1 Introduction From time to time, children may need to take prescribed drugs during the school day, to treat a condition which is not severe enough to keep them off school or for the treatment of a long term condition such as asthma. The Governors of Jennett s Park CE Primary School, in accordance with The Children and Families Act 2014, are committed to ensuring that arrangements are in place to support pupils with medical conditions. This policy has been written with reference to Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions December Aims: The aim of this policy is to clarify the school s/parent s responsibilities in relation to medicines in school. It will also outline the procedures followed to ensure safe administration of prescribed medicines. This policy will help to ensure that children with medical needs receive proper care and support in school. Our aim is to enable regular attendance at school for all our children. Roles and Responsibilities: The Governors, as the Employer, are responsible for the policy and its review, as well as ensuring that there is a thorough Health and Safety policy, and that receive appropriate training. The Head Teacher is responsible for putting the policy into practice, for developing detailed procedures and to ensure receives the training and support they need. The Head Teacher will also ensure that all relevant personnel are made aware of the policy and procedures, including and parents. The Head Teacher will agree with parents the support which may be provided by the school. Where deemed necessary, the Head Teacher may seek advice from other professionals including the school nurse, the child s GP, other medical advisers and the Local Authority. Teachers and other should be aware of the medical needs of children in their care and what action to take should an emergency arise. It should be noted that Teachers conditions of employment do not include giving or supervising a pupil taking medicines; support are employed and appropriately trained to manage medicine as part of their duties. All who agree to administer medicine are given appropriate training. Parents should provide the Head Teacher with sufficient information about their child s medical needs if treatment or special care is needed. They should work in partnership with the Head Teacher to agree the school s role in supporting the child s medical needs. Parents are expected to keep children at home when they are acutely unwell. The Local Authority has a duty to provide advice where requested. The Local Health Services can provide advice and support as required, and may be able to provide training. Procedures: If a parent wishes a child to take a prescribed medicine during school time they should either arrange with the Head Teacher to come to school to administer the medicine or complete the parental agreement form, giving permission for the Head Teacher or his/her nominee to administer the medicine and deliver the medicine with instructions to the school office where it will be kept securely. 2 - Name of Medicine - Batch number - Name of Child - Dosage - Method of administration - Time/frequency of administration - The prescribing doctor s name - Expiry Short-term prescription requirements should only be brought to school if it is detrimental to the child s health not to have the medicine during the school day. If medicine should be administered three times a day it is expected that it will be administered at home (before school, after school and bedtime). If the period of administering medicine is 8 days or more, there must be an individual Health Care Plan (IHCP). The school will not accept medicines that have been taken out of the container as originally dispensed, nor make changes to prescribed dosages. The school will not administer medicines that have not been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber or pharmacist prescriber, unless it is done as part of an individual Health Care Plan. No medicine will be administered without written parental permission and the school will not administer nonprescribed medicines or treatments. The school will keep a record of all medicines administered. All medicines will be kept in the school office and a note will be placed in the child s class register alerting the class teacher to medication requiring administration. The note will contain the name of the child and the date and time the child is to be sent to the office to be given their medicine. Cough sweets may only be brought to school with the permission of the Head Teacher. These must also be held in the school office and are treated as a medicine. Where administration of prescribed medicines requires technical or medical knowledge, the school will provide appropriate training to from a qualified health professional. School receive training on an annual basis on selected common medical issues. Currently these include specific epipen training (anaphylaxis), asthma and diabetes. The decision to administer medicines remains at the discretion of the Head Teacher. Educational Visits: Children with specific medical needs will be encouraged to participate fully in all school activities, including visits, as far as they are capable. Reasonable adjustments will be made to support this practice. Staff supervising visits will be aware of medical needs and relevant emergency procedures. A copy of health care plans will be taken on visits in the event of information being needed in an emergency. Parental and medical advice may be taken prior to a visit off-site. 3 Long term or complex medical needs The school will work closely with parents and medical professionals to gain a thorough understanding of the needs of the child and the type of support required. Where it is helpful and appropriate, an Individual health care plan (IHCP) will be written, involving parents and health professionals. This will include: details of the condition, special requirements, side effects of medicines taken, what constitutes an emergency, what action to take in an emergency, what not to do in an emergency, who to contact in an emergency and the role can play. 4 Appendix 1 Parental agreement for school/setting to administer medicine The school/setting will not give your child medicine unless you complete and sign this form, and the school or setting has a policy that the can administer medicine. You are also agreeing to other appropriate employees of the Governing Body to administer medicine if authorised to do so by the school. I accept that this is a service that the school/setting is not obliged to undertake. I understand that I must notify the school/setting of any changes in writing.
