1 The purpose of the LRC experience is to provide students with an opportunity to practice previously learned skills, to learn new psychomotor skills and to further develop communication techniques. LRC experiences for N1020 are scheduled for each week. The first year class has been divided into two groups to enhance individual learning, to allow for adequate practice time, and to provide students with additional guidance from your lab instructors. Advance preparation for all sessions is essential. Plan to spend a minimum of one and one-half hours for preparation for each lab. LRC Attendance Attendance is mandatory. In the case of illness, students must provide a medical certificate for the absence and you must notify LRC staff if you will be missing a lab. (See phone # s below). In the event of an absence, the student will be expected to make up the lab independently following the process described below: 1. Please contact the Learning Resource Centre Coordinator to schedule a date and time to make up the lab (availability of space will need to be considered). Please note: The lab must be made up within 2 weeks of the missed lab. 2. Complete your readings and watch posted videos in advance so that you have seen a demonstration of the skill/procedure. 3. Video yourself completing the skill and submit to the instructor. The video will be reviewed and feedback will be provided to correct any errors or difficulties with technique. 4. Complete and submit the assigned pre lab questions. A case study may also be assigned to assist with critical thinking and application.

3 Math Competency Exam in Medication Calculations Mathematic Competency Policy Any student who has completed a lab or class on medication or intravenous therapy must write a Mathematics Competency Test, and achieve a grade of 85%. Calculators are not permitted during the test. Remedial help will be available prior to writing a supplemental test. It is the student s responsibility to arrange help sessions with nursing lab instructors, if desired, prior to the date of the supplemental test. If a student is not successful in a supplemental test, faculty, in consultation with the Dean of Nursing, reserves the right to assign a failure in the course. The decision to fail the student will be made on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to the student s academic and clinical performance in the program. Documentation of a failed math competency exam will be placed in the student s file. Should a student fail three math competency exams throughout the program, this will be cause for dismissal from the program. Each week in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), we will define new terms to help you develop your medical vocabulary. The following schedule outlines the lessons you will complete in your text this semester. We will have several quizzes over the semester based on these lessons. The quizzes will be posted on Moodle and you will complete them online. You will be permitted one attempt to complete the quiz once you log in and a time limit of approximately 90 seconds/question will be allowed. You must score a minimum of 85% in each quiz.
