1 NIHFW Newsletter Quarterly Newsletter of the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Vol. XIV, No. 4, October-December, Participation of the Institute in the 6th Common Review Mission (CRM) under NRHM The 6th CRM was conducted in 15 states namely, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, during November 3-9,. The following faculty members, Chief Medical Officer and RCH consultants of the Institute visited the States: Prof. A.M. Khan- Tripura Prof. T. Nair- Kerala Dr. Rajesh Kumar- Manipur Dr. Ankur Yadav- Chhattisgarh Dr. Gyan Singh- Rajasthan Dr. Balbir Singh Diwan- Uttar Pradesh Dr. Umesh Chandra Sahu - Odisha The dissemination workshop of the 6th Common Review Mission of the National Rural Health Mission was held on January 4, 2013, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. In his address, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Hon ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Chairman of the Governing Body of the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, highlighted the far reaching changes that have taken place in the health scenario of the country since the launch of the National Rural health Mission more than seven years ago. Further, while talking about the achievements of NRHM, the Union Minister focussed on health infrastructure and human resources development which took place in all the States and Union Territories of the country. The amount of money invested on these issues works out to be Rs. 90,000 crores, the Minister informed the august gathering. The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad releasing the 6th Common Review Mission Report, in New Delhi on January 04, 2013.
2 National Rural Health Mission/Reproductive and Child Health-II National Institute of Health and Family Welfare continued to coordinate the training and monitoring activities of NRHM in various parts of the country in collaboration with 18 Collaborating Training Institutions. Monitoring Visits: During this quarter, the consultants visited twenty three districts in nine States/UTs as part of monitoring activities of NRHM. Integrated Monitoring Visits: As consultants from NIHFW have also been included as members of the Integrated Field Monitoring Teams of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, they visited two districts of Rajasthan. The RCH-II Unit organized a two-day National Workshop for Strengthening of SIHFWs and CTIs during October 16-17,, in collaboration with European Union funded Institutional and Technical Support Project, at NIHFW. National Child Health Resource Centre (NCHRC) Monitoring and Assessment of Facility-Based Newborn Care (FBNC) in Co-ordination with Child Health Division of MOHFW: NCHRC is supporting MOHFW in regular data collection and quarterly review of Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) operational in the country for evaluating the services utilization and quality of care being provided by these units. In this regard, technical reports for the five quarters (January-March 2011, April-June 2011, July-September 2011, October-December 2011 and January- March ) have been prepared and shared with the MOHFW and the States. Repository on Maternal and Child Health: The digital Repository ( has completed two years of its operationalization in June. During these two years, there has been a steady increase in the number of visitors altogether 68,016 visitors accessed the website from 181 countries across the world. 77 per cent of the traffic came from India alone where the site was visited by people from 23 States. The average time spent on the website is four minutes per visit with a good bounce rate of 18 per cent. NBSU and NBCC Assessment: NBSU and NBCC assessment tools were developed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in consultation with different stakeholders. NCHRC has supported in preparation of the assessment tools. Software to Collect and Analyze Field Data on Home Based Post-Natal Care (HBPNC) Programme of Mothers and Newborns: Apart from piloting the software in , NCHRC has given technical support in the development of the software. The software is now ready for installation on the NIHFW server. Guest Lectures Dr. Saraswati Raju, Professor, Centre for the Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, delivered a lecture on Child Sex Ratio in India and Its Implementation for Programme Mangers on October 5,. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Team Leader-Communication, Path - A Catalyst for Global Health, New Delhi, delivered a lecture on The Challenge and Promise of Innovation in Strategic Health Communication on December 7,. Prof. Chee Ng, Associate Director, Asialink and Ms. Julia Fraser, Co- Director, Asia Australia Mental Health, delivered a lecture on Current Global Trends in Mental Health on December 13,. 2 NIHFW Newsletter

Besides, delegations from Myanmar and Bhutan visited the Institute during this quarter. Events Vigilance Awareness Week The Vigilance Awareness Week was observed in the Institute during October 31-November 6,. During this week, Director and staff members of the Institute took a pledge to root out corruption in any form in the institute and bring transparency in their official functioning to strengthen the nation s democratic set-up. Communal Harmony Week With the objective of serving the victims of communal riots and to denounce communalism; NIHFW observed the Communal Harmony Campaign including the Flag Day during November 19-25, An amount of Rs. 5200/- (Five Thousand and Two Hundred Only) was collected during the Flag Day on November 23, and the same has been deposited to The Secretary, National Foundation for Communal Harmony, Lok Nayak Bhawan, New Delhi World AIDS Day The World AIDS Day was celebrated in the Institute on December 3,. The event was organized by the Ist year and IInd year post-graduate students MD (CHA) under the guidance of, Dean of Studies, NIHFW., Head, Department of Community Health Administration, chaired the occasion. In her opening remarks, Prof. Bhattacharya shared some of her valuable experiences and information with the audience on HIV/AIDS. Also,, Dean of Studies, in his speech highlighted the current scenario of the disease in the globe in general and India in particular. On this occasion, a quiz competition on HIV/AIDS was also conducted by the students. The winners of the quiz and the Ist year and the IInd year PG students were given away the prizes. 8 Capacity Building of IEC Officers in Social and Behaviour Change Communication The Institute in collaboration with Improving Healthy Behaviours Programme (IHBP), supported by USAID, has proposed to share a common agenda and bring complimentary resources for addressing behaviour change communication capacity building and training activities at national and state levels. Activities of NIHFW and IHBP will focus on strengthening capacity in the area of behaviour change communication skills; including facilitation techniques and opportunities and sharing information and resources. In this regard, the Institute has already completed two courses on Capacity Building of Frontline Health Functionaries of Delhi State in Communication Skills and has decided to roll out the course to train the IEC/BCC officers who are working at national, state and district levels. The first course in the series will be held in Chennai covering the IEC/BCC officers of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka. The subsequent course will be held in Jaipur for the IEC/BCC officers of Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The third and fourth courses will be held in Bhubaneswar and Panchkula, respectively. The course planned for Bhubaneswar will be represented by the IEC/BCC officers of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, while the course planned for Panchkula will be represented by the IEC/BCC officers of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On completion of these courses, the participants will be able to: (i) list out the NRHM priorities at the community level and their communication challenges under National Rural Health Mission; (ii) describe characteristics of SBCC and its steps in planning; (iii) prepare creative briefs for communication programme; (iv) implement the communication programme; (v) monitor and evaluate the communication programme; and (vi) develop communication action plan.
