Transfer Credit Information At the University of Manitoba, all course work from a recognized post-secondary institution will be considered as part of the application for admission process for all undergraduate degree and diploma programs. Courses are evaluated for advanced standing or transfer credit on a course-by-course basis and assigned a University of Manitoba equivalent, where applicable. Where a direct equivalent does not exist, students may receive general (unallocated) credit. The regulations regarding transfer credit are program specific and vary considerably depending on the faulty or school of application. A shelf-life rule applies to this policy, University courses completed within the last ten (or fewer) years and Nursing courses within the last five (or fewer) years will only be considered. Students may be asked to provide comprehensive and accurate course outlines or syllabi, as issued by their institution of study, for all courses lacking a current evaluation. Course outlines or syllabi should include information on: course objectives, outline of the units studied, textbook(s) used, assignments, and accompanying laboratory information, if applicable, to assist in the transfer credit assessment process. For information on current course evaluations receiving credit, please visit: LPNs Licensed Practical Nurses who completed the Practical Nursing Program at Assiniboine Community College or the Diploma in Practical Nursing at University College of the North within five years of admission to the JBN may be eligible for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Nursing Program. Please indicate on the application form if you are an LPN grad from either program. Contact a Nursing Student Advisor for information. RPNs Registered Psychiatric Nurses may be eligible for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Nursing Program. Please inform the University at the time of admission if you are an RPN. Section 4: Selection Process A. Calculation of the Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA) The Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA) will be calculated as follows: Core course (9) credits + Science elective SCI (9) credits + Humanities H/Social Science SS/NUR elective (12) credits = 30 credit hours The core course calculation includes the best (highest grade) of the following courses: BIOL 1410 Anatomy of the Human Body BIOL 1412 Physiology of the Human Body MBIO 1220 Essentials of Microbiology Science/Humanities/Social Science/NUR electives the best (highest grades) are 7 P a g e

8 selected and calculated in the Adjusted Grade Point Average. Students who apply to the BN program must have completed no fewer than 30 credit hours of university level coursework and must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5. Students who have completed 30 credit hours or more and who have not achieved at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average will be considered for admission on the basis of an Adjusted Grade Point Average. An adjusted grade point average is calculated by using the best 30 credit hours of course work (highest grades) from the following identified combination of degree requirements: Biological Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Sociology, English, and Native Language. Subjects are identified in specialized formats with icons: (CORE+SCI+H+SS/NUR). **Note: Only University level courses completed within the last 10 years prior to admission to Nursing will be used in APGA calculation. In the calculation of the AGPA, all university-level courses which have been assigned a final grade are considered completed university work. Courses graded pass are excluded from the calculation of AGPA. Courses completed on a full-or parttime basis in all undergraduate and graduate programs will be used in the AGPA. However, spring 2019 courses will not be included in the AGPA calculations for admission in fall A grade point average higher than the 2.5 minimum is recommended as admission is competitive. B. Rank-Ordered Selection (Regular Category Selection Process) The JBN Admissions Committee reviews each admission competition independently. Points are awarded to the following: AGPA, and number of university level courses completed as a UCN student. The applicant s placement on the rank-order selection list is determined by calculating a total score from the following academic results: Table 3: AGPA Point Score for Admission AGPA Scale Awarded Points Score Table 4: UCN Student Preference (Completed credit hours as a UCN student) Point Score for Admission UCN Student (Credits) Awarded Points TOTAL: /60 POINTS Score C. Supplementary Application Selection Process Applicants who have attended but have not completed a nursing diploma or degree program, the completion of which would result in the graduate s eligibility to write the NCLEX-RN (or equivalent) in order to qualify for registration to practice as a Registered Nurse, must meet admission requirements as identified above, including the competitive adjusted GPA in the year of application. In addition, applicants must provide supplementary information about the program in which they were previously registered, including the name of the Dean, 8 P a g e

9 Director, Head, or Coordinator of the Nursing Program who will then be contacted by the Nursing Department. For further information please contact the Nursing Academic Advisor. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to deny admission to the JBN program based on any of the supplemental information. Applicants who would be eligible to register in third or fourth year courses will be considered for admission only if space is available. D. Tie Breaking Procedures for Offers In the event of a tie, the following procedure will be used: The AGPA will then be used to break the tie. E. Notification of Decision Once a decision has been made, successful applicants will receive a letter of acceptance from UCN Enrolment Services. Students that are offered admission must complete and return the Admissions Confirmation form prior to the registration period to hold their seat in the program. Registration Period: July 3-August 17, 2019 Section 6: Counselling of Applicants The Nursing department and Enrolment Services are able to assist applicants who seek counselling regarding admission to the BN program. However, it is policy not to instruct applicants as to a specific course of action they should follow, but rather to provide the information needed for applicants to make their own choice with respect to the alternatives available. The following points should be considered: 1. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their plans with individuals who can advise them accurately. 2. No official at the University College of the North can guarantee the admission of any applicant. Admission is granted by the Committee after an independent case-by-case review. 3. All applicants are advised to supplement any personal enquires with a written request. Section 7: Contact Information h/programofferings/jbn/pages/faculty-and- Staff.aspx Section 5: Reconsideration & Appeals Individuals who wish to have their application reconsidered should submit their request to the Chair of the Selection Committee. Persons wishing reconsideration of the decision of the Selection Committee shall direct their request to the Chair in writing within (10) days from the date on the letter of decision. Completion of the program entitles students to work as graduate nurses, and to write the NCLEX to obtain the designation, Registered Nurse (RN). Application and registration information can be obtained from the CRNM website at and others may find the requisite skills and abilities informative. Please see the below link for the complete document: ment_file_201.pdf?t= B. Bachelor of Nursing Program University College of the North in partnership with University of Manitoba (JBN) offers Nursing Education in The Pas and Thompson MB. C. Requisite Skills and Abilities Certain basic skills and abilities are required for a student to attain the Entry-Level Competencies for Registered Nurses in Manitoba. The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (the College), in partnership with all nursing education programs in Manitoba, identified these requirements. They are called the requisite skills and abilities for registered nurses in Manitoba and are set out in this document.
