ON PRODUCTION OF THIS DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY THE RELEVANT TRAINER OR AN ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE FOR A SPECIFIC TRAINING COURSE, THE PROGRAMMING OF THEIR SALTO/UCARD CAN BE EXTENDED TO ALLOW ENTRY TO OTHER RELEVANT AREAS AND/OR OUT-OF-HOURS. 2 Using this pack you will be able to ensure that you can fulfil the first requirements of the Health & Safety Code of Practice. More safety information and guidelines can be accessed via the Safety Services webpages and the Departmental USpace area on the MBB Homepage There is also a yellow MBB Safety Information folder in every laboratory. A notice on the inside of the main door will give you details of its whereabouts. Please contact the member of staff responsible for the facility below to receive appropriate training and/or advice and get them to sign the document to show that you have been trained. If you progress down the list in order you should be able to fulfil the requirements whilst commencing your work in the Department. COSHH, Risk Assessments & Genetic Manipulation These must be read and signed as applicable - check with Academic Supervisor/Lab technician Laboratory Waste Disposal Keep to the University Waste Management System at all times. Carry out, and pass, the on-line Waste Management Training at - check with Academic Supervisor/Lab technician Safety Wear (Personal Protective Equipment) as appropriate to working requirements (Howie coat (labcoat), disposable nitrile gloves, cryogen-resistant gloves, goggles, safety shoes) See COSHH/Risk Assessments. DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Assessment If you are required to use DSE for around 1 hour or more per day, or around 10 hours per week, you are required to be trained to be able set up your workstation so that it is optimised for your use. The on-line training package can be accessed at: NB. It is the prerequisite of MBB Good Lab Practice that Lab(Howie) coats are worn in all laboratories. They should not, however, be worn in communal/office/social areas and neither should disposable gloves remain on outside of the immediate laboratory environment.
4 The registration and/or training listed below will vary depending upon the requirements of the COSHH & Risk Assessments relating to your programme of research. You will then be able to have your Salto Card updated and use the centrifuges without supervision. Your Training Schedule will require the signature of the Trainer to prove completion of training. All Departmental Policy on Safety is made and implemented by the Safety Committee. If you have any concerns about safety do not hesitate to contact one of the Safety Reps who can advise you or refer you to the Departmental Safety Officer, Pam Scholes (22735 p.scholes@shef.ac.uk ). The Academic Advisors to the Committee are: Dr. Phil Mitchell (Biological Safety), Dr. Pat Baker (X-rays), Prof. Per Bullough (Lasers) The Department is required to have trained First Aiders the number of which varies as staff and PhD students leave. If you already have First Aid training or feel you would like to undertake some contact Ruth Roberts (24415 ). In every laboratory/office in close proximity to the handwash area, you will find the first aid kit and eye wash. A notice on the door will tell you the location of the yellow ringbinder that contains MBB Safety Information relevant to this particular area. If you are in doubt about anything check the information or ask to be sure you are working safely. You are now a part of a Department which is a member of the university- and nation-wide Green Impact scheme. This is a scheme which aims to reduce our impact on the environment by energy-saving, recycling, changing behaviours, etc. Our policy is to make every member aware of energy saving and green issues, and to encourage active participation by staff and students to improve our performance.
