, provides curative and preventive health care for residents of the Kallyanpur slum area in Dhaka, Bangladesh. 2 HUP Activities - April, 2015 The clinic doctors served the patients 24 days in a total of 24 service days of the clinic on April A total of 507 patients received treatment and medicines from the clinic. Social workers worked on health and hygiene awareness and family planning measures, provided counseling to adolescent girls and Antenatal/Postnatal mothers, and followed up on malnourished children during this month. Thirteen babies were delivered by trained person. Two of them are twin. Among the 13 babies one baby was still birth. Remaining babies are healthy and they all took colostrums. 122 people received anti-helminthes treatment. The DCI s clinic staff made the slum dwellers aware of the summer season and the common diseases which are very frequent during this season. Through this service DCI aims to provide specialist health services from US doctors to the underprivileged people of Bangladesh. Dr. Azizul Hoque, a renowned cardiologist from Atlanta, Georgia took the leadership on behalf of DCI for this project. In April 2015 a total of 21 patients received treatment from USA through telemedicine services. THANK YOU for your support and collaboration. 4 Antenatal mothers - April, 2015 Awareness classes were held for antenatal mothers. In these classes the doctors and the social workers talk about healthy habits, what to avoid, what to do, how to take care of themselves and where to go for help. Most of the mothers in the area are under age and has almost no education, so these classes are helping them to take charge of their own body, own life. The goal of awareness classes for antenatal mothers are to decrease illness and death of mothers, newborns, and children of slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Ruby K Hossain, DCI Los Angeles, USA representative participated in this month s seminar. Adolescent Girls April, 2015 Awareness classes were arranged for the adolescent girls in the Health Clinic. Main objects of these classes are to make adolescents girls aware about the different issues of adolescent period, help them understand the physical and psychological changes they are undergoing, basic health & hygiene education, counseling and teaching them about problems associated with early marriage and making them aware about their rights. Visitors April, 2015 Dr. Ruby K. Hossain a renowned pediatrician in Los Angeles, USA visited DCI s Healthcare for Underprivileged program (HUP). During her visit she met and talked to all HUP officials and doctors about the activities of HUP. On 5th April, 2015 Dr. Ruby K. Hossain joined an awareness seminar on Development of Antenatal Mothers as a special guest and gave an awareness speech before the antenatal mothers and others. In addition, on 7th April,2015 on World Health Day 2015 She provided treatment to the children of Kallyanpur porabari slum and gave many health tips to the children and mothers;. She was very delighted to see all the activities of HUP and thanked to all the officials and doctors of HUP for their endless contribution for the underprivileged people of kallyanpur porabari slum. 5 Case Study: Sumaiya Akther Case Study Full Name: Sumaiya Akther Age: 20 Years Sex: Female Name of Husband: Md. Rasel Age: 24 Years Occupation: Hawker Permanent Address: Village: Razar Chor, Post Office: Arial Kha, Thana: Shibchar, District: Madaripur. Present Address: Notun Bazar, 8 No. Kallaynpur Porabari Slum, Dhaka. Sumaiya Akther has been living in Gabtoli Slum for a long time with her parents. She was born in a very poor family. Sumaiya Akther with her 5 brothers, 1 sister and parents lived in a one room home in Slum. She married at an young age and became pregnant and sick. Social workers heard all the problems from Sumaiya Akhter and took her to DCI Health Clinic. She was in a very bad financial state so she got all financial support from HUP, she did all the tests like VDRL, cbc, HBsAg, USG of pregnancy profile. The doctors of DCI Health Clinic provided her all medicines. After taking the medicines regularly and follow up of Social Workers she became healthy. We hope within next month, she will give birth to a healthy baby. Case Study: Siam a malnourish child Name: Siam Age: 2+ years Weight: 7 KG Father s name: Golam Mollik (Untraced) Mother s name: Amena Begum Occupation: Home Maker Permanent Address: Village: Ilisha, Post Office: Tulatuli, Thana: Bhola, District: Bhola Present Address: Notun Bazar, Porabari Slum, Unit-8, Kallyanpur, Dhaka Siam is living at 8 No. Kallyanpur Porabari Slum for a long time. Siam has three brothers and a sister. His father is a rickshaw puller. His father was the only earning member in his family and it was quite impossible for him to support his family. He left his family when Siam s mom was still pregnant with him. In that situation, her mother started working in different houses as a maid servant and was barely able to support her children and herself. Siam was born but was severely malnourished. He was in danger. Siam s mother was also very ill. At that time, the field workers of HUP heard about her situation and went to her house. They took them to DCI Health Clinic. After that, the specialist doctor checked up Siam and his mother very carefully and took proper steps for their health. Doctor prescribed some nutritious food for Siam urgently. DCI provided all the food and medicine requirements of Siam and his mother. Siam is becoming healthy day by day. His mother is also getting proper treatment. Siam s mother now comes to Health Clinic regularly to get check up for herself and Siam. Now Siam is out of danger and his mother is much better. Siam s mother is grateful to DCI Health Clinic for everything that DCI has done for them. P A G E 5
