Partners came together to develop an integrated knowledge system to inform local planning based on evidence. Common mandate for prevention of chronic diseases: IRHA, CCS, CCMB, H&SF, Alliance Partners in Planning for Healthy Living SNOWMAN conceptual framework
Regional Risk Factor Surveillance in Manitoba Surveillance Evaluation PRACTICE -BASED EVIDENCE Knowledge Reporting Exchange Program Development EVIDENCE -BASED PRACTICE Best Practice Identification And Dissemination
The goal is to develop an integrated system of ongoing risk factor surveillance in MB at the community level: Produce practice-based learning Consistent and sustainable across province Based on evidence (preferably local) Builds capacity to plan at all levels (community, school, region, province) Allows us to learn as we go
Census of grades 6 to 12 in most schools 4 pages, 51 questions Multiple choice, machine scannable minutes to complete (short) Includes questions on tobacco, nutrition, physical activity, selfesteem and school connectedness
Environmental scan & literature search of existing risk factor surveillance surveys, sampling methods & validation techniques Consultation with other interested parties in development of survey core content Youth Focus Groups & consultations to ensure survey results are meaningful & useful
Census chosen to provide local-level data for local planning Avoids study design & weighting issues Straight-forward & easy to manage Economies of scale (printing surveys, report production)
Surveys started in fall of 2005 in IRHA Other RHAs conducted in spring 2008 Facilitated by the RHAs with the support of MECY and HCM CCMB provides statistical/analytic expertise & HSFM provides grants to support data collection IRHA resurvey spring 2009
School division approvals sought to conduct survey Pilot testing survey Consult with school divisions in planning for implementation of the Youth Health Survey

Now faced with the challenge of transforming data into information and shared social knowledge Multi-faceted, multi-level approaches Settings, priority populations, intervention approaches, purposes Regular educational sessions for those who interpret/use data
Planning for healthy living programs Evaluating existing programs/policies By organizations such as schools, school boards, RHAs, MECY, HCM, Healthy Communities, NGOs, other partners

All RHAs & schools/school divisions should be congratulated for facilitating the youth health survey This level of risk factor reporting has not been done in this way anywhere else
The goal is to develop a system of ongoing risk factor surveillance in Manitoba at the community level.
