1 REVIEW OF VCE HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT TO THE STUDY DESIGN GENERAL CHANGES The review process for VCE Health and Human Development focused on: reorganisation of Units 1 and 2 reduction of workload in Unit 3 updating of wording to improve the clarity of key knowledge and to ensure currency with new developments in the health sector. SPECIFIC CHANGES has been rearranged from three Areas of Study into two; however, this does not cause a reduction in content. It allows for the introductory definitions and concepts to be linked to relevant key knowledge, rather than being studied in isolation. The key knowledge of the former Area of Study 2 has now been split between the remaining areas of study. : The health and development of Australia s youth i. Area of Study 1: Understanding youth health and human development ii. Area of Study 2: Youth issues The following changes have been made to : Prenatal health and development has been included as an area of study on its own. Previously this was studied as part of Child Health and Development. The focus on health issues has been integrated into the relevant stages of the lifespan. : Individual human development and health issues i. Area of Study 1: Prenatal health and development ii. Area of Study 2: Child health and development iii. Area of Study 3: Adult health and development Unit 3 The content of Unit 3 has been reduced to make the workload more manageable. Reductions in content include limiting the number of nutrients to be studied and the removal from the key knowledge of the nutrient reference values and legislation developed by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand. A minor wording change has been made to to reflect the change to key knowledge. VCAA July
2 Unit 3: Australia s health i. Area of Study 1: Understanding Australia s health ii. Area of Study 2: Promoting health in Australia Unit 4 There has been a minor reorganisation of Unit 4 key knowledge points to ensure a better flow of concepts. The outcome statements have been altered in response to some key knowledge being moved from Area of Study 1 to Area of Study 2. Unit 4: Global health and human development i. Area of Study 1: Introducing global health and human development ii. Area of Study 2: Promoting global health and development Assessment Units 1 and 2 Outcome statements No change has been made to assessment tasks in Units 1 and 2. Outcome statements in all areas of study across Units 1 and 2 have been altered to reflect the focus of the unit. Describe the dimensions of, and the interrelationships within and between, health and individual human development. Describe and explain the factors that impact on the Australia s youth. Outline health issues relevant to Australia s youth and, in relation to a specific health issue, analyse strategies or programs that have an impact on youth health and development. Describe and explain the factors that affect the health children. Describe and explain the factors that affect the health adults. Analyse a selected health issue facing Australia s health system, and evaluate community and/or government actions that may address the issue. Outcome Describe the dimensions of, and the interrelationships within and between, youth health and individual human development and, analyse the health status of Australia s youth using appropriate measurement tools. Describe and explain the factors that impact on the Australia s youth, outline health issues relevant to Australia s youth and, in relation to a specific health issue, analyse strategies or programs that have an impact on youth health and development. Outcome Describe and explain factors that affect the health and individual human development during the prenatal stage of development. Describe and explain factors that affect the health children. Describe and explain the factors that affect the Australia s adults. VCAA July
3 Unit 3 Outcome A minor wording change has been made to to reflect the change to key knowledge. No change has been made to the type or weighting of assessment tasks in Unit 3. Outcome Compare the health status of Australia s population with other developed countries, explain variations in health status of population groups in Australia and discuss the role of the National Health Priority Areas in improving Australia s health status.
