Describe the functions of organs and body systems and their relationships to one another within the system and throughout the human body. Reasoning: Explain how the body maintains homeostasis. Explain how a disease condition affects the entire organism. Skills Measure vital signs Accurately record patient/client history. Product: BENCHMARKS Perform related to the body systems. KEY TERMINOLOGY All terminology related to body systems. Unit Number: 2 ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What do I need to be a successful allied health worker? How do allied health workers use their in the clinical setting? CONCEPTS /CONTENT (Outcomes) LEARNING TARGETS/SKILLS (Performance Tasks) BENCHMARKS KEY TERMIN- OLOGY SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES/ RESOURCES SUGGESTED ASSESSMENTS 4
5 34.0 Perform representative of 1-3 major allied health areas in the school laboratory before beginning the clinical phase 35.0 Successfully complete a clinical rotation in at least three major allied health areas Knowledge: Describe the duties, and personal qualities needed for at least three allied health careers. Use appropriate medical terminology for the selected allied health careers. Reasoning: Triage patient needs in a clinical setting. Determine the appropriate care for each patient. Skills Demonstrate in the classroom and clinical settings (as appropriate) the needed for three allied health careers. Demonstrate appropriate professional behavior, appearance and attitude in both classroom and clinical settings. Product: Professional patient presentation to class Perform related to the body systems. Choose three from the following: unlicensed clinical laboratory type unlicensed physical restorative type unlicensed occupational restorative type unlicensed respiratory restorative type medical administrative assisting type unlicensed radiologic type unlicensed phlebotomy aide type unlicensed geriatric type Electrocardiograph technician Terminology will vary depending on chosen clinical rotations. Activities: Clinical Rotations are required for this course. Students must spend a minimum of 15 hours outside the classroom in a medical/clinical setting (this includes, but is not limited to: hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, medical/dental/veterinary offices, mental health facilities, pharmacies, medical non-profits, etc.). These clinical rotations may be completed during the school day. In order to meet minimum clinical time requirements, a two period block is preferred for this course. These blocked periods may be placed at the beginning or end of the school day or the periods surrounding lunch. During clinical rotations students must be supervised at all times by the clinical instructor who is a licensed professional at the clinical site. Rotations in three different clinical areas are required for this course. Classroom instructor must visit the clinical rotation sites at least once during each rotation while students are present at the facility. HOSA participation is encouraged. Resources: Use Allied Health Assisting Career Shadowing Packet forms: Evaluation form to be completed by clinical instructor. Use Allied Health Assisting Report Card. Classroom assessments may be performance-based, selective response and/or extended response. Portfolio with culmination of Allied Health Program work. (digital preferred) 5
