Sowell Archival Technical Services TENNESSEE STATE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES Updated: Tuesday, June 25, 2002 Microfilmed

2 INTRODUCTION Record Group 235 contain the annual reports of health facilities (hospitals), as conducted by the Tennessee Department of Health and Environment for the year These records were delivered by the Health Department to the Tennessee State Library and Archives on April 2, 1996 for processing and microfilming. These records totaled 2.5 cubic feet of shelf space. This record group has been microfilmed and the original records have been disposed of by a state-approved method, in accordance with Records Disposition Authorization #1530.

3 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The State Board of Health was created by the State Legislature in 1877, charged with the responsibility of combating health related epidemics, forming county boards of health, working on school sanitation and maintaining vital records of births and deaths in the State. In 1923 legislation was passed to create a Department of Public Health headed by a commissioner in the Executive Branch of State Government. The activities and responsibilities of the department have changed as health needs and medical care evolved. In 1983 the department was changed from Public Health to the Department of Health and Environment to more clearly reflect the broadening duties of the department to public health and care for the environment. The department is responsible for assuring quality in health care and providers. The department helps administer State laws which require professionals who give health care to meet certain standards. Health care professionals (i.e. doctors, nurses, dentists, etc.) are licensed by boards attached to the Health Department. Disciplinary action is taken if State standards are violated. Hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory surgical treatment centers and other kinds of health care facilities are also licensed by the Health Department. In addition, facilities are assessed and certified for participation in the Federal Medicare and Medicaid programs. The records contained in this record group relate to the assessment of health care facilities as conducted by the Health Department for the year Due to an increased focus on environmental protection and conservation, environmental programs were transferred in 1991 to the new Department of Environment and Conservation. This department s name was then changed to the Department of Health. These records are sorted by regions of the state, starting with upper East Tennessee and ending with lower West Tennessee, and records are sorted by a reference number. To obtain further information on annual reports of health facilities from the Department of Health and Environment, consult Record Groups 143, 176, 178, 179, 232, 233 and 234 at the State Library and Archives.
