5 Best Practices Most institutions do not have a formal program to recognize clinical faculty A few (Harvard, Mount Sinai) have separate titles for clinicians One (Icahn SOM) developed a formal set of promotion criteria that is similar to our needs

6 Guidelines: Distinctions and Basis for Conferral Physician (entry level title for all clinicians) Senior Physician Distinction Distinguished Physician Master Clinician (10% or less of DOM) Quality of Care and Patient Satisfaction (primary criterion for advancement) Innovation Administration Citizenship Basis for conferral

7 Levels of Distinction Senior physician excellent clinical care, current on new techniques, participation in administration and citizenship Distinguished physician outstanding clinical care and reputation, current on new techniques, expanded participation in administration and citizenship Master clinician exemplary clinical reputation, leadership in practice optimization, often significant administrative leadership, leadership in teaching and service at Emory and beyond

8 Metric Senior Physician Distinguished Physician Master Clinician Quality of Care and Patient Satisfaction Evidence of excellence in the provision of clinical services and the delivery of expert, compassionate care is required. Evidence of the provision of outstanding clinical care and acknowledgement of clinical reputation is required. Reputation among Emory Medicine is required. Regional reputation is optional. Candidates will be widely regarded as exemplary master clinicians and acknowledged and sought after as clinical experts in respective specialties at regional and national levels. Innovation Candidates should be current on new techniques and methods of thinking and incorporate them into their practice of medicine as appropriate. Candidates are expected to integrate new approaches in the field into clinical practice. Candidates will demonstrate leadership in practice optimization, incorporating the latest standards and procedures into the provision of exemplary clinical services. Administration Candidates may be recognized for their administrative contributions to the delivery of care and demonstrate a positive impact on their clinical practice Candidates may be recognized for their administrative contributions to care delivery and for developing innovative changes at the section level that have a positive impact. Candidates may be evaluated on the basis of their significant administrative contributions at the highest levels of the organization, including developing and implementing innovative changes for multiple sites that have a positive impact on quality of care, scope of services, etc. Citizenship Candidates are expected to maintain required certifications and participate in annual performance reviews grand rounds, committees. Contributions to teaching and mentoring will be recognized. Candidates are expected to expand their participation/leadership in mission critical areas of the DOM and WHSC activities, participate and lead committees in professional organizations. High quality teaching and mentoring will be recognized. Candidates are expected to lead mission critical areas in the organization and to play significant roles on committees in DOM, SOM and WHSC and hold leadership in professional societies. Maintenance of successful record of educating and mentoring young colleagues and trainees will be recognized.

9 Examples of Supporting Metrics Quality of Care and Patient Satisfaction o Patient satisfaction scores o Site-specific performance measures o Regional reputation for clinical care o Clinical expertise is nationally recognized Innovation o Incorporate new techniques or programs o Develop new models of care o Demonstrated leadership in practice optimization Administration (as it relates to delivery of care) o Positive impact on practice e.g. financial viability, program expansion o Development of broad based section level improvements to accessibility, quality of care, etc. o Multi-site success in developing and implementing improvements in any of the above areas Citizenship o Maintain certifications o Complete performance reviews o Participation and leadership in DOM and/or WHSC activities o Educational presentations at regional and national levels

10 Additional details Minimum 4 years in rank prior to eligibility for next level of distinction Distinctions proposed by Division Director and Service Chief in collaboration with the candidate Reviewed by Department of Medicine Committee on Clinical Distinctions (CCD) each spring New titles will take effect September 1 of each year

11 Who is included in this initiative? Department of Medicine regular (non-volunteer) faculty with clinical responsibilities Physicians employed by Emory Specialty Associates associated with DOM Program currently voluntary; but physicians strongly encouraged to participate

12 When will the program be introduced? Phased rollout by division Beginning October 2016; completed by March 2017 Kick-off event honoring initial conferrals in spring 2017

13 Process for current faculty SOM template CV (required) Clinical Service Statement your opportunity to address the four competencies as applicable (optional, but strongly encouraged) Review of faculty with Division Director and Service Chiefs (rolling basis to be completed March 2017) Approval of appointments by Committee for Clinical Distinctions (CCD)

14 Documentation for future advancement 1. CV (SOM format) 2. Clinical Service Statement to address the four categories of achievement as applicable 3. Division director letter proposing the distinction and providing supporting metrics 4. Service Chief letter supporting the promotion 5. Letters of support (requested by department) a. Senior: 3 internal or external letters b. Distinguished: 1 external letter, 2 internal letters c. Master: 2 external letters, 2 internal letters
