2 Getting into the Institution On behalf of the Team Ask for a visit or tour before a planned project Know where to park and enter the facility Ask if locker available and if there is a charge Discuss type of inmates you will contact As an Individual Leave home in proper dress with proper attitude Check for contraband search yourself Leave phone in locked car Bring your picture ID and car keys Know the location of and proper entrance procedures Proper security attitude be patient with process Appearance Dress Code Conservative Professional Field work setting i inn an industrial plant Jewelry Minimal (watch, ring) Safety Proper shoes Nothing dangling; don t t wear neckties 2

3 Contraband Defined Anything not allowed in the facility Legal a ass well as illegal Some everyday items otherwise fine on the outside Examples Cell phones/pagers are hot items Cigarettes, lighters, prescription drugs or alcohol Weapons, knives, tools, scissors, needles Food, drinks, snacks, gum On the Inside.the basics Professional Courtesy Be professional without becoming personally involved or compromised Follow the planned program activity Report unusual incidents to staff or if you recognize someone Not your regular office understand use of phone, restroom, common things 3

4 Games Inmates Play Never Accept or Give Favors or Gifts Inmates may ask for and expect even bigger gifts or favors in return (legal and illegal) Staff, Volunteers or Visitors who can be conned are viewed as weak and untrustworthy easy marks Even the smallest acts can lead to trouble: taking a gift or card to a sick child or making a call or three-way call Just say no!.that will be respected In Other Words What we may otherwise believe is a simple act of kindness may be a violation of rules and an invitation for inmates to take advantage of you Rules of the institution override any practices that might otherwise be acceptable out in the community 4

5 Staying as Far From Trouble As Possible Don t t give or offer to give ANYTHING to an inmate that isn t t part of the formal activity Don t t carry anything in or out of the facility for an inmate even something a seemingly innocent as a note or letter Don t t make any calls on behalf of an inmate while in or after departing the facility Be courteous and respectful but not friendly or as a friend Did we mention Just say No!???? Emergencies and Risks Biggest risks are not from inmate contact but from being in an industrial plant Slips and falls; bending and lifting injuries Moving through elevator or heavy security doors Bumped by staff responding to an incident Not following medical safety practices no shortcuts or need to rush; hand washing; handling sharps Sounding the Alarm Report any unusual activity or anything you are uncomfortable with to facility staff Incidents occur from time to time Get a briefing from facility staff on what to do just in case there is an incident or disturbance 5

6 Going Home Pack up or secure all program items Take all of your personal belongings Leave everything else Don t t discuss information about facility security or specific inmates once outside Celebrate a good experience Incentives and Enablers Program devices that help patients stay with and complete treatment Incentives are small rewards given to patients to encourage compliance to medical treatment; follow up appointments Enablers are those things that make it possible or easier for the patients to receive treatment by overcoming barriers such as transportation Not typically used in correctional settings but can be a program used in the community Neither are a substitute for a high quality relationship with patients 6
