1 Report of NCLEX-PN Examination Pass Rates for 2011 Agenda Item: Prepared by: J.Hooper Board Meeting: April 2012 Summary: The period between January 1 and ending December 31 is used for the purposes of determining programs NCLEX-PN exam ination pass rates. This report provides final 2011 NCLEX exam ination pass rates of first tim e test-takers from the vocational nursing education program s in Texas. Program s with an asterisk (*) received commendations for their pass rates of 90% or higher. New programs that have not had graduates or first time candidates during the examination year are not included in the report. Rule 214.4( c) states that Approval status is determ ined biennially by the Board on the basis of the program s com pliance audit, NCLEX-PN exam ination pass rate, and other pertinent data. The biennial continuing approval docum ents will be sent to program s after Board Staff review the 2011 Nursing Education Program Inform ation Surveys (NEPIS) and the 2011 Com pliance Audits for Nursing Education Program s (CANEP) for each nursing program. Programs with a pass rate below 80% for one year will be required to submit a self-study report to Board Staff following Board guidelines. Programs with a pass rate below 80% for two consecutive years m ay be placed on full approval with warning and a survey visit will be conducted. Trends: A review of the 2011 NCLEX report (See Attachment #1) indicates that: The overall NCLEX-PN exam ination pass rate for Texas program s (86.72%) is lower than the Texas pass rate for 2010 but is still higher than the national average for vocational programs (84.84%). However, the 2011 average pass rate for the Texas vocational nursing program s places Texas in th fortieth (40 ) place am ong the fifty-three (53) mem ber boards reported. Of the ninety-seven (97) vocational program s with reported 2011 exam ination pass rates, fifty-three (53) received commendations for a pass rate over 90%. Sixteen (16) of the vocational programs had a pass rate of 100%. The following table provides Texas and National NCLEX-PN exam ination pass rates for the past five (5) years which indicates growth over the past five years in the number of licensed vocational nurses from Texas programs: Year Average for Texas PN Program s 86.72% 5098/ % 4990/ % 4840/ % 4461/ % 4362/4886 National Average for PN Programs 84.84% 87.06% 85.73% 85.62% 87.25% This report is for information only. No Board action is required. NCLEX exam ination pass rates will be considered as Board Staff review the com pleted 2011 Nursing Education Information Surveys (NEPIS) and the com pleted Com pliance Audits for Nursing Education Program s (CANEP) for the 2012 BON Approval Letters.
