1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician Department: Conservation Reports to: Wildlife Care Center Manager Supervises: Volunteers Classification: Non-exempt, Full-time Salary range: $18-20/hour, commensurate with experience About Audubon Society of Portland Audubon Society of Portland has been a leading voice in conservation for over a century. Through conservation advocacy, environmental education, and wildlife rehabilitation, we promote the understanding, enjoyment, and protection of native birds, other wildlife and their habitats. We are located in a 150-acre wildlife sanctuary in Forest Park, just minutes from downtown Portland. With over 15,000 members and 450 regular volunteers, we are the largest independent chapter of the National Audubon Society in the United States. It is also Oregon's busiest, treating 3,000 wild birds, mammals and herptiles and responding to 10,000 wildlife-related phone calls annually. The Care Center is an integral part of Portland Audubon s efforts to connect people to nature and engage the community in an ambitious conservation agenda. The Care Center is operated by 3-4 year round staff plus seasonal staff, interns and approximately 150 volunteers. Audubon Society of Portland has just completed a five-year strategic plan. A core priority moving forward is to infuse equity, inclusion, and diversity (EID) into all of the goals and work of the organization. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician will play an important role in achieving the organization s EID goals through the delivery of high quality customer service and visitor engagement. Job Summary The Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician has responsibility for assisting the Wildlife Care Center Manager and Veterinarian with aspects of daily operations, including treatment and care of injured and recovering wildlife, care of non-releasable education animals, supervision and training of volunteers, public outreach, record keeping and facility maintenance. A Certified Vet Technician license is strongly preferred however highly skilled and experienced assistants will be considered and are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years of clinical experience, at least one year of experience working in a wildlife rehabilitation facility and/or commensurate clinical experience working with avian and exotic species. Applicants should possess excellent team building, organizational and communication skills. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician must be able to juggle a multitude of tasks with professionalism, flexibility, and a

2 sense of humor. They will be working with volunteers, stakeholders, membership groups, resource agencies and the general public in office and field settings. A passion for wildlife conservation and ability to engage with diverse voices within the movement is an essential element of this job. The job requires weekend and seasonal evening hours, including occasional unscheduled animal rescue calls. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily care and treatment of injured and orphaned wildlife and resident educational animals including exams, treatments, feeding/ cleaning, record keeping and field rescue. Ensure that outstanding care is provided at all times, and that all applicable local, state and federal regulations are met Assist with and perform medical treatments under the direct and indirect supervision of the veterinarian. This includes taking radiographs, performing anesthesia, assisting in surgery, writing complete and accurate medical records, and providing humane euthanasia in accordance with organization policy and state and federal laws Maintain a clean and safe clinic environment and assist the veterinarian in managing medical inventory Provide oversight, training and supervision of volunteers on a daily basis. Ensure that a safe work environment is provided for volunteers at all times Maintain Equity Lens and apply to day-to-day interactions with staff, volunteers, the public, and in programmatic work Provide outstanding public service to callers, visitors and animal donors regarding injured and diseased wildlife, wildlife stewardship, and resolving human-wildlife conflicts on assigned shifts Other duties as assigned Preferred Qualifications: Minimum 2 years of clinical veterinary experience or commensurate alternative experience Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a wildlife rehabilitation facility or other wildlife related facility or commensurate alternative work Basic wildlife rehabilitation skills including handling, nutrition, exams, injections, gavage, baseline diagnostics, wound management and euthanasia Commitment to DEI and substantial cultural competency skills Strong natural history background with a focus on the fauna of the Pacific Northwest Experience working with volunteers in an animal treatment setting Demonstrable experience engaging and working with diverse communities Computer skills, including familiarity with Word and Excel Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: CVT or commensurate experience X-ray certification for Oregon (must be obtained within 3 months of hire) Certified Euthanasia Technician license (must be obtained within 3 months of hire) State of Oregon Wildlife Rehabilitation Permit (must be obtained within 10 months of hire) Working Conditions: Must have a current driver s license and daily access to a vehicle Must be able to work regular evenings and weekends and be on call during assigned days
