5 Goals of this talk. 1. What is hospital medicine and who practices it? 2. Why I believe hospital medicine is the future of acute care medicine? 3. State of hospital medicine abroad and in Canada 4. Why we need a made in Canada solution? 5. What have we done so far? 6. What are we doing currently? 7. What are we hoping for in the future? 8. What can you do?

6 Hospital Medicine A Hospitalist is a health care practitioner whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Their activities include patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to hospital medicine. Many patients are referred to hospitalists from family physicians for treatment during the duration of their hospitalization then returned to the care of their family physician after discharge. Hospitalists may also consult on and treat patients referred by surgeons and medical sub specialists during their hospitalizations. Hospitalists also care for the unassigned patient who has no primary doctor. Those who practice inpatient medicine in a wholistic way Different from a community practice.

7 Helping define the role... wholistic way what does that mean? Development of Core documents recently has helped define the scope of practice. Who à... NP's, MD's who see the big picture and are all encompassing in their approach.

8 Future of acute care medicine Importance of the generalist. Seeing the big picture. The role subspecialists do not want to or are able to fill de-compartmentalizing

13 As an organization.what have we accomplished? History 10+ years of organization. Built relationships across the country. Assisted with negotiations in multiple areas Yearly conferences to assist in development Built International relations Developed the Core competencies document. Assisted in the development of regional R3 programs Research

14 Current Projects: Phase 2 of the core competencies development Brand development Website redevelopment Strengthening of the organization Building further relations with other organizations

15 Future? Certification CCFP - CAC / FRCP Defining ourselves to lead the nation in health care Assisting / Guiding negotiations Continue to grow and develop our organization.
