2 Who Are We? The NACC/PSW is the national body representing formal caregivers and front line health care workers. The Association promotes the voice of PSWs, Health Care Aides, Resident Care Workers, Personal Attendants, Homemakers, and the needs and interests of work in the community. Advocacy and leadership Research and education Information, communication and resource development The NACC/PSW is made up of a diverse group of individuals, CPSWs, Nurses, Doctors and organizations, government and insurance companies. The Certified Caregiver/Personal Support Worker is a formally registered, unregulated front line health care worker in hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes, communities, and for private care

4 National Association of Certified Caregivers/Personal Support Workers (NACC/PSW) Mission To join with CPSWs, service providers, policy makers, trainers, and other stakeholders, to identify and respond to the needs of formal frontline health care workers and caregivers in Canada and other countries Vision The vision of the NACC/PSW is to maintain, promote, and enhance a recognizable professional status for front-line health care workers, (CPSWs,Caregivers/Personal Support Workers). In pursuit of this vision, the NACC/PSW will, through participatory consultation, and the provision of support services, represent its members to all. As the authoritative voice of the profession in Canada, the NACC/PSW will at all times be aware of the directions and trends in the Health Care Field, and respond to these in an appropriate manner reflecting its commitment to act as a custodian of professional ethics.

5 NACC/PSW The NACC/PSW is a member driven, non-profit association, aided by an Executive Director, Board of Directors and office staff. NACC/PSW representatives are active volunteers from the identified members of the NACC/PSW membership, who organize, provide leadership, and serve as advocates of the profession in our rapidly changing social and political environment. The NACC/PSW leads its membership in presenting and promoting a professional image to government, employers, the public, educational institutions, business, and to other Health Care professions.

6 Attributes of CPSWs Diversity:Caregivers, regardless of cultural background or training relationship, need to be appropriately supported within institutions and communities. This includes a cultural diversity of workers with a common standard of training that is transferrable across the provinces, and throughout different countries. Quality, accountability and integrity:those folks who require a Professional Caregiver have the right to quality services that support the integrity of the caregivingrole, whether it is carried out as a PSW, PA, HCA, Homemaker, or RPN. There is accountability and integrity within the association for quality workers. Recognition:Caregivers must be recognized, valued, and supported for their integral role in health care and their contributions to society, and this includes insurance benefit plans that will support the front line caregiver within all organizations and home care. Shared responsibility:coherent and comprehensive policies need to be developed that will assist the caregiver towards increasing the skill level and individual responsibilities for health and social care, in the home, institution and in the community. Partnerships and collaboration:caregivers should be key partners in developing policies and programs for institutional, home and community care at the local, regional, provincial, territorial and national levels.

7 Code of Ethics as a CPSW THE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CERTIFIED CAREGIVER / PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKERS RECOGNIZE THE PRECEPTS OF PERSONAL INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AS FUNDAMENTAL ETHICS, AND AS SUCH: SHALLestablish and maintain the highest moral principles with Care, Commitment, and Service, paramount to the delivery of preservation. SHALLbe committed to the benefit of the individual client in care, with respect, love, and compassion, and a goal towards maximizing good. SHALLvalue health and well-being, and will assist persons to achieve their optimum level of living in situations of normal health, illness, injury, or in the process of dying. SHALLrespect and promote the autonomy of clients and help them to express their health needs and values. SHALLvalue and advocate the dignity and self-respect of human beings. SHALL apply and promote principles of equity and fairness to assist clients. SHALLact in a manner consistent with their professional responsibilities and the National Standards of Care Practices. SHALLpractice environments conducive to safe, competent, and ethical care, and shall safeguardthe trust of clients in that information learned in the context of a professional relationship is shared outside the health care team only with the client's permission, or as legally required.
