5 Public Chair Report January 9, 2018 I attended the O Leary Health Foundation Tree Lighting on December 6. Foundation Chair, Eva Rodgerson, also had a Carol Sing planned for the hospital and Margaret Stewart Ellis Home. Residents enjoyed the evening of music. Many Foundation members, community members, and Minister Henderson attended this event. I would like to thank this group for all the volunteer hours they put in to improve health care not only in their area but also across the Island. On December 15, I attended the Executive Search Committee meeting. Boyden, one of the largest healthcare practices in Canada, was the successful group hired to lead the search for the new Health PEI CEO. Boyden conducts CEO level searches nationally each year. An initial meeting was held to establish the mandate, Terms of Reference, and timelines. The executive search professionals have already begun contacting and consulting shareholders. This search should be completed by the spring. At this time, I want to thank Health PEI staff for the excellent work they do throughout the year was more demanding as staff went through the Accreditation Canada process in addition to their regular demanding roles. May you all continue to provide outstanding healthcare services to Islanders in Phyllis Horne, Board Chair

6 Interim CEO, Health PEI Report to Islanders January 2018 Transformation and growth are two words that speak to health care today. With changing demographics, public and patient expectations, workforce resources and best practices, health care systems across Canada, including PEI, are in a constant state of transformation. We are constantly striving to become more efficient, effective and flexible as we continue to care for and support the health and well-being of Islanders. One of the ways in which Health PEI is adjusting to change is through strategic investment in frontline health care providers. Our frontline staff interact directly and regularly with Islanders, having a tremendous impact on an individual s quality of care and experience. Over the last two months, we have announced frontline investments across several services including primary care, mental health and nursing. Within our provincial diabetes program we invested in and have hired a permanent full-time nurse practitioner an important resource for Islanders living with diabetes. The nurse practitioner provides timely access to primary diabetes care, including medication management and treatment adjustment. This is important to maintaining a good quality of life and preventing or delaying the onset of other health complications such as heart and kidney disease, loss of eyesight, or loss of lower limbs. The Seniors Mental Health Resource Team was established in Kings County. Similar to teams that already exist in Prince and Queens Counties, the Kings County team serves older adults who are experiencing complex emotional, cognitive, functional or behavioral problems. They provide clinicbased services and community outreach to clients, in their homes, in community care, and in long-term care facilities. Among the health care providers hired to expand this service are registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and social workers. One of the priorities outlined in the province s first-ever Nursing Strategy released last year is building and strengthening recruitment and retention activities, including hiring more new graduate registered nurses. Last year, Health PEI hired 64 new graduate nurses into permanent positions and an additional 17 into casual positions. Nurses, including nurse practitioners, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, are an important cornerstone to our ability to deliver health care services across a variety of settings. As health care continues to transform and grow, Health PEI will continue to be flexible and strategic with our investments in front line health care and the people who deliver it. The above mentioned are but a few examples of the progress we are making. As stewards of the health care system, it is important that we make sure Islanders are receiving the right care, in the right place and by the right provider.
