2 Who are We Your name Your position Name of School/Location BUL Organizing for Crisis Intervention The bulletin addresses the following concerns: How to respond appropriately to incidents that could precipitate a crisis How to re-establish the safety and security of the school site How to provide appropriate psychological intervention services What is a School Crisis? A sudden, unexpected, or unanticipated critical incident that disrupts the school day May interfere with teaching, learning, attendance, and/or behavior Students, parents/guardians, staff, or other community members may experience crisis differently Can affect a single school site or an entire district 2

3 A Crisis Situation might be An accident on or near the school grounds A violent incident at or near school A suicide of a student, family member, or staff Threatening behaviors towards others The death of a student, family member, or staff A natural disaster An act of terrorism Multi-Tiered Crisis Response Team Model Tier I: School Site Crisis Response Tier II: ESC Crisis Response Tier III: Central Office Crisis Response PREPAREDNESS CRISIS RESPONSE RECOVERY RESPONSE 3

8 Case Vignette Upon return to work Monday morning, you learn that Anthony, a fourth grade student at another school, and his family, were in a car accident that occurred over the weekend. Anthony was driving with his aunt and two older siblings Friday night, when another vehicle ran a red light and crashed into their car. As a member of the ESC Crisis Team, you have been selected to support this school. Here is what you know. Anthony died in the car accident Anthony s two older siblings survived the accident and one is critical condition Anthony s aunt had minor injuries and was released from the hospital Anthony s mother notified the school Principal of the accident Evaluations THANK YOU!
