: Date & Time: Venue: HIAG Minutes Thursday 23 rd August Treetops Restaurant, Macclesfield District General Hospital Attendees: (5) KE Y & Organisation HB Patient information officer Angela Donnelly MH Library Manager Julia Berry Macmillan Cancer Information Officer Apologies Wendy Carroll, Dianne Grant, Lyn Gorman, John Hooley, Mary Jepson, 1. Notes and Action Register from Previous July Action Log No. By Whom: 1.1 Minutes of previous meeting were agreed as a true record % standard for July In July, 41 leaflets were reviewed, of these 4 were archived and 27 were completed within six weeks (65%). HB is awaiting confirmation of the leaflet content from the authors. Patient Survey Comments, Feedback on Patient Information and NHS Choices The National Inpatients Cancer survey for 2011 results have been published, which the trust scored very highly on eg National Cancer Survey Highlights % of patients were given easy to understand written information about their diagnostic test. Improved from 86% in National average is 86%. Location: Treetops Restaurant Page: 1 of 6 Minutes of the HIAG Health Information Advisory Group
84% of patients said they were given written information about their operation. Down from 91% in National average is 73%. 95% of patients said that hospital staff told them who to contact if they were worried about their condition or treatment after they left hospital. Improved from 93% in National average is 93%. NHS Choices Two comments were posted on NHS Choices about patient information at East Cheshire NHS Trust one very favourable comment was about the Audiology Dept, and one comment was about the Day Case Unit as follows: Anonymous visited Day treatment services in July What I liked- Punctual, efficient and extremely pleasant treatment from all the staff. Having never had treatment before I was nervous but put at ease and it was a pleasant experience. What could have been improved- The waiting area where I went for a colonoscopy was not screened very well so that those in a state of undress could be seen by all. Could be disturbing for older people. Added 08 August Translations and other formats A patient tried to get an audiology appointment letter printed in large print but was told that only cataract surgery appointments are printed in large print. HB has contacted the PAS Dept about this, and asked them to enlarge letters on the photocopier when requested. They are going to look into printing all letters in font size 14. No translations were carried out this month. 5.0 HealthWatch This organisation is replacing LiNK soon. HB attended a public consultation at the Town Hall where they explained about the new health and social care organisation. Location: Treetops Restaurant Page: 2 of 6 Minutes of the HIAG Health Information Advisory Group
Leaflets to be discussed Managing your bowel after your anterior resection The committee thought this content was excellent. Readers Panel comments were A lot to understand, but well written. I assume there are patients groups where people can come together to discuss how they are getting on, to know you are not alone is a big help. An excellent piece of work, which I believe will be of great help to patients who have undergone serious treatment. Clear information and not written in a clinical manner. Well done! Phew! A lot take in. Chest Drain Kerry, Housekeeper from Ward 4 commented that nurses don t remove the drain so HB to check with the author, otherwise the committee thought this was well written and clear. Readers Panel comments were Very clear explanation for patients of the reasons and effects for this procedure. Overall tone is reassuring for patient. Good. Most reassuring. Food Challenges The committee thought this children s leaflet was very good. Readers Panel comments were A well produced leaflet. Gives parents / children a clear idea of both preparing for, and undertaking the test. Confident, reassuring tone to the whole leaflet. Concise and informative. Colorectal Nursing Service This leaflet was very clear. Planned Surgery This leaflet is for patients who are placed on a waiting list for surgery. The committee thought it need clarifying as reference was made to the pre-op assessment clinic but didn t specify how patients would know they had to go there. HB to check with pre-op assessment clinic. General Anaesthetic for dental procedures This is a letter for parents of young children or children or adults with learning difficulties so HB has written it in easy read format. The trust has bought some illustrations from an organisation called CHANGE who specialist in easy read Location: Treetops Restaurant Page: 3 of 6 Minutes of the HIAG Health Information Advisory Group
formats. The committee thought the leaflet was easy to understand and liked the illustrations Lower limb exercises group This Congleton Outpatient leaflet was found to be very clear and instructive. Mouthcare following dental extraction The committee members found some of the information conflicting eg do not use a mouthwash for 24 hours and if your mouth bleeds use a mouthwash. HB to check with Lyn Gorman, dental services. Dental extraction inhalation sedation The members found this leaflet to be clear. These are the leaflets that have been reviewed in July Location: Treetops Restaurant Page: 4 of Welcome to childrens ward for children paediatrics Your baby's visit to the hearing assessment clinic paediatrics Glue ear. Samina Taj, Communications has issued standard templates for each business unit, although there seems to be an issue with printing copies in black and white. Printed copies will be available in the Macmillan Cancer Centre and ed to the User Group. Julia will it to HB for the website. Location: Treetops Restaurant Page: 5 of 6 Minutes of the HIAG Health Information Advisory Group
The Macmillan Information & Support Service is also piloting a volunteer driver scheme for local residents to take patients to the Christie hospital when they have no alternative arrangements. They are hoping to recruit volunteers but customer services do not have the resources at the moment. Angela commented that she knows someone who wants to volunteer for the library and has been waiting since May to become an authorised volunteer at the trust. HB asked Angela to ask him if he would like to become a member of HIAG. Julia said that a volunteer psychotherapist is starting at the Macmillan Centre soon to help patients who have needle phobias etc. 8.0 Next meeting: Thursday 20 th Sept 10-11am, Treetops Restaurant, Macclesfield District General Hospital Dates in Treetops Restaurant.
