1 Course Description MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY NUR 409 -Syllabus Fall 2002 This four credit Level III (senior year) theory course is offered fall and spring semesters, concurrently with NUR 410 (Practicum in Community Health Nursing) and NUR 412 (Practicum in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing). This course is built on a social system framework and explores the theoretical perspectives on behavior as applied to mental health nursing practice. Building on previously acquired knowledge, students study concepts related to communication strategies in the nurse-client relationship. Maladaptive patterns of emotional and behavioral expression are studied in the context of a mental health continuum. Specific patterns included are: anxiety, withdrawal, affective, cognitive, and addictive disorders. Students are encouraged to explore selected research studies relevant to the nursing process as it is used to assist individuals, families, and groups in meeting their mental health needs. Resources within the community mental health system are identified. In addition, the course is designed to orient the student to the broad area of community health. It provides the students with a frame of reference for practice in the field of Public Health. The philosophy, development, organization, and structure of the field of Public Health are explored. An introduction to vital statistics, epidemiology, and environmental health is included, and current trends and issues in local, national, and international community health are explored. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand the health care delivery system in the public and private sector and the implications for practice in public health and mental health. 2. Apply theoretical perspectives on behavior, as well as use of scientific inquiry models and epidemiology as a basis to discover community and mental health practice issues. 3. Synthesize knowledge of theoretical perspectives on behavior and examine relevant research as these are used in nursing practice for clients with psychiatricmental health problems. 4. Discuss the research process and knowledge generated from research to prevent disease and maintain or promote health in the community. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of the continuum of emotional and behavioral expression in clients, families, and groups. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of nursing roles as they interface with client systems (individuals, families, and groups).

2 7. Synthesize knowledge of the historical role of nursing in psychiatric and community settings as it relates to present and future roles. 8. Describe the process of assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation that is appropriate to characteristics of aggregates. 9. Examine major legal, social, cultural, political, and economic issues which influence the health care system and the client. 10. Explore the uniqueness of and diversity between various population groups as recipients of health care. For weeks 9-14, topics of interest to both community health and psych/mental health will be addressed in the full four (4) hours available. Required media, required reading assignments, self-study modules, and recommended reading are included with the objectives for each class. A course class schedule reflecting class topics, exams and due dates for course requirements is included in the NUR 409 syllabus. Students are encouraged to bring their copies of the NUR 409 syllabus to each class to facilitate discussion and note taking. Classes are presented on the assumption that the student has completed all assigned readings, self-study modules, and media prior to the class for which they are assigned. Note taking related to the information is encouraged. Assessment of required media/reading may precede the associated class topic. Exams will be based on class content, assigned reading, self-study modules, media and other course assignments. All exams and selected in-class activities will utilize BLACKBOARD.

3 Special Needs Any student who has special needs should contact the course chairpersons prior to or during the first week of class to discuss his/her needs. Methods of Evaluation This course uses points instead of percentages. Points are assigned to exams and other class requirements. A maximum of 500 points is possible in NUR 409. Points are summed and converted to the University numerical grading scale, using the following conversion categories to the University numerical ( ) grading scale: Grade on 500-point Scale Grade on University Grading Scale (94-100%) (89-93%) (84-88 %) (79-83%) (75-78%) 2.0 Passing (70-74%) (65-69%) 1.0 Less than 324 (> 64%) 0.0 NOTE: Students must obtain a course grade of > 2.0 in order to pass the course. A 0.0 grade will be given for dishonest behavior. Course Requirements A variety of activities are required and evaluated in this course. They include examinations, in-class activities and out of class preparatory class activities. Information about the examinations and other activities are described below and in appropriate areas of the NUR 409 Course Pack. Examinations (400 Possible Points) There are five (5) exams scheduled in this course that collectively total a maximum of 400 points or 80% of the 500 course points. Four (4) fifty minute exams (30-35 questions each) will be given at approximately three week intervals during the semester. Each exam is identified on the course calendar and is worth 65 points. The fifth exam, a 100 minute exam (70-75 questions), will be given during final exam week and will include 20% of items (28 points) from weeks and 80% items (112 points) cumulative; exam 5 is worth 140 points. NUR 409 exams reflect NCLEX style questions, i.e., multiple choice questions that reflect the components of the nursing process. The exams initially address less

4 complicated questions, but gradually focus on more complicated questions, i.e., analytical, by semester s end. In addition the NCLEX-RN review text has been selected for student use. Students are encouraged to review sections of this text that correspond to class material. Test items from the text may be used on the in-class exams. Other activities (Possible 100 Points) 100 points (20% of the possible 500 points) are distributed among psych/mental health nursing, community health nursing, and the combined psych/mental health community health nursing course material/classes. Selected activities in psychiatric/mental health nursing are worth a maximum of 30 points. These activities include completion of three psychopharmacology modules and their accompanying exams; each unit/exam is worth 10 points. Selected activities in community health nursing are also worth a maximum of 30 points. These activities include satisfactory completion of four(4) CD-ROM exercises (10 points), and evidence of viewing three (3) films, i.e., The 15 Minute Family Interview, Community Assessment, and & the Band Played On as well as submission of associated assignments (20 points). DO NOT complete all the CD-ROM assignments at one time. The CD-ROM is available in the College of Nursing Media Lab. Required activities related to the combined (psych/mental health & community health nursing) classes are worth 40 points. These activities include the satisfactory completion of activities related to the classes and/or viewing of selected videos, and include: Homelessness/Poverty: In-Class Group Activity & T/F Quiz (10 points) Violence & Aggression: Video: Living in a Violent Relationship and T/F Quiz e (10 points) Children & Adolescents: Video: Teen-Age Suicide and in class activity (10 points) HIV/AIDS: Video: HIV Update Mental Health & HIV and a Quiz (10 points) The detailed description of psychiatric/mental health, community health and the combined classes activities are included in the NUR 409 Course Pack. A list of students enrolled in NUR 409 will be provided to the Media Lab personnel. Each time a CD-ROM requirement or any other required film or media assignment for NUR 409 (psych/mental health or the combined classes) is completed the student must notify the lab attendant and make sure it has been noted by the attendant on the master sheet. Faculty will regularly note student completion of these assignments and the associated dates.

(6 th ed.). Philadelphia: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins. Attendance Policy Attendance at all classes is strongly encouraged. Taping Policy Students who wish to audiotape or videotape any class sessions should consult with the relevant course chairperson(s) in advance to obtain permission for taping procedures. Course Policies for Taking Exams The student is required to notify the course chairpersons (Dr. Saint Arnault, psychiatric nursing; and Dr. Wood, community health nursing) if he/she is unable to take an exam. If neither course chairperson is available, the student should leave a voice mail message for both faculty and notify the Office of Student Affairs (Phone: ). A student who is unable to take an exam at the scheduled time will be given an alternate exam/quiz. A grade of 0.0 will be given for students who are absent from scheduled exams or other required activities without prior notification of the course chairpersons. Exams will be collected/submitted promptly at the conclusion of the assigned time. A student who does not turn in his/her test materials when requested to do so will receive a grade of 0.0 for the exam. Posting of Grades Exam results will not be posted. The student will be able to monitor his/her progress on exams and other activities via BLACKBOARD. The process for accessing information about exam performance and status in the course will be reviewed.

6 Student Progress Any student who has a concern about his/her grade is responsible for approaching the course chairperson(s) to discuss the concern. Students who believe they are experiencing academic difficulty should request faculty guidance. Students who have less than a 2.0 at mid semester will be identified and both the student and the Office of Student Affairs will be notified. Refer to the College of Nursing Undergraduate Student Handbook for specific policies regarding monitoring of student progress and resources for academic assistance. Policies for Student Course Representatives Two student representatives will be elected by students enrolled in NUR 409. The student representatives will serve as a channel of communication between the students and faculty by sharing with faculty aggregate student viewpoints and by sharing with students the outcomes of discussions between course faculty and student representatives. Content for discussion with the course chairpersons are to include positive aspects about the course as well as specific items that represent concerns. Student representatives and course faculty will meet twice during the semester as determined by faculty and students. Student representatives are requested to gather input for discussion from fellow students in advance of each meeting. Students may provide course representatives with input either informally (verbally) or formally (in writing). Student course representatives should direct any students who might have individual level concerns to contact the course chairperson(s) to arrange a one-to-one meeting. Examples of individual level issues include questions about individual exam performance, strategies for studying or academic workload management, and requests for accommodations for course examinations or other assignments. A maximum of five minutes of class time will be available for the sharing of information by student representatives. The course chairpersons reserve responsibility for final decisions about the course content/format, teaching styles, and evaluation of student academic performance.
